- On October 11, 1994, 5 outcasts from Bakersfield, California released one of the most important albums of the 20th century. Their self-titled debut record which was released via independent Los Angeles label Immortal, would come to be seen by many as the birth of Nu-Metal.
Korn would be considered as the pioneers of a genre that dominated tv screens and radio waves for over a decade. A genre that would also give birth to bands such as Linkin Park, Limp Bizkit, Papa Roach and Deftones.
From high school drop-outs to born-again Christians, Korn have become an iconic influence in the world of Heavy Metal and this is their story.
Jonathan Davis was born January 18, 1971, in Bakersfield, California. And his childhood would be that of any typically neglected one. His father, Rick Davis, a keyboard player for Frank Zappa, and his mother, Holly Marie, who was an aspiring actress & dancer, both seemed to be more interested in chasing their own dreams of becoming stars on the big stage as opposed to providing a stable environment to raise Jonathan, who also had sister and two other step siblings.

Yeah, I still get chills when that comes across my speakers. Now a middle aged dad, I get a laugh about it but it still hits hard.

Korn is such a unique band in that every member is equally important which is rare.
Yep, that's the whole nu metal genre as a whole though, right? That's one of the best parts about nu metal, all the members are equally important and all play their own crucial role in the band. The music nu metal bands create is simple yet very effective, much like Nirvana's music in my opinion.

I got to meet them after their one of their shows and have pics as well, Jon is probably the most humble person you'd ever meet. Ray is also a cool guy.

As a Bakersfield resident, I agree with Jonathan’s sentiments on the city lol. Still see him and HEAD around town every now and then, though.
I grew up in Oildale for most of my life. I still live in Bakersfield, but I live more in the Rosedale area nowadays. I moved several times to Florida, and Texas, but I always ended up coming back to Oildale. I remember when there was nothing but old houses, and oil fields for miles. Now it has gotten a lot better, but certain parts of Oildale are still pretty ran down, and the people are still the same.

I can remember discovering Korn. I was watching the music video for Freak on a Leash on MTV, being hypnotized with the bullet. Then came Jonathan's vocal moment ending with Go! Followed by the most heavy chords after that. Giving goosebumps and thinking "wow, what is this sensation!?"

yeah, if it wasnt for MTV i wouldnt have known KoRn.. after listening to follow the leader, i went to listen their first and 2nd.. Clown is my favourite, and i even play in a KoRn cover band.. theres something Cool about playing KoRn music at that time..

The first song I heard by Korn was " Shoots and Ladders" and I thought they were brilliant!!! I was not wrong....saw them in 1996 when they opened for Ozzy....amazing show!

Adidas was the first song I heard in 5th grade even though “Follow the Leader” had just came out. It’s still my favorite Korn song to this day.
They were definitely an explosive live band. I hadn't gotten into them too much, but they opened with Flotsam and Jetsam for Megadeth in 95 (I think), and once I saw them, I was hooked.
It is brilliant!! The first time I heard it I got chills from the first note... and cried at the end but at the time didn't know why. Pure emotion . That's what making music's about. Ripping out your heart and soul for all to see. For me anyway 🤘🏻

KoRn, Manson, Zombie, Nirvana and NIN all helped me get through my f**ked up teenage years. Between school and home life. Their music and video games gave me an escape. I still listen to all of these guys and more today.

His groovy playstyle was my main influence for starting to play drums.
One of my main rules for my kids was never bully others and defend those being bullied. I never knew it, but all through high school my son routinely defended and included a boy named David. David has asbergers. David’s Dad came up to me at graduation and told me that he appreciated my son’s kindness and inclusion of David in HS. I was proud of my son. Kids are very cruel. I was cruel to others in HS and feel horrible about it to this day.
That's awesome man! I hope to instill that mindset in my daughter. I was bullied mercilessly all throughout k-12 to a point I've blakced it all out. After watching a few of these nu metal documentaries on this channel it finally dawned on me (as in, i finally have the words to express) why, even tho I'm an inner city black girl, my the words of these bands spoke to me so much. Reflecting on this as an adult is wild!
Kids pay for the sins of their parents
Bullying makes people stronger. It's up to the parents to teach children how to process bullying. My mother always said just agree with them for everything no matter what they say and I did and it worked. The bullies had no fuel anymore because "I was everything they said I was". It's reverse psychology and it works. Plus if no bullying, no korn lol

I was born in 94, my dad plays guitar and drums and loved Korn... so I was raised on them. Used to fall asleep in front of my dads amp while he practiced their music. Still my favorite band to this day!

I feel ya! I spent the weekend with them in 97 lollapalooza Raleigh Charlotte NC. BEST WEEKEND OF MY LIFE! We watched Holyfield/Tyson fight with tool and Snoop and Snoop smoked MY weed! 🤣

Korn is great but they can't hold a bloody candle to Pantera for the 90s! Pantera stayed true to the roots of metal, kept it alive and made it more brutally honest than ever b4! When at the same time the metal fad was spandex, make up, hair, ballads and an all around pussification! I reveal in the fact that that crap is dead age gone! Metal is king, long live the king!
@@moshfreak900 Pantera started out as a hair band. Lol which I don't have anything against. Just brought it up because you mentioned hair bands. Pantera and Korn are in separate sub-genres of metal. Both are iconic and have forever left imprints in the Metal world.

Yea I can feel that. I grew up on 70s and 80s rock so rock was like my parent music. Nothing wrong with that but I was a predominantly rap listener but Korn gave me my own rock they didn't share in and new appreciation it! The heavy basslines and the bit of rap/rock of "numetal" appealed to kids like me. Too many bands tried to do it and ruined the sound but Korn man nothing sounds like Korn man that band is still my shit

I first heard of Korn when I saw them live in October 1994. I went to a Danzig show at the then Newport Music Hall in Columbus, Ohio. There were two opening bands, first Korn, then Marilyn Manson. I had just turned 14 a month before the show. I’ll never forget it. It was an amazing experience and a pretty surreal lineup to think about these days.
I saw Korn again not long after that at The Alrosa Villa in Columbus. They opened up for Monster Magnet.
Amazing right?!? I saw Korn and the Deftones at Lupos in Providence in '95. I don't care what anyone said then, and I care less now. We were there for something very special.

That tour was the first I'd heard of and seen both Korn and Marilyn Manson. I went to see Danzig.
However, I was far more impressed with the two opening acts than with Danzig. 😂😂. Been listening to them ever since.

Awesome the connection different eras and styles of music can create! Its art itself. Musical evolution is ever evolving. But POP music has really become dumbed down and stale. Glad I grew out of POP when GNR Use your Illusion came out and Alternative Nation happened at Eastern Creek back in 95. Expanded my musical tastes to levels I never knew.
Got The Life was the song that inspired me to start playing guitar back in the late 90s!
@@trevor5071 Literally pretty much any human being who lives in the USA over the age of 38 has most likely heard Korn before. They were a household name back in the 90s, even if you hated the band literally every one had friends or family members who was absolutely obsessed with them! You would go to the mall on the weekends and there would be people dressed up like Marilyn Manson with the makeup on their face and everything, looking just like Manson, and you would see Korn shirts everywhere too! The 90s was crazy! It doesn't matter if you're in your 60's or 70's now if you lived through the 90's you most likely know who Korn is, regardless if you're a fan or not.
For the "DEFTONES CAME BEFORE KORN" comments: Yes, Deftones FORMED before Korn, but Korn were successful on a globally commercial level way before Deftones, hence why Korn are seen as the pioneers of the Nu-Metal genre.
Also, L.A.P.D. formed in 1989 that featured members of Korn. Deftones started in 88 and had their first "solid" line-up around 1994. If it wasn't for Korn, Deftones wouldn't have had a huge alternative and commercial audience to be exposed to.

I’m 41 now but when freak on the leash video came up I was 17-18 , remember I couldn’t stop waiting to see the video again again And the part that sound like rapping was and still mind blowing .
One of my first concerts as a teen was Pantera with Korn opening up for them in like 1994 or 95 at Red Rocks amphitheater in Colorado. Was one of the best shows I've ever seen right below Tool that same summer at Red Rocks also. Great documentary thanks

I was introduced to Korn in high school 2 days after the issues cd came out. Korn and Kittie we're the first two rock groups I ever heard and Korn is permanently apart of my soul. Grew up with them, still loving them, still listing to them, still grateful for them. Korn kept me alive for a fact. I owe them everything.
I've loved Korn from the moment I was given the first cassete tape (the self debut album) by one of my friends:) This band became of instant success since their debut album, and I've experienced it while being at the end of the world in Eastern Europe:))) so scratch that about the band struggling to make it big, they were BIG from the very beginning!!!!
I had just moved to a new town the summer of 99 and my first friend i made at school introduced me to korn / nu metal in general. Korn was my battle cry growing up, they kept me going, thry gave me an outlet and a coping mechanism to know that yeah you can grow up and go through some shit but you arent alone, you can come out the other side and make something of yourself. Thank you korn for saving me on an almoat daily basis. Side fun note: my mom took me to my first concert ever when i was 14 in 2002 and i will never forget it.

When I was 13, freak on a leash hit, as a skinny white boy from near branson missouri, I grew up surrounded by hicks listening to country music. Needless to say korn was a formative part of my youth. They have always been one of my favorites. I was lucky enough to see them live about 2 weeks ago in Springfield mo. And for a band going on 30 years on the road, they have one of the tightest, well planned live shows I have ever seen. Every single band member 100% on point and giving it their all. Thank you korn....

Great documentary. Brought back so many memories. Living in NY it took a little longer for us to catch on. I was in 10th grade listening to Metallica and my skater friend came over said yo check this out and gave me his Walkman to listen. It was Blind. I was hooked. 11th grade was nothing but Korn shirts and ADIDAS shirts writing KORN all over the place. Deftones, Coal Chamber, Slipknot, SOAD, Soulfly. Man graduated high school 2000 and those bands were my soundtrack. I still have the first three CDs somewhere in a box. Listen to them just the other day, still know every word.
Korn is one of those bands that when you hear them for the first time you never forget where you were and what you were doing when you heard them for the first time!
My parents saw Korn right before they got big and no one in the crowd knew who they were but my dad says everyone walked out of that venue being a korn fan

I mean I love this music/scene and I was never bullied in high school. I loved high school. We pretty much owned our school as Juniors but we would stick up for the kids being bullied by jocks. That was part of a problem we had with the jocks who were seniors when we were juniors. They didn’t like we owned the school since seniors are supposed to top ppl on campus. Plus they were bullies cuz they were all rich. Like their families. Don’t worry about it my guy. I know it’s hard now but trust me, in the grand scheme of life none of this shit matters. Just keep up getting good grades and when you get to being a junior it’ll be a distant memory. I wish I could go back and care more about my schoolwork than getting fucked up with my friends.

I've fan of KoЯn since 2002 at the age of 9 and now I'm 29. I've been listening to KoЯn 19 years now and I'm not going to stop. And I've seen them live 15 times lol.
I saw them in a small club in 1994 in Lawrence, Kansas. And again in 1999 at a huge arena in Olympia, Wa
Got my first KoRn CD back in 95. They're the first band that got me into music, became my obsession growing up.
sadly, as the years went on their sound progressed into something that just didn't appeal to me... Which sucks because deep down they're still me fav band.
The best most classic Korn albums and era were when David was the Drummer. They can put out 5 more albums with the new drummer I'll always prefer the first 7 albums
You arnt alone on this. But for me, the music never truly wavered. The first album without David, SYOTOS, is one of my favorites, even the B side tracks are good. Songs like Too Late I'm Dead. So good.
I love the followed untitled album just as much. I even loved JDs experiment with dubstep, TPOT! Which was probably their lowest point, simply in terms of the amount of hate they were getting from the "old guard" fans.
When the were on the tour supporting TPOT, droves of people qere walking out of the show when they played a block of songs from the album. How sad! That album is soooo good. JD has some of his darkest growliest sounding vocals in some of those songs

Saw them in 2000 during their Issues tour. One hell of a concert and one i'll never forget. I loved when the show started off with Davis playing the bagpipes. Definitely a band you must see live!
That's a great band for you! The great bands are the ones you see in concert and you never forget that experience, I can relate when I saw Pantera live it was amazing and it still feels like it happened recently because I will never forget that experience of seeing Pantera live! Coal Chamber is another one I'll never forget.

I remember buying Sepultura's Roots back then. I was surprised but stoked when I heard JD on Lookaway. The golden age was when the likes of Korn, Deftones, Sepultura/Soulfly, Fear Factory and others were all over one another's records.

I’m 34. Listened to Korn a ton in high school with my black and blue hair, along with Tool and NIN. Good times. That music got me through a lot. Soothed my soul. Still does.
I was a teenager in highschool when i heard about Korn. I loved them instantly. They become my No.1 band, and they still are even today.

Man I was 9 years old in '98, got my first drum set for Christmas. Played the same four count to literally every song for like a year before I started developing skills. Had started to get into heavy metal by fourth grade and heard SlipKnoT's "Self-Titled" album, completely changed my life. Korn become one of those bands that just blew me away. When they dropped "Take a look in the Mirror", with that amped up base, I learned to play every song off that album, that was the first time I had played an entire album and learned every song. Man I miss the early 2000's some of the best music came out!!!

I wasn’t even born when they formed but I definitely grew up on them my step dad introduced me to them amongst other great bands . I was born in 96 but there music really did help me a lot growing up and still do . Thankful I’ve got to see them and hopefully again this august !
One of my favorite Korn memories.
Korn was doing a big promo for Follow the leader and did a record store signing. I heard about this on the radio and drove like 2 hours to this record store outside of the Detroit area. They showed up in the back of a monster truck (big foot/grave digger style). The line was immense, but they were so cool and took time to talk to everyone that came thru that line. It was my first time meeting BIG rock stars and my eyes must have looked like hub caps because when i moved down the table to Munky , he looked up at me and smiled...said..."hey man, you ok?" I just shook my head and barely got out a "yeah" because i was tongue tied.
Fast forward to just a a few years ago when they did short anniversary run of that album and played a few select cities in smaller venues, i saw them at the Masonic theater in SF. They played just about the entire album and did a few of their most popular tracks.
The show was off the (wallet) chain!!! :)
My friend played bagpipes and we always thought "how cool would it be to incorporate them into metal". Sure enough one Beavis & Butthead episode in `94 there is Korn, and was hooked ever since.
Going to see them on the 10th.... Its been my favorite band since I was 14, and im 40 now. Ive never had a chance to see them so Im beyond fucking excited.

Same, Korn is my fav band ever! About 20 years now, since I was 12, but I've never had the opportunity to go to any live concert. But FINALLY, I have tickets to see Korn in Sept! It's finally happenning! My 1st concert, & it's my fav band! Can't wait!

Same here. Introduced to them in high school in 96/97. Hands down favorite band of all time. I've seen them about 6 times. I just took my 9yo son to see them. It was his first concert. You are definitely in for a good time. Prepare to have your world rocked
Was in highschool when a mates older brother showed us korn self titled!! Blew our minds then life is peachy came out not long after, was easily one of the most influential bands through my highschool years then led me onto a whole new universe of metal

I am one of those people that Korn saved...
without their music and the darkness that came with it I would not be here. I grew up in foster care and lockdown facility group homes there was not a band in the world that I felt like I could relate to until I heard Korn for the first time.

Korn has been my favorite band since their first release. Seen them live 5 times now I believe. Seeing them in 2019 after so many years was just as good, if not better! They have one of the best live performances hands down!

In one interview Head talks about " the Bungle chord" which influenced his guitar playing. The Korn chord & Bungle chord are just complete chaos. I once showed this guitar chord shape to a guitar teacher & the look on his face🤣 omg ..
I've listened to koRn from the beginning Limp Bizkit was an opener tossing demos into the crowd in New Orleans of 96 right before they dropped their second album. Will always support this band, much love for them.

Back when I was in high school, koRn came out, and I was nicknamed koRnbread because was always wearing koRn t-shirt to school. And listened to them all the time and still do to this day.
If I ever get to sea koRn live in concert it will be an amazing day for me. And if I could ever meet the band that would be another level of excitement for me.
Being 16 in 1996, Korn helped me get through a lot and I'm so thankful I was alive when they were at their prime.

Fan since day one! I first saw Shoots and Ladders, and thought, "This shits freaky as fuck. I LOVE IT!" Little did i know, Blind had come before. I went digging and found it, ended up buying the first album. And its been a fucked up love affair/addiction since. Do i like it all? Of course not, theres always gonna be something you just dont like. But ill tell ya this fam. Id rather listen to a mix of the whole of Korns music on an endless loop, then pretty much anything else. I even share a Bday with JD. And i firmly consider him my "Soul Twin", given my own fucked up thoughts etc. Regardless, Korn was...is...and forever will be, my number one, go to, band.

To me korn is fall weather near Halloween, a fresh pair of Adidas, a butten up flannel buttoned all the way up, and life is peachy on the speakers . Growing up in the 80s & 90s was dope!
Thanks to KoRn I got into real metal music and that changed my way of enjoying music. I love from Alice In Chains, Slipknot and Sepultura (with Max Cavalera, big fan here) to KoRn witch became my favorite band. I love those brutal songs from earlier KoRn more than the actual. But it’s my all time favorite band. Thank you KoRn for everything!! KoRn 4ever!! By the way thanks for this very impressive video!

My mom went to school with Jonathan at highland and told me how he was bullied, my mom was I guess apart of the in crowd. Never really knew this growing up, but took a liking to Korn, kind of odd kid out and went to highland also. I hated Bakersfield, still do. When I had my first son I was gonna buy a house in east Bakersfield because it was all I could afford at the time. Decided to pull out of buying then move my family away. Korn got me threw a lot and felt insanely relatable.
I still go see Korn yearly for the past decade. They get better every year. Aging like fine wine!

At the time KORN came out, there were so many bands trying so hard to have a unique sound, that forgot about the music. Yeah, you're unique, but your music's shit. KORN was somehow able to come up with a completely unique sound and music that is FN AWESOME. One of my all time favorites

I’ve crossed korn a longg time ago, not too long. I don’t know specifically when. once I crossed them it felt like I opened a mysterious book I found in a forgotten ruins of a once popular village. When I listened to their music I felt like I was being understood. I was understood. The band has no idea of my presence but they know there’s people listening to them. They addressed their issues openly. I’ve seen some fucked up shit and it’s taken a fucked up toll on me, and it still bothers me till this day. When I’m angry by the smallest thing or the worst thing possible I turn on my vinyl or I turn on my phone and I jam the fuck out to some of my favorite metal bands. Music has always been there, if there was no music on this world the human existence would be fucking extinct trust me. Something like that. Nu metal calms me down when I feel angry, I don’t know why or how but I guess the loud dark emotionals made me forget what I was even pissed off about. When I opened the book of korn it just sucked me in and I feel 0 regret. I appreciate korn so much, never been to a concert but maybe I will someday. Korn makes me feel human because I’ve learned that my sickness, the ill swarming in my brain isn’t natural but I’m not the only person on earth who feels that sort of way. The horrible thoughts that pop up without my fucking consent, it makes me hate myself but I learn that it’s not in my control. Korn speaks up on things that I myself cant, but their music helps me recognize the emotion I’m feeling. My favorite songs by them spans from hollow life, got the life, make me bad, beg for me, thoughtless, wake up, insane, and mr. Rogers. They all wake me up. Thanks to korn, I’ve been able to slowly piece together the puzzle of the person I could possibly actually be. anyways I sound fucking creepy

Wow, that's very impressive! I wonder what kind of affect working as a coroner's assistant had on Jonathan considering he was only a teenager at the time? I bet it really helped motivate him to become the person he is today.

Growing up in Bulgaria in a disfunctional abusive family, today I know they really saved my life. I still work on the trauma and their music still helps me process my feelings and the memories. I will forever be grateful for Korn and their music.
That’s good to hear. The type of familial abuse and trauma that never goes away, but nevertheless becomes easier to handle and eventually understand one day. I’m sorry you had to go through such unwarranted agony and unbelievable loss. Keep fighting on and walk forward with your head looking forward to the future.

I didn’t hear Korn cos I’m old until Mark Radcliffe played Here To Stay amongst all the pop fodder of an afternoon BBC Radio 1 programme in 2002. I couldn’t believe what I was hearing considering it was blasting from a radio on a building site ! I went out and bought the album - the 1st ‘ metal ‘ I’d payed for since Faith No Mores’ The Real Thing in 1990. Thanks for your work 👍
