This is taught in Buddhism in the analogy of the Lotus flower and the Mud: the deeper and thicker the Mud (delusions & sufferings), the more beautiful the Lotus flower (emptiness & wisdom) and Jewel. You cannot have the Lotus flower without the Mud.

Sitting on the river bank , closing my eyes, I find myself all alone, with your voice and the song of the birds, touching the space where all is one, it is an experience of silence, clarity and eternal peace, even sleep, war or destruction, appear as divine expressions of life, returning to the world of forms, I see persons, conflicts, dualities everywhere, existence becomes a question mark, and I am afraid this planet can be destroyed, and all its beauty desappear, deep down I sense, That I am both and both are one, is awareness a boat crossing to the other shore? And love a bridge to come back? Uniting the banks of the river of life?

Actually Buddha`s way is called the Middle Way. It avoids the extremes of pure asceticism and hedonism. Un-enlightened people will of course make mistakes in this regard and go to extremes in whatever they do.

Who’s Zorba? if anyone could tell.
While Zorba is definitely a lover and would surrender deeply to man and woman, he was also strangely a misogynist.
Does that not contradict things? Perhaps it's because of his lack of awareness like Osho mentions and that he was influenced by the culture around him, yet there are also elements that suggest his awareness was quite sharp.
He lived in the moment. He lived totally and followed his intuition. He followed his madness and said no to logic and rationality in order to receive all there is to experience through his direct awareness.
I would have loved to have had this discussion with Osho to dive deeper into his conclusion. Anyone else have any thoughts on this?

I will give props to Osho for paying respect to Zorba, its the best thing thats ever come out of his mouth. Although I still think he is the poster child for a wolf with sheep's clothing.

I imagine as a Philosophy Professor he was well aware of Nietzsche's proposed synthesis of the 'New Man' his "Ceaser with the soul of Christ". I'm pretty sure Oshos Zorba the Buddha was a version of something like that, only its also cleverly a combination of East and West as well as Spirit and Instinct.
Obviously Zorba is a relatively new character created by Kazantzakis. Its very interesting that even the book (Zorba the Greek), is about a psychological synthesis.. A bookish intellectual has an encounter with a man of instinct (Zorba), and he teaches him how to get out of his head and enjoy life haha
