It's because he was trying to cover the intake/carburetors so no one could see the configuration since they were closely-guarded Pro Stock secrets so he put (I believe) his gloves over the top to block visibility.
Yeah, I can agree with you on that. They walked away with no injuries for those drivers, but talk about a big bang against the railings and fences for the boys.
I miss these vidoes. The new, young guns should watch these and listen and realize the lack of today's safety gear these race vehicles had. And little or no computer management on them as well - way before Facebook's plans for world domination.
