I did the same thing, using various names of people from school, starting with the ones I liked, then as attrition set in, you start getting to those you don't know or like as much!
Thanks for your boundless enthusiasm and for vividly describing the tension and heroics involved in a B17 QOTS mission! Your narrative B17 episodes were great fun! I try not to use family members as crew as the sudden, almost random, loss of crew is painful enough without adding that extra layer of personal investment. I utilise a variant of the B17 zone map when I play Target for Today and Target for Tonight to add immersion. Great work Chief!
I can understand that. I don’t think I would put my sons on a plane for that reason. Matter of fact I know I wouldn’t. Again I think B-17 could be called an anti-war game. Amazing how it does that.
Great video CHIEF... Let's face it the mechanics was just genius! I just picked up "Defending America"... which was a companion of the Germans attacking America (Compass Games?)... as a fiction writer, it opened up a lot story lines. Years ago, because of you... I managed to get the B-24's and Italian aircraft... expansions. When we talk about some pioneer games, you have to include "Midway" by AH, PANZERBLITZ and Panzer Leader and TOBRUK... very good review!
I pulled B-17 out and looked at it in the late 80's and decided that solo games was weird. That is the dumbest thing I ever did board game wise. 'About ten years later I bought Ambush and was sold. B-17 was sold out by then in my country. Buhuuu. Now I have Target For Today and I feel that I lack the map just as Chief said. Thank you for the video Chief. ^^
I bought the original version in 1981, from On Target Games. Later got the AH version; still have both. Not really sure I completed enough missions to be sent home. At the opposite end of the spectrum, I really like the recent 8th Air Force solitaire game.
Excellent presentation. Energetic. Vivid. Passionate. I also bought B-17 in the '80s. It became a very large part of my life, and while I have not played it in many years, it still has an impact in my life because of a game I am working on which has its roots in B-17. My game is same same but different.
@@BondingWithBoardGamesRPGs Very much so, and without it, would we have the solo games which followed it? Patton's Best, Silent Hunter and so many others.. Interesting topic. "Without Elvis, there would be no Beetles"
Really liked this episode. Picked up B-17 in the 80's as well. Still one my favorites, pull it out today always a great experience. I think my longest surviving bomber was 22 missions. Your reason two is number one for me - no other game captures that feeling of dread in a die roll, going oh c**p on getting walking hits, the relief from superficial damage... I had an uncle who was a waist gunner on a B-17, his fear was flak, because there was nothing you could do about it but take it. That what the B-17 game does so well, you have take what gets thrown at you.
Brilliant. You have captured here what I feel is missing from a lot of reviews - the pull, immersion, passion, challenges, highs and lows of victory and failure. It is important to know that the mechanics are elegant and enhance the game , or fiddly and detract... but how does it feel? Solitaire narrative games like B-17 and the Hunters receive a lot of flak (forgive the pun) for being dry, but you have really shown the experience that is waiting. Perhaps it's what you bring to the game; imagination and interest. Thank you. (edited for typos)
I’ve actually done 14…I think plays on the channel already. Search up Hamtagery…the name of the plane. I plane on coming back to it at some point. The crew has been very lucky and Ron even got an extra boot. Inside Hamtagery joke.
The bomber is world within a world. I was always Max Swagger the pilot. Mission number 23 to sub pins in zone 7, I get fuselage walking hits from a FW190 in zone 4 and was Authorized to turn back from the damage. However being assigned to lead in the middle box with 23 missions under your belt all eyes are looking at you take the rookies there and back. Max never gave it a second thought. Best and worst mission we ever did. Had the crew that could bailout over the airfield. Maj Swagger died a hero in the crash trying to save the wounded ace gunner in the back.
I have it and messed around with the bits. It is the updated version of B-17 Queen. It just had a zone box track. No map of Europe. It overall looked better and had tons of detail. It looks like it adds a lot more details.
I bought this when i came out and never got more than 10 missions or so before having a sudden catastrophic ending (is there any other type of ending)? I may have to pull this off the shelf and give it another go...it has been around 5 years since my last sortie. And yes, i named my crew initially with people i knew and liked but has they were eventually replaced, i had to resort to coming up with names or just randomly picking them out of the phone book... Don't know what i will do now since i think phone books (white pages) have become a relic (ha) Thanks again Chief
I’ve never had a plane survive 25 missions. What was very cool was when I ran a squadron. Suddenly some planes seemed luckier than others. Had to play a lot of games while running an entire squadron. Burned me out.
Yeah, this game is still a fun one... I have to agree. The Target for Today "remake" is pretty nice, and I backed it before it came out, but truth is that the original B-17: Queen of the Skies is still better. Normally, I wouldn't be a big fan of a game that doesn't give you a ton of agency, but this one just evokes such stories, that I am always invested and entertained. :-) A gem in my collection and I plan on never letting it go. 🙂 btw... so sad about that airshow crash of the B-17 just the other week. Horrifying footage of that collision/crash.
You told about a new version of the game. Do you mean "Target for Today/Tonight" (that @KabukiKid already mentioned)? What do you think about this game(s)?
Fantastic review Chief. Luv you’re stuff; esp these retro throwback videos of all time classics. What’s your / HAMTAGs opinion of the classic vs all these great recent creations? Eg Target for Today by Legion. With TfT apparently designed as 21st century of the 1980s classic here ?? There are also DVG B17 Leader and LnL’s A Wing and a Prayer for everyone here to consider. Ive not had time to dive into any of them. BUt... now that Im retired going to start dipping my toes in. With AWAAP. It to perhaps have best balance of Phun play, detail, without a lot of the down in the weeds details that make others IMHO less playable. Whiskey Mike Actual - Out. Best - Neil
TfT is the modern version of B-17 QotS. It has more details and mostly better components. It does not have the travel map but someone made one for it. I’m very glad it’s there. B-17 needs to be easily available and TfT did that. I own it but still like playing my OG
You get attached to your Bombers, I get attached to my Grunts. 1 yr tour is 12 missions / one per month. Nobody ever makes out alive, unless they were horribly mutilated. Billy dont be a hero, dont be a fool with your life. Billy dont be a hero and come back to me alive.

Thank you HD. I think the imagination or capturing it…is what B-17 pulled off so well.
Will we see B-17 played on the channel? Reminds me of the video game Barotrauma but that game is a submarine game.

Yes that was terrible. That king Cobra cut it in half. I’m waiting for the NTSB to investigate and see what happened.
