its all about the suez canal. somalia is strategically located at the mouth of the red sea leading to the suez canal. there are various places around the world that are of the upmost importance to control because of their location. any country on the coastline of the red sea or the Mediterranean is important. the location of somalia and ethiopia are so strategic that the inhabitants can literally stop the flow of international trade that must flow through that region or be forced to sail around the entire continent of africa. that is why Egypt was so powerful in ancient times and is the reason for israels criminal takover of palestine. its about trade. whoever controls those regions is automatically a global superpower.

chillhomie7 "The non-African ancestry in the HOA, which is primarily attributed to a novel Ethio-Somali inferred ancestry component, is significantly differentiated from all neighboring non-African ancestries in North Africa, the Levant, and Arabia. The Ethio-Somali ancestry is found in all admixed HOA ethnic groups, shows little inter-individual variance within these ethnic groups, is estimated to have diverged from all other non-African ancestries by at least 23 ka, and does not carry the unique Arabian lactase persistence allele that arose about 4 ka. Taking into account published mitochondrial, Y chromosome, paleoclimate, and archaeological data, we find that the time of the Ethio-Somali back-to-Africa migration is most likely pre-agricultural."

So many nasty comments here. People should really educate themselves before presenting themselves as idiots.
People that call Somalia a shit hole must realize that they've gone through a civil war (and are still today fighting Al-Shabab terrorists) for over 20 years. War isn't pretty. Google old pictures of Mogadishu from the 60s and 70s and you will see why it was nicknamed the "white pearl of Africa". Somalia also enjoys the longest coastline in Africa with great tourism potential. The country is slowly but surely finding peace and it's being re-built. The country also has a lot of natural resources, a young work force and a relatively low population. With the majority of Somalis being in the diaspora, the potential for FDI is huge.
To Somalis, I'd say ignore the comments. Focus on strengthening your community and developing your country. With good leadership, Somalia will be one of the best countries in Africa.
    Peace from your Ethiopian neighbor.

To call the post-invasion governments of Iraq and Libya democratic is a bit of a stretch. Plutocracy, patrimonialism and neo-colonialism are by my definition not democratic. None of these “democracies” are led by the people themselves. They are generally infested by vested interests through systems of capitalism and statism.

I found this very beautiful, in that they cover a place known to many westerners only for war, and show in small daily moments the similar humanity that stretches across our world and links us even if we dont see or acknowledge it. It showed the vitality and hope that flourishes beneath an old and stubborn conflict. There is a glow that animates each face they present... A contagious and effervescent joy that refuses to be oppressed no matter the circumstance.
And what a talented poet to serve as backdrop!

They smile, they find joy, and they find the celebrations of life while others with short sight and bitter hearts try to destroy.

    • @vragenstaatvrij777

It's impossible to build a decent state upon the koran or islam. Islam is not tolerant, it discriminates other beliefs and women, doesn't encourage creativity and has a strong inclination to violent fanatism. Somalia is destroyed by islam, just like Syria, Iraq and so many other places. With a book as the koran or a warlord as Mohammed, violence will never stop. Islam is wrong in its fundaments.
