Nice video! Good to hear you talking about and playing this one. Interesting, an old favorite 32-bit plugin I still use is Evol which was JX3P inspired. Nice filter and could be pretty vibey for a "vintage plugin", lol. 2005.
Sadly, I have missed the stream. JX3P sounds so good. Sequencer while being simple in functionality, can be fun. I have JX3P (with MIDI mod) and recently got System-8 that includes JX3P “plug-out” (ACB modeling). Initial impressions are pretty good (they even modeled chorus noise, but can be adjusted). You certainly can push System-8 to hear some aliasing, but that shouldn’t be much of concern for normal/typical situations. And yes, it has similar character, but it is not sounding 100% the same (and I don’t think analog emulation could be with current technology, - can be good enough though). Also, on real JX3P I can adjust maximum resonance to my liking, which I cannot do on System-8 . 😂 Thank you, Vulture Culture, for this great stream!
I never really cared for the JX-3P around the time of it’s release and although it was in my price range I passed on it. I did not think that it sounded as good as most of the other synths available. Although it was more affordable for me than the 106, I ended up getting a Korg Poly-800 as my first synth.
@@VultureCultureI ended up having a love hate relationship with the 800, selling it some years later, eventually buying an EX-800 and then selling that too. Although I loved the oscillator and envelope architecture the single filter just became too annoying for me. Many years and many synths ago. I still toy with getting another 800 today.
The JX3P is awesome in its simplicity. As usual with Roland, great sounds and reliable. I use the JX3P plugout on my system-8 and on my DAW through Roland Cloud. It's not my main synth but it has it's use for sure. Some of my fav string and synth sounds!
It's really up there for just being easy and fun to program and sounds great. A much cleaner sound than the warm, fuzzy Polysix but similar sort of immediacy
These sounds are quite thick and beautiful i think its a dco synth if i remember right i only had a old lowrey that was a dco i miss it but the keys wouldn’t fix and i couldn’t find the contacts no midi 🤨
I paid $325 for a JX3P last year (Literally met a truck driver/frustrated keyboardist on the side of an exit on i40!) I immediately got on eBay and found a decent priced PG-200 ($350). So happy to have found this synth locally at a great price. In 1984 a JX3P was my very first synth. A few years later I sold the 3P to finance a JX-10... a great synth itself but not a replacement for the 3P.
I don’t have original hardware to compare to but i still really love the sound of the Roland Cloud Jx-3p. Especially after the V2 version came out with the Circuit Mod function to one knob browse through an endless variation of internal tunings, and together with the Condition knob i think it sounds very analog. You can also increase the polyphony to 8, and you can choose between how the layout is with the PG-200 or a different layout with the PG-200 function integrated into the layout making it feel like a traditional synth.
I remember playing one at Goldie’s Music in New Haven when I was a kid and always wanted one but got sucked in by newer gear. I got a Roland System 8 with the JX3P plugout
@@VultureCulture to be honest I was trepidatious about the 49 note keyboard but with the octave button I made it work. My metal head ears cannot tell the difference between these ACB plug outs and the real thing. I can tell the difference between the Zencore and the real thing! Having a Juno 106, Jupiter 8, and JX3P all in one reliable synth is a gigging musician’s dream! Hell, who am I kidding it is a blessing in my studio, I can’t justify the cost of a Jupiter 8! With all the controls on it I don’t need a programmer so that extra piece of gear and expense is not necessary. So now I find it difficult to rationalize buying a JX3P and programmer. Good thing I’m not rational 🤪 THE BIG upside is the SYSTEM 8 sound engine! It was not even considered in my original purchase. It sounds amazing, I tend to use it way more than I thought. I just wanted a synth to prevent me from taking my Juno 106 out of the studio and Bonus it has a nice assortment of effects so no need to bring the multi effects unit!
Presets for the Roland Cloud (System 8) version would be nice. I have heard it is hard to make presets for that version. I have a lot of good sounds on my Cloud version. The Ladies preset is very unusual - sound like ladies singing trippy voices. I like JX-3P strings and pads. If I was richer and had a big place I would have one. I already have too many hardware synths - maybe 20 or more. Yeah a DW-8000, SQ-80, 3rd Wave desktop and X8 Got a copy of your sample pack and D-50 presets. The other day I got a newfangled ModWave desktop and MultiPoly. I have no idea what I am doing. Also have guitars and every pedal. Ha.
I have the jx3p (ACB)on the fantom ex and Roland cloud jx-3p and it doesn’t sound as good as your synth. The jp-8 on the fantom ex sounds so much better than the fantom jx-3p. The jx-3p sounds really good on the stream in stereo on my iPad Mac . If you buy the Roland xp 80 you’ll probably have to replace the capacitors, I have my original xp50 and it needs the capacitor replaced there were issues of soldering workmanship when they came out
OK Scum! Besides the JX3P I bought locally last year I also just found a local Prophet 600 synth for a great price (needs work though). Just wondering - Desert Island... You can only have one synth... The JX3P (with a programmer) or the Prophet 600. Which one is it? And yes, oddly enough this Desert Island has electricity!
My vote is for the JX-3P hands down even though I know the 600 has it beat in terms of features. I just love the sound and the simplicity with the programmer. Sure the 600 has VCO's / two envelopes / filter fm... I just don't love the envelopes and the overall sound to me just doesn't excite me the same way for no clear reason lol
@@VultureCulture They do sound vastly different. If I get the 600 up and running I'm thinking it might grow on me though! But yes, something about the JX3P is just so warm and inviting while still crunchy and harsh when it needs to be. You are correct my friend - people out there bent on finding a Juno 106 need to consider the 3P. Thats how I wound up with my very first synth back in 1984... I saved up all summer, got my final paycheck, went to the music store only to find out that the 106 was back ordered for like 6 months! Then the sales guy says..."Hey, but we just got this other synth in... I haven't even unboxed it yet" - it was the JX3P.... I took it home with me that day!
@@VultureCulture OK then... heres a Scum Smorgasbord...What if - for producing Synth Wave - you had to choose between a Jx3P, a Prophet 600 or a Matrix 6?

So crazy that some plugins are getting up there in age. And they can sound really good sometimes! Sometimes not obviously
Fire!
🔥🔥🔥
Holy Moly that jx3p sounds awesome, the pg2k really brings the best out of it too
The PG-2K is an amazing partner for the JX-3P.
Sadly, I have missed the stream.

I'm surprised with all the circuit mod stuff they didn't add a resonance boost! Seems pretty obvious! I'll have to check out the JX3P plugin soon

I love the Poly 800 too, but for me the JX series is where it's at.

That Roland JX-3p sounds so good. Don’t ever sell that. I just might have to buy one in the future. Thank you Alex! Your channel is Awesome!❤️
I really appreciate it! I will either sell this or the JX-10 in the future, I can't justify having both longterm
I love the resonance of this filter. Creepy, ominous, its awesome. Very 80s cyberpunk. A Detroit classic for sure.
Couldn't agree more!
@ Haha, left a comment on K4 video about my mm16 experience

I'm not skilled enough to fix the keys myself (yet) so I always factor repairs like that into the price I'm willing to pay
This jx3p ends up on Craigslist from time to time im tempted every time sometimes the keys are the thing broken but they can be fixed

One more benefit over Juno-106 - ICs not failing.
