- Ok so I have resisted the push to react to Babymetal. I've hears a couple songs and was NOT on the Babymetal Koolaid express and FINALLY, I gave in and decided to react, by request. So, I watched the live video for Catch Me if You Can. I won't reveal what I thought. You'll have to watch and see.

52 year old metal head here. No, it's not "traditional" metal. All I can say is that when I listen to Babymetal I'm happy.
Most of us were in the "WTF is this?" camp who listened to their first songs with a big emphasis on Metal & Jpop like this song and Gimme Chocolate. Some people dismiss them as a "gimmick" band, but I prefer the term "experimental". They experiment with mixing a LOT of genres and it's all done with homage to other metal and various artists from different genres, as well as collaborations with some of them. The quality of their band, the shows, the choreo has always been top notch.
When you listen to their early songs, you have to remember that they were quite young, and the songs were tailored to that. Doki-Doki-Morning, Gimme Chocolate, CMIYC, Megitsune, Iine, Ijime, Dane, Zettai, Yava and the like. And even those songs had a message behind them. As they got older and matured, the music also changed, added genres and collaborations, got heavier and they evolved. Their first video was D,D,M and Su was 13 and Moa and Yui were 11. They had a very tough regimen from when they started in 2010 with choreography and building up the cardio for their non-stop performances, and still having to go to school. So brushing them off without a thought and automatically think "gimmick" has turned out to be misplaced. When they did their first overseas tour in 2014 at Knebworth in England, they were thrust from a side stage to the center stage with 60,000 of the toughest music fans on Earth to satisfy, and they did. They really are a force in metal.
Hi, I have seen the girls cry while performing an emotional song, I have seen them laugh performing a funny song, but I have never seen them disrespect anyone ever. I have seen Metallica embrace them when they toured with Babymetal, I have seen Red Hot Chilly Pepper sing happy birthday to lead singer SuMetal when they were touring, I have seen Slipknot talk about the band with total respect, I heard Bring Me The Horizon and BabyMetal do an amazing song together, known as KINGSLAYER, which Oli praised. Sabaton just finished a tour with the band, which was so much fun to see. The stories just keep continuing from bands like, Korn, Rob Halford, XJapan, Nemophila, Gun @ Roses, and most of these bands have toured with them. The girls treat all bands with such kindness, and they have become special to so many performers like myself. Being a Metalhead and a retired Metal guitarist, I was confused at first, but I got it when I saw them at Download when they were 14-16 years old, which was amazing. There is no one like them, and they won my respect and heart to be honest. I think I understand what you are saying, and it's your choice to either enjoy them or decide they are not your cup of tea. Some hard core Metal reviewers go out of there way to put them down, which does not represent the awesome Metal community I grew up in. By the way, the Kami band that backs the girls are a power house imo. BabyMetal crowds in Japan reach 20,000 - 52,000 a night, but they do much smaller concerts all over the world, which is respectable. Babymetal and Dethklok are touring the US in September. Don't go back to 'Chocolate' yet. Look at 'Road of Resistance, Live in Japan'. That is possibly the single most informative video for summing up the potential of the act.
Yeah, after the first BABYMETAL video I saw kind of wrote them off for 10 years. I never gave them another glance until a couple of years ago I saw their music video for 'Karate' and I realised they weren't entirely crap. After a bit more digging I finally got the bigger picture. I still don't like every detail in that picture but the project as a whole is extraordinary.
The backing band, The Kami Band, is anything but an anonymous metal band - even though BABYMETAL's control-freak manager/producer dickhead has done his best to make them one. In this compilation video the members you see are:
Mikio Fujioka (deceased): guitar
Takayoshi Ohmura: guitar
BOH, 6-string god of bass
Hideki Aoyama: drums
Mikio (RIP) was Ohmura's guitar tutor at Musician's Institute Japan. He was an extraordinary player in all genres from jazz to metal. Sadly he died after a fall from an astronomical observation platform. The two guitarists went from instructor and student to friends and bandmates. Mikio's death devastated Ohmura and these days he plays one of Mikio's guitars at most BABYMETAL gigs, or at least has one with him.

Always glad to see metalheads open-minded and giving this group another chance, this is the best thing that could ever happened to metal scene, and one of the reasons metal and rock legends gave their bless is because the insane level of professionalism and dedicated hard work like no other group before, after BabyMetal the J-metal and J-rock scene with many female bands opened to the world, you mentioned X-Japan, Yoshiki is another good friend of BM, they even got some songs heavily tribute to X and Yoshiki.
BabyMetal is a Japanese metal dance unit created in 2010 under another Jpop/Jrock group called Sakura Gakuin, they had 11 and 12 years old when started this and become independent after 2013, they created their own genre called kawaii-metal mixing Jpop with metal sound and different subgenres along with many more rhythms. Their name is a reference to a new genre and not related to their ages or "baby" faces, is a pun intended play words with "heavy-metal" which sounds similar to "baby-metal".
They are:
*SuMetal* lead vocalist, now 25.
*MoaMetal* scream and dance, now 23.
*YuiMetal* scream and dance, former member since 2018.
*MomoMetal* scream and dance, she's 20 and is the new official member since April 1st recently.
None of them are related.
After 2018 you'll see backup dancers performing along with them but none of them are official members, they don't sing, only dance, but that status change recently like i said.
This song is among many BM fans one of the most representative of their kawaii metal sound, is heavy but is cute or kawaii at the same time with so much energy and crazy circle pits and mosh from the crowd.
This was a live compilation but you can find some of the original clips safe to react without the need of this live comps such Budokan Arena 2014 reaching a huge milestone with only 14 and 16 yo, after this they started the World Tour and reach the Sonisphere Festival in Europe reaching another huge milestone.
The Kami Band is a set of elite session musicians, they got another set of band coming from the west so you won't see always the same playing at live concerts. All of them are possessed by the Fox God the moment they step up on the stage, and I'm not even joking 🦊🤘
This crazy beautiful song is about hide & seek tag game, but isn't just any other regular child play, they're playing with an Oni, a mythological japanese creature human flesh eater 👹👀
This is heavy af.
You can also noticed the punk section, many people reminds it the sound of some of the US rock punk like The Offspring or Green Day, and the heavy part got some Slipknot - (sic) vibes.
Kami Band intro are rare and only on certain songs but throughout different live performance you'll hear slightly different changes because like said, not always were the same members and even the same members sometimes change their solo a little bit.
If you want another melting faces intro you should go for:
- Rondo Of Nightmare, with Mischiefs Of Metal Gods Intro live at Budokan, is a SuMetal solo and I'm pretty sure you're gonna love it, "Kawaii Metal" got the clip.
Rob Halford is another BM friend, they play together on the stage at APMA awards 2016.
Like you already know they got a new album with a more mature sound but at live concerts like recently in Europe, Asian and Australian Tour you can enjoy some of their greatest hits that everybody love.

That was pretty fun watching you start with arms crossed and almost a scowl on your face, to smiling. One thing I hope you've noticed. Each one of the 3 songs you've mentioned from Babymetal are very different from each other. You'll find that about every Babymetal song. So when you said there will be songs you like and songs you don't like, that might very well happen.
Metalizm is a strange one. Personally, it isn't my favorite Babymetal song, and I don't know I'd consider that a good Babymetal song to react to for the first few times. Regardless though, even if in the end you find that majority of the Babymetal stuff you don't like, so long as you say it in a non-insulting way, I'm pretty sure you'll find that the Babymetal community will be totally behind you and support you for at least trying. Speaking of Rob Halford, I don't know if you know this, but Babymetal actually performed with him for a couple of songs. So if you want to have some fun, search that up and react to it. You'll probably like it. Lastly, Babymetal's music has matured as the girls have gotten older, their voices have become better (not they ever had bad voices, but their voices have become richer and more vibrant I find), and the girls have gotten more confident as well, and it shows. Glad you were able to enjoy this song. I think you'd also enjoy Rondo of Nightmare and Road of Resistance as well.

Great "first" reaction, thanks for the mind reset and giving them another chance and welcome to the BABYMETAL Foxhole.🦊 'Catch Me If You Can' is the best metal song about playing a game that's a sort of cross between tag, blind man's bluff and hide & seek I've ever heard. It is the perfect mix of the two extremes with the brutal instrumentals and the sweet vocals - and the game they are playing, they're playing with an Oni 👹(a sort of Japanese ogre popular in regional festivals and used specifically to frighten children ... which amuses me probably more than it should).
The growling vocals (they are on a backing track) are the Oni👹 asking things like "Are you ready?" and the best response has to be "Maada da yo" (No, not yet) while doing a running away from an Oni dance.🏃♀🏃♀🏃♀👹
This was a compilation video with clips from 10 different concerts from 2013 through to 2017.
The Kami Band are the instrumentalists supporting BABYMETAL - in this they were just doing one of their intros - its only fair they get their chance to show off during the shows and there are two or three other songs where they would do an instrumental intro like this. In order of solos in this video they were - Mikio Fujioka (RIP January 2018), Takayoshi Ohmura, BOH on the bass and Hideki Aoyama on drums.
On their history - lucky for us their producer Kei Kobayashi saw Suzuka Nakamoto aka Su-metal in her previous group and he was so impressed with her very loud (for a pop Idol) and full on singing style and stage presence that he was inspired to have her front a Metal-JPop fusion band (he is a lifelong metalhead) ... she was still only about 11 when he saw her for the first time.
In 2010 the Amuse Talent Agency set up a school themed J-Pop Idol group called Sakura Gakuin as a way to coach and train about a dozen of the most talented girls on their books in all aspects of entertainment (singing, dancing, acting, modelling, writing, stage management etc) with a view to their choosing how they would like to continue their career when they were at school leaving age (15 in Japan).
Sakura Gakuin was for girls aged 10 to 15 and had a school theme. Within that theme there were sub-units with themes like after school clubs (cooking, tennis, science etc) and three or four of the girls would be in each 'club' and they would have their own themed song and dance routines to perform at Sakura Gakuin shows and at Idol festivals.
Kobayashi got his chance to work with Suzuka and BABYMETAL formed as the Heavy Music club with Su-metal as lead vocalist (she does not growl etc, her vocals are clean and very clear, but she is so versatile and gifted and the whole concept was formed around her) and her two young friends Yui Mizuno (Yuimetal) and Moa Kikuchi (Moametal) providing backing vocals, harmonies and in charge of getting the audience involved and hyped with their choreographed dancing.
Su was 12, Yui and Moa were 11.
Amuse were not impressed with the idea of BABYMETAL, they could see no commercial value, no future and provided no extra budget, but they allowed Kobayashi to have his pet project as there was no financial risk - they just thought it would be a short-lived and failed experiment and that the girls would eventually continue with JPop.
Against all the odds and everybody's expectations BABYMETAL found a new audience that nobody had foreseen happening and they started to grow in popularity.
In 2013 Su would be 15 and would graduate from Sakura Gakuin (having the school theme it was for girls aged 10 to 15), but it was decided that BABYMETAL should be her vehicle as she furthered her career as a vocalist and should separate from the Idol group to go with her as an independent band in their own right. Yui and Moa also agreed to continue with BABYMETAL as they also took this next step in their own careers - but they had 2 more years until they would graduate from Sakura Gakuin, so they were working in both groups for those two years.
They have gone on to become one of the very best live bands on the planet (and have won international awards to prove that is not just my opinion). Their big arena shows are spectacular, but they put on great shows every time, even in smaller venues and festivals as they tour the world where they can't always have all the special effects and flames etc too.
They started without a backing band, they sang and danced to pre-recorded instrumentals on a backing track. Now they are supported in live shows by the Kami Band who you saw and heard here - some of Japan's very best session musicians, each one of them a world class instrumentalist. There are many people who have played in the Kami band, but they only have 2 guitarists, 1 bass player and 1 drummer for each concert (there was an exception to that rule for a special occasion in 2020, but this comment will be too long already without explaining that).
The Kami Band were phased in gradually after October 2012 playing a couple of festivals and the encores in a few shows. They became the full time support for all live shows at the start of 2014 and have been with BABYMETAL ever since - but only for live shows, they do not record the studio versions.
The Kami Band of the West - American musicians have supported BABYMETAL in the more extended foreign tours since 2019.
BABYMETAL are pretty much unique in that they invented their own genre and their own way of doing things. You are right not to categorise them as just one thing or to put them in any one box like you can with most other bands. You will not be able to predict them, just expect the unexpected. They don't copy anybody or follow the same format as nearly every other band (for a start they have brought choreographed dance to metal).
They have about 60 songs now, each one different to the last, they have songs in virtually every metal genre but will also mix and blend so many other styles and genres with the metal. Some songs are good hard metal, some lean towards their pop roots and they do everything in between.
I'm sure you will get suggestions for more reactions - pick any song, ideally a live performance.
Oh yes the name BABYMETAL is not about their age (although when they started in 2010 they were aged 12 and 11 so it probably did play a part too). The name was chosen for two reasons:
- to symbolise that they gave birth to a new genre of metal music (kawaii metal)
- because the writing (and pronunciation) in Japanese is nearly identical to the writing of "heavy metal" (and they love a pun):
BABYMETAL = ベビーメタル (be-bi-me-ta-ru)
heavy metal = ヘビーメタル (he-bi-me-ta-ru)
I think 'Megitsune' is the best song to introduce people to BABYMETAL with. The official video is very good, personally I'd go with a live performance (others will disagree with me).

Great honest reaction, I scribed: I think of BABYMETAL as “feel good metal”. Most of their song lyrics are very uplifting. I like the live performance videos because the audience is part or their show, as well as the visual dancing. Having said that, every song on their new album is just delightful to my ears. I also watch Netflix Korean and Chinese historical dramas with English subtitles. That probably helped me enjoy Su-metal’s Japanese vocals even more. I will be taking my son and his girlfriend to see them perform live this September. 🦊
Wow. It's honestly rare to see someone not only earnestly inspecting their own thought processes, motivations, and biases, but doing it on camera and posting it for the world to see. You have earned my respect not as a reactor, but as a person. Bravo, sir.
Also I would personally say that METALIZM is more of an "advanced" Babymetal song, something to check out once you have a better idea of their range. I would recommend Ijime Dame Zettai live at Sonisphere, Mirror Mirror (official video), Akatsuki live at Budokan Black Night, maybe Karate live at Download 2016 for your next foray.
46 and pretty new Babymetal fan, they skyrocketed to close to the top of my favorites.
The interesting thing is, that dichotomy of sounds between the dark heavy metal and high pitched cute voices that they were founded on? It no longer sounds even remotely strange or different to me any more. It literally sounds normal now to me haha. I absolutely love it all. You'd be blown away by their new stuff. More mature themes and sound and singing too. It's all epic
Go back and watch it (gimme chocolate). You’ll get it. I had the same reaction when I first heard Babymetal and now I’m going to their show in La. The first concert I’ve been to in 10 years. The song that did it for me was Ataksuki. Enjoy!

If you liked the beginning of this and the tone of the song, you should watch Rondo of Nightmare with Mischiefs of the Metal Gods intro. Also the vocals in that are insanely powerful, it a Su solo song. The lyrics are also very intense, unlike a lot of their songs.
He would be better off going further into the non-Su solo songs before getting around to a Su-solo.

I must say that I was 100% positive you were not going to like it considering the attitude displayed at the beginning. However, when I saw that smile part way through, I knew you had changed your mind about things. You either get it right away or after three songs (it is weird how it always seems to be 3 songs) or never. So, welcome to the Fox Hole! You would not be the first person who hated Gimme Choco at first listen and then loved it after listening to several other Babymetal songs. I really enjoy watching this process happen as people start to really understand Babymetal. Because your first exposure, on balance, is very often a jarring experience, and that's why you'll see a lot of Babymetal fans tell ppl that you really have to give it 3 songs when you start into them. Anyone that can sit through 3 Babymetal songs and honestly not be having a good time by the end just hates fun, lol.

The blend of metal and j-pop is definitely freely moving from song to song. some are heavier on the pop and side some are heavier on the metal side. but overall the musicianship is undeniable and so is Su's vocal ability. Babymetal is something I really enjoy in videos of their live performances but I don't have a lot of it in my playlists for general consumption. Hope you do more of them though :)

Generally, I'd always recommend their live performances as SuMetal is so impressive singing live but there are a couple of exceptions. The music video for "Megitsune" is a must watch, certainly one of their most iconic songs. Also, the music video for "Karate", this is the one I'd recommend you watch next. It was the song that completely won me over and sent me down the foxhole into the arms of The One.
"Road of Resistance" live in Japan is another cornerstone Babymetal performance, along with "Ijime, Dame, Zentai" from Sonisphere 2014. Sonisphere was a pivotal moment for the band, their first major European Festival, and with some metal elitists threatening to bottle them off, as they saw them as a gimmick band and not worthy to play at a metal festival. "IDZ" was the final song of their set, so you can judge for yourself how the crowd reacted to them.

You're far from the first person to bounce off Gimme Choko and then find something else in their catalogue that is more to your liking. Babymetal is an extremely diverse band in terms of the kinds of elements they include in their music, so no one song can really encapsulate what they are about. Babymetal is and has always been a hybrid of elements of metal and j-pop; the mix between the elements varies wildly from song to song. Some are very poppy, and others are extremely heavy. This song is kind of in the middle.
I think that if you come at Babymetal from a traditional metalhead's perspective, it's easy to view them cynically because they don't play the instruments and they don't write the songs like a typical metal band does, but if you view them as a theatrical stage production (which is what their live performances are) then they make a lot more sense and don't seem so out of place. I used to be a metal "elitist" who turned my nose up at Babymetal for a long time, but once I actually took the time to really listen to them and leave my preconceptions at the door, I found they were a breath of fresh air that brings something different, unique, and fun to metal.
Oh, also look up the video where babymetal and Rob Halford perform together on stage. Just be warn, the audio engineer messes on on Rob's vocals for the first half, just stick through it. It's a fun video. You get to see the girls perform with one of their idols, without all the choreography, and they have a blast doing it. Even Rob seems to just be having fun performing with the girls.
Thanks for doing this and for keeping an open mind...it was very much the same with me and many others in the foxhole, I just wish I'd done my revisit many years earlier! Also much respect for taking a step back and doing an active review to your own previous reaction having realised it was maybe clouded by some bias, very big of you.

Boss, you've not even begun to tap into the force of nature that is Babymetal. You're only at the cutesy phase. They cover the entire gammit. You want full on fretboard finger tangling prog metal? "Tales of the Destinies". You want full on power metal? "Road of Resistance". You want an 80's power ballad? "No Rain No Rainbow". You want a metal waltz? "Rondo of Nightmare." You want a spectacle? "Headbanger", "Metal Kingdom" or "Monochrome". You want Nu-metal? "Karate". There is no specific "Babymetal style" other than a mixing of genres that really does not exist anywhere. Being completely original while always paying homage to the metal greats. What you will always get with Babymetal is quality. Quality songcraft, quality musicianship, quality performances ( the girls rehearse until it's muscle memory and the musicians are always outstanding), and over the top quality productions. There arena shows rank up their with acts such as Rammstein. Their more intimate shows are an experience in and of themselves. Simply nothing like them live.
If you go back to Gimme Chocolate, you should react to an actual live version of it. Either Budokan 2014 if you want an old performance, or jump to (closer to) the present with Budokan 2021.

Great honest reaction! - Thank you!!! I am a 75 year old Japanese guy who used to (and still love) Metallica etc... But when I first encountered BABYMETAL, I was in a half-year pet loss (of a 18 year old dog), but was miraculously cured by BABYMETAL in one night! The song was Akatsuki (Budokan- 2014). Please read lyrics. It is about how love is yours and you should cherish forever. Since then I am now able to enjoy all my dog photos with a smile, and feel gratitude to my dog for giving so much to make my life richer. I live in DC, but flew all the way to Japan this January and am going to Spain in December for their final live for 2023. and I am not an exception. ( btw... we drove through 49 states with our dog!!! )

Most BADASS song about "hide and go seek" EVER!!! And their best song IMO, I'm 64 y/o, seen Zeppelin twice among other greats since the 70's and my first concerts. BABYMETAL are among the best I've ever seen, just bought a ticket to see them in Orlando, will be the third time I've seen them...
Great first reaction ... we could see you smiling.😁 I am so glad 'Gimme Chocolate' was not the first song I heard, I would have felt exactly as you did. You said about going back to listen to that again - give it another 5 or 6 songs before you do that - and when you do, make sure it is a live version and not the official video.
Likewise 'METALIZM' is a one-off, they throw in a few curved balls and mix in different musical styles and genres with the metal, usually when you least expect it.
You are getting there - they have about 60 songs and they are all different to each other. You are right, you may not like some of the songs - don't fret just try another song and that may become a favourite ... and maybe go back to the one you didn't like later on. They have a habit of growing on you (but always go for the live version - they are so much better - not over-processed with the vocals being compressed like they do in the studio and live is the only place you will get to hear the Kami Band - the instrumentalists you saw and heard here).
This was a fan made compilation video with clips from a lot of different concerts between about 2012 and 2017. I think the audio (or most of the audio) was from Wembley Arena in 2016.
You like Judas Priest and Rob Halford? How about Rob Halford and BABYMETAL together playing a mash up of 'Painkiller' and 'Breaking the Law' ... it really did happen. It was at an awards show (the APMAs) in 2016 - the audio and camera work are what you might expect from an awards show sadly, but it was the occasion and their collaboration and the mutual respect that mattered.
More recently BABYMETAL have also opened for Judas Priest.
In an interview right after the APMA performance Rob (as you would expect, he is a real gent) could not praise BABYMETAL enough. About 5 years after that Rob said he would love to work with BABYMETAL again, but not on a cover. He wants to record a new song with them - in Japanese.
You should listen to Monochrome which really showcases the lead vocals of Su-metal. There's also a one take piano version that hits me in the feels every time. It's essentially a goodbye tribute to Yui año left the group due to health reasons.

I was the same, someone told me about Babymetal in 2013 and I saw the Gimmee Chocolate video... then I didn't think of Babymetal for 3 years. When I finally took another look, I was hooked, line and sinker. I was off the deep end, addicted. I've gone as far as watching as much as I can about their initial Idol group "Sakura Gakuin". You'll get there....
I like to think that BABYMETAL is the bridge between all genres. Because I remember my nieces were avid pop fans and nothing could change their minds. After watching BABYMETAL, they were able to discover Bring Me The Horizon, Sabaton, Arch Enemy and Rob Zombie. Now they rarely listen to traditional pop but would be more open to different types of music.

You not listen to the good music. You need to listen more of Babymetal to enjoy it. They are one of the best live group you'll see. Listen to "Rondo of nightmares - mischiefs of metal gods intro" or "Road of resistance (live in Japan)" and take the real taste of Babymetal. "Road of resistance" guitar parts has been written by Herman Li himself, big power metal song. And "Rondo of Nightmare" just show you how the band are really really great.
Gimme Chocolate was a hit because it went viral back then but it is also from a time when they were A. still finding themselves and B. still playing live without a band. they're music came from tape most of the time. I would suggest "Akatsuki" live. It's one of my favorites, it highlights Su's voice and the two guitarists hae a great moment too.
let's keep it in mind... babymetal is just about those 3 girls... the band behind or the musician is just supporting band that's why they have their own name, kami band that's the name of the band... if you ever see another babymetal live show video than you'll know the musician are incredibly awesome, they are among of the most reputeable musician in japan, no doubt.. but still they are just session musician for studio recording and for babymetal live show, the musician is not part of babymetal... that' why today they have 2 different line up for the band, the japanese line up musician and the overseas linep up musician

Su was asked in an interview to describe Babymetal in one word, and she replied in Su fashion, "Don't think, feel." Babymetal is fun and joyful. The reason there is a nameless band is when they started out they couldn't afford to tour with musicians, so they did what they could, which was the three girls. One thing the band does is mix Metal with other genres. More than any other band, they explore the boundaries of what metal can be. As Saki of Nemophila says, they are on a different level than the other bands.
My first reaction was to Gimme Chocolate and I was like, WTF? Now I love it. Heaviest song about a game of tag on the playground. They really are just kids.
I absolutly get it. Everybody has an different taste and thats good. If i´ve seen Give me Chocolate first and only, i dont know if i would like Babymetal as i do. Take a time for me to hear more from them but since them, i absolutly love them (and give me choclate too!!)

Give Me Chocolate took me 50+ listen to figure out if I can take it or not.

Catch Me If You Can took me 30+ listen until I watched one YT reactor's face change because of the joy of the lengthy build-up, then I kinda understand what's the fun of that song. However, it had something to do with the sound quality in the reactor's video. The sound quality was just good enough to let me hear the build-up clearly.
I am still confusing about the songs of Babymetal that contains middle eastern elements. I just don't like the tone since forever. However, if it's in the past, I would just skip or switch off immediately whenever I heard it. But, Babymetal let me at least not to skip it and let it played to finish.
However, the rest of Babymetal songs almost put me into a good mood right away, and I love them so much.

This song happens to not be that serious at all, and is self aware - it doesn’t take itself seriously either. It’s about playing hide and seek with a troll (as you may have gathered if you understand enough Japanese)!
I would agree with the comment you mentioned that you have to treat them as a different kind of music from other metal groups and appreciate the performance for what it is - just because it's different from what everyone else is doing doesn't make it inherently bad, nor do they take away from enjoying the other bands too. It just means you've got to be open-minded to, and get used to the differences, such as the choreography and clean vocals. You're right, it's basically a fusion of J-pop idol and metal (and less commonly other genres mixed in too, like Metalizm has dance/electronic/metal with a kind of Arabian/Egyptian sound). Nice to see you're open enough to have given them a third chance!

@@TheAncientMetaler-1963 now that the girls are in their mid twenties they've said that it's time to move away from the Kawaii aspect of their music. They'll still play the old songs on tour but when it comes to new music it will not be Kawaii centric. If possible you should go see them when they come to the states at the end of August. They'll be headlining a tour with Dethklok, and also be playing at metal festivals around the country.

You'll find with their first two albums that it's full blown pedal to the Kawaii metal. Their next two albums are much more experimental in exploring different genres to mix with metal,in particular with a leaning towards prog metal. For me too, my first BABYMETAL song was Gimme Chocolate, and I dismissed them and forgot about them. Much later I came across Road Of Resistance live in Japan, and I've been in the foxhole since.
I still don't like the three gimmicky songs from the first album, another one I'm undecided about, but then there are these other nine awesome songs on that record, instant classics.

This is one of the best reactions I've ever seen and believe me, I've seen a lot. Not because someone likes Babymetal, who didn't like Babymetal before (ok, maybe a little). But the main point is that before I became a Babymetal fan I also had a similar mindset. (at least that's my impression). The head often plays you something in terms of what you "should" like and what is actually the case. Babymetal has completely eliminated this "restriction" and it may sound over the top, but it has made me a more open person not only in the field of music.🤘🦊🔥
This is a good song to get an idea of what Babymetal are/were, cute and heavy. Su-metal's voice in some songs on the latest album is more mature (less cute), which is nice.
I love Babymetal's takes on mixing different genres of music with different styles of metal to create these catchy performances. I always find myself bouncing during the breakdown in this one and suddenly I'm singing the chorus (as best as I can make out).

Baby Metal are the three, then two, now three again singers. The band is session musicians. They are kawaii metal. One thing that boggles my simple mind is the amount of choreography.

GIMME CHOCOLATE is the absolute worst introduction someone can have to BABYMETAL. i am 59, been listening to Judas Priest since 1980, played guitar and bass in metal bands since 82 and after finding them 5 years ago, BABYMETAL has become my favorite band, ever. All the other bands you named are great bands, but they don't hold a candle to BABYMETAL.

Gimme Chocolate the original video with 200m-ish views was one of the first things they ever did, while experimenting with how to mix metal with jpop. The outcome of that video going viral was enough funding to get a band (they used backing tracks) and buy costumes (they borrowed clothes from family/friends), as well as play for more than strip malls and local shows to family and friends.
suggestion: Babymetal - Road of Resistance - Live in Japan (Warning, this is one of a few early performances that can lead to life-long fandom).
The music director who originally thought of the idea for this, thought of it in large part because he saw Su-Metal (the lead singer) perform in other venues. She didn't even know what heavy metal was when they started. There were experiments in how to mesh genres with her as the lead - over a very short period of time it all gelled, they became internationally renowned while the leads were still high school age.
Su-Metal is astounding. I hope you get to go through their early catalog and follow through their growth and music career to see how amazing she is as a metal lead singer.
I can tell she is a fantastic vocalist.
Glad you liked the track - I love this one (and a ridiculous number of their other songs). Most of their songs differ quite a bit. I like most BM (about 80% of their stuff grabbed me immediately) but I wasn't mad on metalism - although I've got more used to it and like parts of it - it kinda feels to me like a bit of a missed opportunity somehow. I still remember the feeling the first time I watched a new BM track and thought it was poor - kinda shocked - I'd watched maybe 30+ songs and everyone of them had me hypnotised till then - but I still feel almost let down when I hear something from them I don't think is quite up to scratch.

We are aware that "Gimme Chocolate" is a very polarizing song on first reactions. It's tailored like that in purpose to get a major WTF reaction.
I'm glad "Catch me if you can" worked well for you unlike "GC" and "METALIZM". Keep in mind these two are MV with studio audio version. I actually experienced both songs performed live in concert irl and they sound very different and way better.
"CMIYC" was my very first BABYMETAL song and it got me hooked from the first moment. Their band (Kami Band) is just amazing.
Some suggestions: "Headbanger" (Live at Legend 1997), "Ijime Dame Zettai" (Live at Sonisphere 2014). Or something newer: "Mirror Mirror".

Great reaction! It sounds to me like you get it. I think the first time a person listens to them, they are listening for what they think they ought to be. Then eventually they start listening to it for what it actually is. That is when the light bulb goes on. You watched Gimme Chocolate, Metalizm, and now CMIYC so you know how much variety there is. There is no defining Babymetal and that is the beauty of it. If you like music to be predictable and check all the right boxes then Babymetal will be annoying. If you want to be surprised and entertained, that is where they shine.
I am guessing that you watched the official Gimme Chocolate music video? That looked like a liver performance, but the audio was the studio recording.

I usually don't watch all the rambling of reactors after they're done with a song (and I usually don't write 3 fucking comments on a single video) but I did this time (and I did this time) and I really appreciate the honesty and the opinion. I REALLY REALLY love some babymetal songs and I REALLY REALLY don'T like some others at all. especially the new album to me is very hit or miss. But I really think there are some geniune gems among their songs and I can't wait to see you discover them now that you got over your initial distaste.

Well done, on average it takes people 3 songs/videos to get Babymetal and like it (many end up liking it). Babymetal is such a contrast of things brought together that it's hard to grasp, you almost need some time to create new brain connections. Yes, if you set out to be close minded it just won't happen, if you can open your mind for a moment it can. Yes, keep it pure. And most of us understand Babymetal isn't for everyone or for everyone on their journey.
Yes, Babymetal is not your regular metal band, but also you said also not your regular J-Pop group either.
They are at the same time the heaviest J-pop group and probably the happiest/upbeat/energetic metal band. And they love blending genres, which is one of the fun things about them. Metalizm is the WTF song of the latest album.
Babymetal exists somewhere in between, sometimes I call them metal fusion band.
The origin of Babymetal is a guy, who used to do all the things a band needs done exist make music. He's now the producer of Babymetal. How did this happen ? In Japan's music industry, just like in the west, popularity of rock and metal had fallen. So the company he works for asked him to work at the kids department, he noticed their is a talented singer and figures out, maybe her loud singing style, would fit the loud metal music he likes. To good for regular J-pop he said. He himself thought it was a crazy idea and obviously the company said: we can't put any effort/money into this, but he found a way in the company he was allowed to do it without the company funding it. With her voice at the center of it all.
I see it as: authentic metal music with little ladies (they are 25, 23 and 20 years old now, but they are still not tall at all, I used to say authentic metal with little girls)
Pretty certain it was Rob Halford that said 'future of metal', but I see his words as: one of the futures of metal, as their are many kinds of metal. And they are one of the bands for the future, because of their age and popularity. When he said it, they are the biggest band of their generation in metal music. Which makes sense, because they were teenagers at the time, what other teenagers in metal are performing in front of 20 000 people arenas (in their home country) ?

Part of what Babymetal was doing is trying to revive other genres back into the public eye, including especially metal of course.

Good reaction. You are missing, I think, only a small detail to understand what you are seeing. Babymetal at the time of Catch me if you can and Gimme chocolate were a children's group, with children's songs for a child audience. However, the quality and the mix is so good that it crossed its target audience and reached the metal audience. In those years it was not strange to find an audience of girls between 10 and 15 years old together with long-haired metalheads... and always coexisting united by the love of the group.
Since these songs, belonging to the BabyMetal album (the singer would be between 15-16 years old and the chorus girls around 13-14) that was published in 2013 or 2014, I'm not entirely sure, they have published 3 more albums. Metal Resistance was published in 2016. An album that without losing the childish essence of its predecessor, began to have a more adolescent than childish sound.
In 2018 they released their third album called Metal Galaxy, which is a fusion album of Metal with other musical forms, being able to find the fusion of metal with hip-hop, with Hindu, electronic, European folk music... even a summer song!
This year they have presented their fourth album called The Other One.
They are currently the most influential heavy group in Japan (I am not saying the best, but the most influential since their idol nature opens doors for them that are closed to others) and the Japanese heavy group that has gone the furthest in history in the West (again I am not saying that the best, because for tastes the colors, I only indicate figures and facts)
There are many songs that you could react to, but for me there is always one that drags everyone who listens to it into the fox hole:

I was totally turned off by Gimme Chocolate, and it was the first song I heard. About three songs later, I was really enjoying myself. But the song that convinced me that they're legit was their prog anthem, Tales of the Destinies. But more importantly, Babymetal was the gateway drug that led me to Nemophila, Lovebites, and Maximum the Hormone. I think your take is pretty spot on.

BABYMETAL started their own genre in 2010 - Kawaii Metal. Now they're in their mid-twenties and the Kawaii is not so much anymore. Still they are unique! A great new album was released earlier this year and it's a bit darker. They've been going on for soon 13 years, fighting hard against metal elitist/purists and haters and they have a huge following...and they've been doing it great! Sometimes I think they're more metal than any other band because they stick to what they do and don't care what anyone else think.
If I started my own genre, it would be called, "You suck! Who let you start a genre!?!?"
I'm not sure if I get you. BABYMETAL are pioneers of what they're doing. No band has ever done anything like this.
