  • A playthrough of Sega's 1991 license-based platformer for the Sega Genesis, QuackShot Starring Donald Duck.
With the Disney license and many of the same people as worked on the Illusion series on development duty, it shouldn't come as a surprise that QuackShot shares many things with highly regarded Sega Mickey titles.
The graphics are a clear step between Castle of Illusion and World of Illusion, with some impressive use of color and detailed graphics. The stages aren't terribly original (relying on the typical styles seen in any old game - a jungle level, a cave level, an ice level, etc) and I never really liked the fat Donald sprite too much. When I was young I always wondered why Donald had teeth, only later realizing that the white on his bill was a reflection. You can't really deny the quality of them - it all still looks great - it's just a bit uninspired compared to the Mickey games. The music is pretty bouncy, cheery, and provides a nice backdrop, but it would've been awesome to have some digitzed Donald quacks and squawks.
The real thing that differentiates this one from their rodent-inspired brethren is the way the gameplay progresses. I wouldn't go anywhere near as far as to call it a "Metroidvania" title - it's far too simple for that label - but there is a bit of "find the item to overcome the obstacle to reach point B" style action going on. Imagine the structure from the Capcom DuckTales games, though with a slightly heavier emphasis on finding items, and you have a good idea of what to expect. I personally prefer the more linear left-to-right style platformer, but the style here does give the game a longer set of legs than most hop-and-bop games. You do have to get used to the weirdly floaty controls, but it doesn't take too long to adjust, funky though they may feel.
I know there are a lot of people out there that love QuackShot, and I certainly can understand why. It's still a fun, cute, easy Disney title that's a pretty pleasant way to pass an afternoon.

QuackShot is a light-hearted, fun, great looking platformer. As long as you aren't expecting a game of the same caliber as Castle of Illusion, it won't disappoint.

Personally it's my second favorite Disney game on the system after World of Illusion.

What a nostalgia trip! Not the greatest game in the world but it absolutely captivated me as a kid.

This game is pretty good overall but it has a special attachment to me. Although I grew up a fan of the SNES I had a friend who was a Genesis fan and this was the one game that I loved watching him play. And he was decent at it. The times I spent with him as a child in the 1990s were amazing. Those days are gone but I'll never forget the memories. I miss my friend if you hadn't noticed...

Good memories, man. I remember a weekend right after I graduated high school where me and a buddy went to a grocery store at the edge of town that let you do 2 dollar weekend rentals. We each pitched in 10 bucks and got 5 SNES and 5 Genesis games, then stayed at his place out in the middle of nowhere all weekend while his parents were gone gorging on pizza and Arby's (where he worked). I remember wanting to toss Hard Drivin' out the damn window, but Haunting and Desert Strike held our attention a lot longer, as did Phalanx on the SNES. Ahh, the youth we'll never get back.

I unfortunately missed out on this one which is a shame because I love Donald Duck. I even beat Quack Attack for PS2. I would love to see this remastered by Wayforward.

It most likely is an April Fools joke, but it's a nice peek on what a new version of the game could look like.

Can't help noticing Donald doesn't show up in the mirrors in the Dracula level. Clearly Donald is also a vampire.
