They gave her son a heads up in advance so they could look for alternative work and he seemed extremely pleased that it was Cilla who made the decision in the end and relieved that he didn't have to do it. They both came out as winners in the end unlike when Simon Cowell binned Cheryl Cole in such a ruthless, harsh, humiliating way.
It would happen to anyone in such circumstances. The vast majority of TV shows have a shelf life. I'm no fan of hers but at least she didn't seem to go on and on about it for years like that embittered old bearded bastard Noel Edmonds. His "cosmic ordering" bollocks didn't prevent him being given the boot by the BBC. Or perhaps more importantly, assist in his return. As well as his disaster of the Mr Blobby theme park in Morecambe.

So, someone please help me out here. I'm an American and I have no idea who this woman is. She has been an icon in British television for decades, hosting this television show for 18 years? And the show has seen its better days and is heading for cancellation? Are the Show runners wanting to replace the hostess and thereby encouraged her to quit to make their job easier for them? I'm not understanding everything that's going on here... If the hostess is that closely associated with the show, If the show is heading for cancellation, forcing her out seems to be bad form, because she IS the show. If they're thinking she can be replaced easily and the show goes on as before, that seems a bit farfetched.
Cilla Black was a big star in the UK coming to prominence in the early 60s as singer, and also had a very successful TV career. This last programme, Blind Date, was a dreadful concept, yet Cilla, with her remarkable ability to connect with people and generate excitement, was able to make it hugely successful, at least for the early years. She was greatly loved by many, and would be a very difficult act to follow. As you say, Cilla really was the show.

The live episode came halfway through the final series, so she went on to record the remainder and had a short farewell on the last episode with a montage. We never found out what happened to the last people that went on dates - at the time it had been assumed the show would return with a new host.

Not quite. This was the only live show. The series was filmed in two blocks, and this fell between the two filming blocks.

Cilla was class!! She seemed really genuine and normal, like you can imagine meeting her in the street and she would be the same as she was on TV.
I was a kid when she did blind date and i didn’t even know she was a singer! She had a great voice!

My Nan used to tell me about seeing Cilla Black live when she was a singer. Apparently she was absolutely awful and was booed off stage after only a few songs. As she was leaving the stage she launched a tirade of abuse at the kids on the front row. Could never see Cilla the same way after that story. Not a very nice person when facing criticism.
