@Shallex They probably needed to track the guitar as well in 3D space.
@Shallex My guess is that they needed to put the tracking tape on the fretboard and the strings might get in the way. You have to remember that with mocap, normal everyday things don't translate well in 3D without using trackers.
I love how James frets the chords correctly even without strings lol. And yes Lars, this went straight to TH-cam
it's called muscle memory. he'd been playing those songs for over 20 years by that point, he could probably see the tabs in his sleep.

@@misterscorbunny5524 When I sat down and tried to learn the song, it took me like 10 minutes to get the intro down, when I eventually used my brain I put the click on, I nailed it, I fully understand Lars’s struggle when he was playing.
Yeah, it wouldn't have been much effort to put a count in click track on there.

Alex K Well, he is. It's just muted and with dummy cymbals. The mutes might feel a little different but it shouldn't really affect performance.
Mutes hardly have any rebound, I have some and they feel pretty crap, especially on the snare. I have good brand ones and they still pretty suck

i would imagine that all the screams and cheers by the crew is not only them having the time of their lives seeing a free metallica concert but to also help the band get into the mind space and feeling that they're really playing for thousands of people and the cheers hype them up

Well they're motion capturing their hands, so yes they need to be as real as possible, I think they should have put strings on it haha I'm sure it was hard to mimic feeling the strings with no strings, especially bends and stuff, but for people who have done it their whole lives I'm sure it was just a minor inconvenience haha
Something Something There's a video with kirk playing master of puppets without james and james is singing. But james couldn't remember the lyrics without playing his guitar. It's muscle memory

They need a brand new Guitar Hero Metallica with every album they’ve ever made up to date. You should also get the option to play studio version or concert version. And if you select concert version, it’ll play the concert in the background like in rockband

That would be horribly expensive and leave like no room for profit.
Metallica has well over 100 songs in those 10 albums, 144 if I remember, even if you made only three difficultys, easy, medium, and hard, you still need to do that for, drums, bass, guitar, and vocals. Basically it would end up like Cyberpunk 2077, far too over ambitious for it's own good, glitchy as hell, and over all just doesn't work. Also you would need the Metallica members to record all of that which would be a chore to schedule because they still need to do touring, getting them to do it at all would be a chore on its own

To be an Guitar Hero employee to see a free Metallica show with them reenacting their performance live in person
First off, he has no intro beat to follow, the song just starts up so he had to be lucky just to start on the first beat. Secondly, it's The Shortest Straw, Metallica doesn't play that song very often so I'd understand if he wasn't exactly familiar with every single beat. Thirdly, Metallica plays the song differently live than they did in the studio, that's probably why he fucks up at the end, I don't blame him for that.

Fourthly, Lars Ulrich sucks at drumming and he should be better than this. You know that. I shouldn't have to tell you. He's supposed to be a professional, and he doesn't act like one at all. He doesn't practice nearly enough and it shows. He started playing 35 years ago or something. I don't care if he hates it now or whatever, he has a responsibility to his fans to either attempt to do it properly or not at all.

Had a giant border around the pickup right where I usually would put my hand, so the corner would jab me in the palm. the pickups also sounded like shit plugged in. I think the neck was kind of fat too which went against my preferences. It was just all around uncomfortable to play and I didn't feel like keeping it around if I wasn't gonna play it. Ended up getting an oktober wraith afterward that's pretty nice

First off they should have designed a click track that was at the same tempo as the song not some dude counting off 3, 2.....1, GO! (see what I did there? :P ) It's pretty hard to feel your way through non rhythmic "dead zones" ESPECIALLY at the beginning of the song without a metronome or time keeper. You can tell cuz once he got into the song he nailed it from there. Not to mention this is like one RANDOM ASS song in a giant catalogue of songs. Might have been years since he last played it. Duh. Having said that nice job Lars!

I would consider this a win more than a fail considering they haven't played the song live in like 20 years. So basically he's playing a song he doesn't know and after 3 tries he can play the entire thing. That's pretty impressive.
There aren't sensors in the drums, this is all about motion capture. The pads on the drums are mutes so they're not deafened during shooting. Same as a lot of real music videos.

Also playing the most rhythmic complicated metallica riff without a click to lead into it is seriously difficult. I'm suprised it only took that many takes. There's a reason why live there's always a 4 count at the top of a song.

I was in my very first music video recording the other month, and it was seriously tough work. It's really great to see how these behind-the-scenes show what ACTUALLY goes on.
I think people are giving too much shit for Lars in this case. They're playing an old song as they mentioned, one they probably haven't played in decades (I might be wrong but somebody mentioned).

this video was the reason I learned about Master of Puppets, when I listened to the harmonic part and I loved it
i played GH Metallica *so* much as a kid. Metallica is still my number 1 band, and I still clearly remember the extra movements and gestures Jaymz does to accentuate the vocals
I thought James was singing MOP and not lip synching at first. I was like... dayumm he sounds amazing...LOL Thanks for loading btw. Pretty cool process. The Shortest Straw is possibly the best song ever recorded by Metallica in my opinion. The Justice record is easily my favorite by them followed by MOP and RTL. I wish they would have accented Jason's bass on the record a bit more though. I think it would have made it more dynamic than it already was if they had. After Justice the next good hard, kick your teeth in type of a record by them was Death Magnetic and that is one hell of a dry spell. The Loads or St. Anger just did not appeal to me with the exception of a couple of songs. Devils Dance off of one of the Loads comes to mind as one truly creative song. Please all do remember this is just an opinion which means absolutely zilch.

I see many people complaining and saying things like "poor of him" or "he's one of the worst famous drummer ever" when the things are simple, he couldn't be an amazing drummer, but he has a lot of experience, what has happened here?, PLAYING A SONG LIVE IS FASTER THAN THE ONE RECORDED, THEY HAVE ANOTHER TEMPO, LARS HAVE PLAYED SHORTEST STRAW LIVE FOR MANY MANY YEARS, SO IS OVBIOUS THAT WHEN HE TRIE TO PLAY THE RECORDED ONE IS GOING TO BE CONFUSING AT FIRST, HE JUST WOULD NEED TO MARK THE TIME, HE DID, AND HE CONTINUED PLAYING IT WITHOUT ANY PROBLEM...
actually you should play your songs at the same tempo at all times. in the studio and live. his problem was that he just didn´t count the right measures
klauskarlkraus Not necessarily. Listen to Fade to Black live in 2008, its slowed down more than the recording, and it works. You don't need to replay the exact same tempo, as Kirk has said, the goal of playing live is not to play an exact replica of the recording, if Metallica did that, they would not be half as popular/requested for live shows. Plus, 3, 2, 1 Go is not a good countdown for song that requires the drums on the first beat. How about you give him a click track? For a drummer, they set the tempo, either just by themselves playing the song, or by playing to a metronome. Trying to match the tempo to a recording straight away is extremely hard to do, try it sometime, and you will see.
klauskarlkraus No actually you shouldn't. But you can play it at whatever tempo you want, just no too much faster or slow to the point where it changes the song. For instance, Lars plays the drums the Nothing Else Matters to where it butchers the song.

This is the game that made me a metallica fan, first time playing ONE in GH3 I failed at the solo but really like the song overall and then years later I found out they had a game and I could play their hit songs. Hearing master of puppets, Enter Sandman even Frantic I knew these guys were total badasses.
The guys in the video game actually behave like them originals. It's crystal clear to me but surprises me everytime I come back.
