  • Short snippet of show finale “You Should Be Dancing” Thursday 10th March 2022. Rich Winsor stars as Tony Manero with Olivia Fines as Stephanie, both brilliant, with an outstanding supporting cast.

That guy in the white suit needs to go on a diet and get a pompadour. Travolta is pretty indelible as Tony Manero. He kinda defines "Saturday Night Fever." If you're going to be risky enough to take on that movie, then you need to get yourself a skinny, top-notch, boy dancer who can sing and act. Otherwise you ain't got much of a show. New York producers opened last Spring the first ever Broadway revival of "Funny Girl." That's a double whammy; you had a hit Broadway musical whose Iconic star won a Tony Award, and then a hit Movie musical whose Iconic star got an Oscar

The Broadway revival producers apparently didn't see either of those two earlier events. If you think John Travolta was a tough act to follow, try doing Fanny Brice without a triple-threat actress who can act, be funny, roller skate, and "blow your sox to the wall" sing. Our Producers apparently spent more time picking a Costumer and Scenic Designer than they did picking a Fanny Brice. Without a good Fanny, you ain't got much of a show. Why were they so surprised that the reviewers were so lukewarm? Without socko praise and a dynamic Fanny Brice, folks, there aint no hit. As luck would have it, their predicament got adjusted when deus ex machina intervened. Hey guys, what about that actress with the fantastic voice, who has been in Broadway musicals since she was a kid, and spent five years on TV auditioning every chance she could for the role of Funny Girl. Maybe you could talk her into perhaps taking over the mis-cast role of Fanny Brice. It's worth a try......she might say yes!

Why would you expect good dancing in a show about good dancing? Who are these producers? Did they see the movie? Do they not realize this silly little story about Brooklyn, New York became the zeitgeist of an era. Sorta iconic, you could say. It embraced a certain time, a certain cohort, not-priviledged kids making the most of their lives.

This reminds me of the coming-of-age classic of my generation, a different show about good dancing, a show about 20 talented applicants vying for 10 jobs. Boomers who achieved the dream of a good education, who are now showing up for good jobs, at a time when there weren't enough good jobs to be had. That show had no plot, not much scenery, one costume change. What the show about dancing did have, to go along with it's theme, was fantastic music for 20 dancers, just trying to get on with their lives. "A Chorus Line" revitalized a dying Broadway, won a Pulitzer Prize, sold out for 7 years. And it had top notch Broadway chorus kids telling their own stories. A show about good dancing featured good dancers. "Saturday Night Fever" was a variation of that theme. How could you do a show about dancing without having good dancers?

The man who plays Tony Manero in this production is one of the leading dancers in Matthew Bourne's dance company. Have a look at MB's Swan Lake. He is brilliant as The Swan/The Stranger/ His name is Richard Winsor.
