Victrix- Rome's Italian Allied Legions!

- I enjoyed building the Imperial auxiliaries, and having painted a fair amount of Warlord Republican Legionnaires, it made sense to grab some allies for them when I found a set for a good price.
First off- it's in a box. That's interesting. I haven't seen many Victrix sets in boxes. Most I've got have been in thick plastic bags. Perhaps this was an earlier release.
The casting quality is nice and there's a variety of body and head designs. The poses are a bit static, which can be seen as either a positive or negative depending on what you plan on doing with these figures. I found the Imperial equivalents to be a bit more robust in terms of how varied they could be, but I have a feeling that the Imperials were a later release than these models.
The pilum they carry seem really thick. I couldn't remember the word while I filmed this! Another sign perhaps they are a bit of an older release.
I liked the Velites. I will mix in a few more pieces from other Victrix kits to make them more unique and to vary their poses up some more.
Overall it's not a bad kit. You get a lot of figures which is great if you want to bulk out a Republic- era army, but I prefer the newer sets that offer up a bit more dynamic poses and uniqueness.

A lot of the differences come not from difference in era for the Romans, but difference in era for victrix. The republic stuff is way older, hence why they're still in boxes, and victrix used to make far more Sturdy but uniform and slightly smaller guys. Now a days victrix is very confident in their modeling and make very very active models although they're a bit bigger and the weapons a bit thinner

I figured as much. I think I started really paying attention to Victrix around the time they released their Viking kit, but it was the Dacians that made me finally pull the trigger.

Yeah, I couldn't get into the Napoleonics either. All those guys in bright clown uniforms... I'm not getting the Frostgrave vibes for these Republic allies, so if I do get them, it would be for SPQR, Clash of Spears, Mortal Gods, or Infamy, Infamy. Though, to be honest, if I can get 28mm arms with guns, lasers, there is always the space Roman conversion thing that intrigues me.
I'm looking at the pile of Stargrave arms I've got left and I think I might need to do the same...
On the box, what the flip is a "velite"!? 😂

Romans do pretty well in fantasy and Sci fi. Codex Alera and the Videssos Cycle both lean on the missing legions having been sent to fantasy world. Shame the poses aren’t more fantasy-friendly.
I appreciate the literature suggestions. I've been churning through Culture books so I need something a bit different.
Perhaps the Wargames Atlantic late Romans will lend themselves better to fantasy usage?
Of the two series, Codex Alera is more high fantasy and action packed while Videssos is real(ish) early Romans meet fantasy Byzantium if that helps. For the fantasy armies, any Romans would probably work, so I’d go with the kits that are most fun to assemble and kitbash with Frostgrave. Perhaps use the chain Mail dudes for fantasy and non chain Mail dudes for Sci fi Roman conversions?
What is their size? 28mm? Could they be used as a kind of addition to a GW Empire army??
The Latin allies were identical to Roman troops so far as we can tell (Livy battle of Magnesia) so are taken for granted in the sources. They were in effect second class Roman citizens with limited rights. These made up the allied 'wings'. Non Latin allies would be more varied, in maniples to be sure (Pyrrhus campaign in Italy) but with their own local arms and armour, eg Samnites Etruscans etc. Tarentum and Syracuse as well as Capua supplied allied cavalry and mercenary light troops, Gauls supplied allied too but we're liable to change sides!

Are these as fragile as some of Victrix's other sets? I assembled a command sprue from their late saxon set and the weapons seemed to break if you just looked at them funny.
Weapons are definitely a lot thicker, but the contact points for where the arms meet the bodies is still somewhat small.
I'd feel a lot less worried about these than the Saxons. My only issue with the Saxon weapons was how thin the spears were.
