Thank you for the very informative video. I am an extremely novice woodworker. My husband was excellent and unfortunately, I never learned from him. I have been slowly learning via videos like yours. He was an Army veteran and always thanked other vets by randomly paying for their groceries or gasoline. My husband died in 2015 and I have been following his appreciation to others by doing the same. No matter where I am or what I am doing, if I see someone wearing a veteran hat, shirt, vest, anything; I walk up to them and thank them, pay for meals or groceries. I have heard so many wonderful stories from random people when doing this. I have been trying to learn how to make an American flag with a pallet but have not been very successful. I think that I can actually follow your video and make your flag. I need more flags portrayed around my home and this one will be perfect. Thank you for all you do to teach others. I made two flags thanks to this video. Here’s my feedback. Great call using a 1x10x10. This allowed for the perfect amount of wood leaving 4 extra strips which I picked out any with knots. I took the time and used wood glue bind the individual pieces which worked great but expect to do some sanding and re staining where the glue squeezed out. I also found that using a sharp razor blade to score the stars before carving with my Dremel left very clean lines and sharp tips. Even tho this adds another step I highly recommend doing this. Project is a backdrop for a helmet and jacket holder for the Harley. One is for me and one is a gift. Love it.
get a scraper to clean up the glue vs sanding. If you did a good job with stain you shouldn't need to touch up. The scraper will take the dried glue without hitting wood. This is an amazing tutorial and after making a flag and posting it online I have gotten orders for 24 flags in my first week! After making several I can give the following recommendations: First, it's actually more cost effective where I live (NJ) to buy 1x2x8 boards and cut them to length. The 1x2x8 actually end up being cheaper (8 * $3.21 = $25.68) than 1x10x10 ($26.10) and you save a ton of time by not cutting and ripping boards, not to mention the cleanup. I would even consider getting the 1x2 if they were slightly higher cost, because time is money. I bought (8) 1x10x10 boards a week ago and to setup, cut, sand all the boards and clean everything up took me 3.5 hours. I can cut that time drastically by just having to cut to length and sand. I do not have a stand with a stop setup for my saw but I will be buying one soon. Second, for burning the stars I turn my propane torch all the way down and "kiss" each star. That gives it a nice burn and doesn't bother the wood around it much. As for burning any custom work e.g. name and badge number for "thin X line", I use a wood burning tool I bought a few years ago that works wonders. It fits right in the lines of my cut and will give a nice even burn. I just couldn't justify $40 for a small torch at this point. I agree having the flex shaft is a great investment. It helps with precision and saves cramping in your hand. I bought one off Amazon because I could not find a Dremel brand in stock or online and the blower does not fit on the end, which is unfortunate, but I am dealing with it for now. My son needed some help with his plan to build a flag for his senior project and this was perfect! He's interested in joining the military this summer and he chose the military to represent his senior project and fulfill his graduation requirements. He's done reports & volunteer work and interviews and to complete the project he decided to build a flag but he didn't know where to start. I saw your video and gave it to him. My husband thought it was great too. They went to buy supplies this morning. I wanted to thank you for helping my son to fulfill his graduation requirements and for inspiring patriotism this way! Just finished my first one. This video is awesome and made the project easy enough for a novice like myself. The only hitch I ran into was not having all my boards flush in the union field. Two were raised slightly higher than the others. I didn’t realize that this would be an issue and went ahead with gluing and brad nails. When using the plunge router attachment on my Dremel this unevenness would change the depth of the bit. Other than that it went smoothly. Thanks so much for this!
Thank you for posting this video. I can definitely see a difference in professionalism of yours vs. one of my local builders. Yours is of a higher quality and your satin finish is definitely smoother and of better quality than many that I've seen.
I built flags like this from pallets. 20"x40" sold them for $20. They were a hot item. Then everybody started making them and sales dropped. It was fun making them and adding sayings, or different colors, etc. Make sure to glue between the boards.
I bought a load of clear pine lumber from a lumber yard that was distressed because of water damage. From that , I made 147 Adirondack Chairs on my new Shop Smith. This was a labor of love, I ruined a good thing. I lost interest in wood working, it became a job with little rewards. It was not a money maker, by any stretch of the imagination. If you don't love what you are doing, it's not fun any more. Keep you hobbies a hobby.

John, I saw your video about 3 years ago, and have made so much money on these flags it's unbelievable!!! One thing I did do was bought a steel flag stencil. Just lay it down, and dremel. Saves a ton of time stenciling, then trying to free hand the stars and get crisp lines and points. It was $45, but was well worth it since i've been making so many!! Thanks again

I’ve been kind of intimidated by this project ( before seeing this video) and it is what has gotten me into wood working. The stars have been my main concern as I really want to chisel them out for that added look. Thank you for breaking it down, I will definitely be making this for close friends and myself.
Try using toungue and groove bead board planks. Go to Lowes and on the very back wall in the lumber section you'll find some planks of wood wrapped in shrink wrap. They have full length to 4ft. The planks are only ⅛ inch thick. Very light weight. But it looks great. My wife and I sell them as well. We use the lighter wood for shipping reasons. But they turn out the same as yours.
@@JohnBuildsIt we also use the thicker wood like yours. because some people want the thicker wood because it more durable. so we do sell both. but we make sure we explain the difference and why one is more expensive than the other. we give multiple options of wood thickness on our site. the quality and artwork are all the same though.

This is a superb wood working book I`ve ever read, *TopFineWoodworking. Com* . Both novice and some skilled woodworker can gain a lot of general info using this reading material. I`ve been very amazed how frequently I use this to look up woods at places like to restore and salvage spots.?

Thanks for sharing that, it actually gave me a really good feeling inside. Early America royally fucked up in the treatment of Native Americans. Native Americans have served in the US military since WWI and and are still dedicating their lives to this country.
I can vouch for this. I attended the thundering spirit native dance festival in Florida last year and a big part of the opening ceremony was honoring the Flag and Veterans. Gave me goose bumps when I saw it.

i got a tip for you... ive burned a lot of wood, those small torches on the boards have an uneven flame coverage so its hard to get a good even burn... try using a torch you hook up to a 20lb propane tank, much bigger flame and adjustable heat output too, same principle, travel speed dictates burn, much better coverage
@@anthonyo4038 no you dont, and mapp does burn hotter... also most people have a 20lb tank for a grill, and the torch was like 10 bucks... its 10 times faster, if you batch out 20 flags...youre gonna save a crap ton of time

I headed for the garage to get a few tools, but somewhere along the way I forgot what I was going to do, and so I went to the fridge, got myself a beer and then another, and another... that's about it.

Thank You for a great tutorial. After watching your video I made 4 flags and gave then to neighbors and family who were vets for the 4th of July as a Thank You for their service... they loved them. I really enjoyed making them ( I only changed one thing, I biscuit joined all the strips to get rid of the back braces)
@@lowspeak it's basically a computer controlled router. You choose your design on the computer and it does the work for you. You can look it up on TH-cam.
I've seen guys using a chisel and hammer to carve them out, now that is 'hand made', Dremel is not 100% hand made, you are using a power tool to help speed up the process, it depends how you look at it, in the end, depends on what the customer wants, and how much he wants to spend.

@@akaredcrossbow I can't see Elmo's original comment, but I suspect he didn't like this video because, despite the obviously patriotic intent of this project, the burn marks are technically a violation of the US Flag Code, which, among other prohibitions, states, "The flag should never have placed upon it, nor on any part of it, nor attached to it any mark, insignia, letter, word, figure, design, picture, or drawing of any nature." That said, there are much clearer violations of the Flag Code that happen every day, and few people seem to care about it, like using the flag for advertising purposes, or printing it on clothing and other items. Even otherwise extremely patriotic people not only tolerate, but actively participate in acts that are technically in violation of the Flag Code. I can only surmise that these people are unaware of the Flag Code. But the point is, Elmo (I suspect) objected to this video, not because he hates the United States or its flag, but because he LOVES the US and its flag, and he considers this project an act of disrespect to the flag (albeit unintentional). You can disagree with that (though you would also be disagreeing with the US Flag Code), but I don't think it's fair to call Elmo a "piece of #*@%" or a "hater". That razor blade idea is smart! You could even use a straight edge along all the parallel lines to cut faster.

I bought a load of clear pine lumber from a lumber yard that was distressed because of water damage. From that , I made 147 Adirondack Chairs on my new Shop Smith. This was a labor of love, I ruined a good thing. I lost interest in wood working, it became a job with little rewards. It was not a money maker, by any stretch of the imagination. If you don't love what you are doing, it's not fun any more. Keep you hobbies a hobby.

John, I saw your video about 3 years ago, and have made so much money on these flags it's unbelievable!!!
One thing I did do was bought a steel flag stencil. Just lay it down, and dremel. Saves a ton of time stenciling, then trying to free hand the stars and get crisp lines and points. It was $45, but was well worth it since i've been making so many!! Thanks again
Good idea! I actually eventually started doing the same with my stencil, just taping it down and carving without tracing them all out
3:05 razor blades is an awesome idea, im an experienced woodworker and will have too remember that trick for the future

I’ve been kind of intimidated by this project ( before seeing this video) and it is what has gotten me into wood working. Try using toungue and groove bead board planks. Go to Lowes and on the very back wall in the lumber section you'll find some planks of wood wrapped in shrink wrap. They have full length to 4ft. The planks are only ⅛ inch thick. Very light weight. But it looks great. My wife and I sell them as well. We use the lighter wood for shipping reasons. But they turn out the same as yours.

@@JohnBuildsIt we also use the thicker wood like yours. because some people want the thicker wood because it more durable. so we do sell both. but we make sure we explain the difference and why one is more expensive than the other. we give multiple options of wood thickness on our site. the quality and artwork are all the same though.

Thanks for sharing that, it actually gave me a really good feeling inside. Early America royally fucked up in the treatment of Native Americans. Native Americans have served in the US military since WWI and and are still dedicating their lives to this country.
I can vouch for this. I attended the thundering spirit native dance festival in Florida last year and a big part of the opening ceremony was honoring the Flag and Veterans. Gave me goose bumps when I saw it.

Nice video. Hint: Make the original Betsy Ross style flag. Very popular with folks looking for this sort of decor. Only 13 stars to complete instead of 50. Works very well for me.
i got a tip for you... ive burned a lot of wood, those small torches on the boards have an uneven flame coverage so its hard to get a good even burn... try using a torch you hook up to a 20lb propane tank, much bigger flame and adjustable heat output too, same principle, travel speed dictates burn, much better coverage

I use the yellow MAP gas bottle and has way better heat than propane. You don't need a ridiculous torch set up to a big tank to achieve this.
@@anthonyo4038 no you dont, and mapp does burn hotter... also most people have a 20lb tank for a grill, and the torch was like 10 bucks... its 10 times faster, if you batch out 20 flags...youre gonna save a crap ton of time

Also, the torch we use in our shop is the Bernzomatic TS8000. It uses a trigger for on/off and the trigger locks when not in use.

@@lowspeak it's basically a computer controlled router. You choose your design on the computer and it does the work for you. You can look it up on TH-cam.
I've seen guys using a chisel and hammer to carve them out, now that is 'hand made', Dremel is not 100% hand made, you are using a power tool to help speed up the process, it depends how you look at it, in the end, depends on what the customer wants, and how much he wants to spend.

That said, there are much clearer violations of the Flag Code that happen every day, and few people seem to care about it, like using the flag for advertising purposes, or printing it on clothing and other items. Even otherwise extremely patriotic people not only tolerate, but actively participate in acts that are technically in violation of the Flag Code. I can only surmise that these people are unaware of the Flag Code.
