I enjoyed both My Wife and Kids and The Bernie Mac Show. My Wife and Kids seemed like the writers worked to get in as many jokes in per scene, with set ups and one-liners like a usual sitcom. The Bernie Mac Show felt more intricate, with better written characters and a more vivid sense of the whole environment, thanks to the single camera style.
I worked on the show. This is the best synopsis of events I've seen. Larry Wilmore is one of the best humans you would ever meet. He's super intelligent, personable, friendly and talented. When he left the show we were all crushed. They brought on a show runner who was so horrible that it showed in the production. It seemed like he wanted to make the black Brady Bunch. He was fired. The Unit Production Manager kept the network show notes on his door. It seemed like the network wanted everything that was funny removed from the show. The show we shot was much funnier than the show that aired. Bernie's ad libs were hilarious. Rarely seen in the final cut. When the show moved to Friday nights we all knew the network wanted to kill the show. Friday nights is where shows go to die. Bernie threw us a crew party Friday nights with an open bar, catering and fun activities. He called it Friday Bump and Grind... We called it drunk Friday. He appreciated us and took care of his crew. We loved him. From the beginning we talked and said "someday this party is going to end." We were never ready for the inevitable. I have lots of photos if you do another story. Funny that you have one of my still photos in the video with Bernie on Don Rickels. How'd that happen?
Just today I got into season 3 and immediately it felt off for me and after 4 episodes I felt like I wasn’t watching the Bernie Mac show anymore. Everyone felt like caricatures of themselves and plot points became too silly with no soul or lesson behind it,it wasn’t enjoyable. Before It felt like a show about raising kids and learning the boundaries of parenting then it just became a show for kids where seeing Bernie stressed out and make funny faces became the shows punchline. Larry’s absence was felt and the show reflected that.

I could see some cracks in season 2 towards the end but I guess with Larry absent for the whole season I'm really feeling it for season 3. Not sure if I'll finish the series cause I still really enjoy season 1 and most of season 2. Season 3 still has good episodes but the quality is definitely off
Too his credit the show was competing with alot of heavy hitters at the time: My Wife and Kids, King of queens, the office, scrubs, the boondock, ect....i mean that was a great era for sitcoms and at the time Bernie show seemed more casual and had more deeper subtle humor then shows like me my wife and kids. you didnt really have that jester character like a junior or cole brown . Honestly, even for me as a Bernie fan it was yeeeaars before i tarted to appreciate the shows brilliance

Yep, those networks do things like that intentionally and definitely when it comes to a BLACK sitcom that has the whole black family dynamic in a positive and loving relationship. They clearly wanted the show to fail from the start and still found a way with the time slots because they know many of us are hard wired to schedules and we would start to lose Interests. It was a great show and you could just tell that the cast really got along and Bernie Mac was truly pure of heart. He's definitely one of the G.O.A.T's!

I didn't know about the Larry and Bernie feuding but Bernie and Fox yes. Bernie made several appearances on the Howard Stern show and near the end he was very upset about some of the things going on at Fox. Bernie said himself that he didn't even know what day of the week he show was airing. Sometimes he didn't know if they were picked up for another season...
I watched the entire Bernie Mac series on Amazon Prime Video during my Winter Break and I couldn't stop laughing! It was so funny and had great lessons.
They sabotaged his show by continually changing his time slot. They didn’t want another Cosby on their hand. That show was and still is amazing. I watch it on Hulu 🙂

Yes, this is exactly how I remember Fox's shabby treatment of Bernie. The show lost its time slot to that glorified "talent" show "American Idol" . Then they started moving Bernie's show around to the point it was nearly impossible to find. That would kill off ANY sit com and it was done on purpose. I loved the show, just had no idea when it would be on.

I grew up watching The Berie Mac and I'm watching it now laughing just the same. Lol I pulled it up for my son to watch because I want him to look at some good black sitcoms. He likes it but I'm laughing the hardest. Lol It's a shame Fox moved the show around to kill it but 3 years lasting at the time was good. Most shows today don't even make it past 2 weeks.

The only things I didn't like about the Bernie Mac Show was the Catholic school storyline and that they portrayed the kids as crack babies with a cracked out mother even if it may have been true to life for Bernie.
I'm not a fan of that Catholic school storyline myself and I get you on the 2nd one

I don’t understand how our oppressors do the WICKEDEST things to us, don’t spank their kids because they’re messed up in the head on top of that when they do try to physically discipline their kids they go WAY over board and then be confused on why their kids turn out the way that they do SMH
