  • In this episode of Tech Effects, we explore the impact of music on the brain and body. From listening to music to performing it, WIRED's Peter Rubin looks at how music can change our moods, why we get the chills, and how it can actually change pathways in our brains.

I'm interested in what playing an instrument in a more casual way does to one's brain. Most of the musicians shown in these types of videos are amazing classically trained musicians who have what I would consider a deep understanding of not only how to play, but how the music works (for example, musicians who are able to get "into the zone" like jazz musicians). But what does this mean for a casual player, like a beginner guitarist, say one like myself who is very early on in my journey and relies mostly on simple chords. Would playing music have the same effect on my brain as someone who could be considered more in tune with what they are doing (someone with a deeper understanding, rather than someone like myself who feels as if they are simply going through simple motions)? Interesting thought.

This is great. Music communicates what words cannot express, in a much better and more articulate way I could ever do it. It's helped me heal after I had to learn how to walk again, I did it to the beat of whatever music I was listening to, and it helped me cope emotionally while going through the process, uncertain what my outcome would be. I can run now...

There are no lyrics in the song so far. But the song appears to be filled with unspoken emotion that doesn't need to be Said. It's expressed. Really interesting effect on the mind.

I have always wondered about this questions since music does not seem to have any specific survival advantage. I am starting to believe that it's just the body's way of making an individual feel happy (because of the dopamine release) inorder for them to have better well being which obviously will lead to them procreating healthier progenies. Music also has been here throughout our evolutionary journey. The singing birds, the rustling leaves, the flowing water, etc remind us of a simpler time & they will continue to do so making us feel better than ever!

This. Vibrations are present in the environment, people, objects, and etc that surround us. And while the effects not only influence our consciousness they also affect our subconscious which can plant seeds for certain behaviors, mannerisms, and ideations.
Music is prevalently vibratious which is why it’s so effective, the words, the lyrics, the frequency it all has a manipulative science behind it.

For everyone who has music rattling around in your head you need to listen to two music Video's on TH-cam that will give you a very very important piece of information. The first TH-cam music video is, 'I Write the Songs' performed by Barry Manilow' and the second is, 'Somebody's Knockin' performed by Terri Gibbs' which will tell you just who is inside your head.

I’ve got a large body Washburn acoustic guitar. When I’m stressed or feeling a little depressed, I lay my ear or press my temple on the top of the guitar and begin playing. Feeling the vibrations through your head and hearing the beautiful tones causes everything to just melt.
