Fantastic song, Frida’s vocals and persona are just angelic. I enjoyed your analysis Matt. I’ve seen many other reactions to this song. One I really enjoyed was by Produce At Home. He stated that the drop in to the chorus is one of if not the best drop he’d ever heard. Thanks Matt, 👍
Love the fact that you listen to the instrumentals and vocals. This is in my top 5 of their singles, they did a great job on this album only a year after Voulez-Vouz, very different feel , I played the album so many times, I don't know how my parents coped, but my siblings were not complaining, they were into it and their and my friends as well, it was a wonderful time in my life. I want to mention that some album tracks that was not singles were played on radio that's how popular they were example the songs Move On,I Wonder and others.
"Super Trouper" is what the stage spotlights were called...it's about a performer (Bjorn? Agnetha?) who is drained by the business ("facing twenty-thousand of your friends, how can anyone be so lonely?") and is held together by the new love who will be in the crowd tonight. It's autobiographical as it expresses what the band members were actually feeling at the time, with their personal relationships changing. Sung beautifully by Frida on lead vocal, and featuring that sweet and melancholy musical bridge, by one of the best composers of our time, Benny Andersson.
When I first started watching music reactions on TH-cam, I couldn't figure out what itch I was scratching. It was during lockdowns and maybe I just needed to feel connected to people over music. Since then I've watched people react to all kinds of stuff from my 80s and 90s youth, the stuff that's not been too obscured by time passages anyway. And I keep coming back to ABBA, time after time-- and you've become my favorite reaction channel. I feel like you "get" my music, from a sociocultural and musical angle. When you dig something, it feels validating. I'm excited to, yes by several degrees of removal!, but "share" this album with you and your viewers, if that makes sense.
Seriously, that means a lot, Delius, so massive thanks for letting me know. And fair to say, it's been such a rewarding experience on this end too, as I'm learning about groups I wasn't familiar with before with the assistance, understanding, and encouragement of longtime fans of these artists. It just makes the experience of discovering music even more enjoyable, and my channel now feels like a daily hang-out for some of the coolest people I've met. Heck, even when I react to bands and tracks I've known a long time, I've learned even more about them through others who share those interests. So bottom line, thank you so much for being part of it, and lots more ABBA to talk about. :)
It's about the loneliness of fame and being a performer, how unreal it is compared to the love for the person she is longing to see. It's a bright , happy tune but there is a troubled heart at it's centre. This album does have some darker lyrical themes, or more adult shall we say. It's not my favourite Abba album , but my second favourite. It was the last Abba album I received or bought while in my teens. I got it and Adam and the Ants "Kings of the Wild Frontier" for my birthday - Adam won repeat listens and while I really liked Super Trouper, I was aware that my musical tastes were changing. It was later when I went back to it after having lived some life that I really started to appreciate it.
"Super Trouper" a pop rock/discoish anthem - probably ABBA’s catchiest song (great bass). Top 5 song in at least 11 countries - #1 in 8 of those. Reached #1 on US Billboard's Dance Club Songs in 1981 (only #45 on the Hot 100). ABBA's 9th and final #1 in the UK (their 2nd biggest-selling song after Dancing Queen). Placed ABBA 4th for the most UK chart-toppers (behind The Beatles, Elvis Presley and Cliff Richard). Position kept for 20 years until Madonna 10th UK #1 in 2000. ✌
You wait - you're in for the treat of a decade next - The Winner Takes It All - some say the best melodic and lyric union from Benny and Bjorn - but it's that, AND the performance from the girls too - enjoy!
When I listen to the lyrics, I get goosebumps every time. This is the era in which the songwriting doesn’t hold back and the personal experiences and relations by the band members creep into the lyrics. Just wait until you get to the next one… another all-time masterpiece! And even more goosebumps.
Released in November 1980, it has a Christmas feel to it, especially when you see the music video. ABBA is in fact always extra popular during the Christmas holidays, when many European channels play ABBA specials. There's a certain warmth to their music that resonates with all generations, and IMO no other album evokes that feeling more than Super Trouper.
This was the first album recorded entirely at their brand new recording studios , they bought the whole building and it was at the time the most technologically advanced one in the world . They wanted a place where they could work the time they wanted on an album of course being that good , when they didn’t use it they rented it . Led Zeppelin recorded there , Paul MC cartney , Phil Collins, Adam Ant (‘there is a song where frida participated with him ) during the active ABBA era, Backstreet Boys or Britney Spears also used it years after to mention a few . The lyrics talk basically of an artist being at the spotlight nevertheless feeling alone although there’s a crowd wild for her the only thing that keeps her alive is her loving one there in the crowd although she cannot see him because of the lights
Great reaction..... Just a fun fact..... "Super Trooper" is the name given to the biggest spotlight in a concert or theater...... So it is why the spotlights are so emphasized in the video. Thanks again for your efforts here.

Super trouper was the very last track recorded for the album. It replaced Put On Your White Sombrero which would not be released till a decade or two later as an unreleased track and then become a bonus extra on Super Trouper re-releases. Super Trouper hit the stores at the beginning of the eighties right around the same time of John Lennon's death. With the Super Trouper album you get much more of the synth sounds that dominated the eighties and the nineties. @@christianoazzuro6711 The Album is my first preference, all tracks work for me. The visitors is joint 2nd with the 'ABBA' LP. I think this is because they all represent distinct periods in their sound evolution. Having said that, it does not mean these 3 albums have all the best single hits.
@@geordieboy8945 I agree, "The Album" is my favourite too. I think "Super Trouper" the album ends weakly. Lay All Your Love On Me, like Gimme Gimme Gimme, should've been a stand alone single (with the Way Old Friends Do on the B-Side) and the album should've finished with a couple of stronger tracks. But hey, who are we to say over 40 years later 😆
Completely agree with the poster you refer to at the beginning. The album Super Trouper is the culmination of everything ABBA to that point. An enormously successful album. But also an ending. The change of direction of their following album The Vistors saw a decline of response. Still a big album that showed ABBA could take risks, but not anywhere near the global success of Super Trouper. But what else could ABBA do ? They had to evolve. To mature. Super Trouper was the perfect blend of sophisticated pop with very adult themes. Probably gave them the confidence to do The Visitors and the subsequent beautiful The Day Before You Came. Just that the fans weren't as overwhelmingly ready.
Love Voulez-Vous album - but it only gets better from thereon i.e. Super Trouper and The Visitors . . . and I hope you see it through the perfection that is CHESS and Kristina to Voyage :)
I think I still have my original copy of this LP with, on the bottom right corner, an offer to win a free Saab car. Memories can be quite random sometimes.
I think that hardly anybody remembers that Benny from ABBA with his ol' group made some covers on the popular songs from the USSR - th-cam.com/video/9P2nFag4BLw/w-d-xo.html original soviet version - th-cam.com/video/paxlqGUxffw/w-d-xo.html Funny, Isn't it?

@@darrenbertram7289 There's always something good for everyone in Abba's music box ,that's for sure.I think No one could be left dissapointed.
Super trouper is the big spotlight they use on stages that you see in the video.
Me too :)
Yes you commented on the trooper (army) rather than super trouper (big stage light)
Ha, yes, but people explained the meaning after the reaction, so I've got the concept now. :)
I find it seriously wierd that they named a song and an album after a brand name.
