Hilarious! A mind-bending film.🤣Satire at its best! A masterpiece. This caught me en-guarde. Jim Broadbent`s performance is outstanding.♥ First his brother, then his wife, and when it came to his children I bursted out laughing. Thank you very much for sharing this gem.♥
Back again to remind myself, as I have just recommended it. I did recognise Jim Broadbent, early on, first viewing, but really thought I was going to watch a doco on a family seat. I just shrugged and thought, "This chap looks like Jim Broadbent." Slightly surprised. And at first, everything happened as I expected, then the odd desire to discuss family weaknesses, then the first gobsmacking statement... Just a brilliant job, all round.
Oh Fidel! I have searched for this for 15 - 20ish years! I typed in Jim Broadbent mad old lord film, as I had forgotten the name. I had just recommended it in the comments under a Fry and Laurie sketch, implying Fry, an old aristo, rogers local virgins, but only due to a commitment to tradition. I said Jim Broadbent's was an extraordinary step up, if not exactly funny. I cannot believe you have it! So excited! I remember the first time I watched. Oh. Nice old lord, going to walk us around the garden, tell the history. Then my jaw dropped, and dropped, and dropped and I grinned and clapped in joy, at the end... Which sounds SO wrong!!!
If anyone wants to own a copy of this short movie, it can be found in the special features on the Criterion Collection's BluRay release of the movie "Topsy Turvy", also by Mike Leigh and starring Jim Broadbent.
"Downton Abbey" fans should easily recognize Highclere Castle. This film had us going until the part where he drowned his wife and kids. Then we realized that this was satire on the British ruling class.
They aired this on PBS in 1999 as part of a program that showed indie films and shorts...I thought it was real & was high out of my mind so too lazy to get up and change it...it went on and i'm just like wtf am i watching? By the end I was horrified and was like someone go arrest this guy
You have made me giggle. My jaw kept dropping, but I realised it WAS fiction, and just felt joy at the straight play. Not a hint it was fiction. Utterly brilliant. I clapped in joy at the end, which seems so wrong! I did have a copy. I used to play it without warning, to friends.
Unaware of this Short Film until it was recommended in ST newspaper Culture section this Weekend, marvellous writing / performance by Jim Broadbent Highly recommend
Brilliant subtle pitch black satire on par with How to Get Ahead in Business and Peter O'Toole's Ruling Class. Stellar writing and performance from Jim B!! Other works by Mike Keigh .... en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mike_Leigh#Political_activism
The genius of Jim Broadbent and Mike Leigh - priceless satire of class
Hilarious!

Been looking for this for ages, thanks!
Same here. I could not believe it came up. I had tried without hope.
I am ecstatic! I have hunted for a copy well over 15 years. I lost mine.
A wonderful piece of acting.
Love this movie!! I feel myself frozen when I see him in that lake, with the fog going out from his mouth and the thin ice surrounding him!!

That's exactly where I saw it too ! I'm still not quite sure what to make of it ...certainly unusual !
I saw it in the extras for the Blu-Ray edition of Topsy-Turvy.
i want to memorize this whole thing
So do I ❣
Only Mike Leigh could pull this off. Sad as it is funny
It was satire but since it could be seen around the globe translated it was thought to be true and had reportedly raised alarms
"......That he was a homosexual" 😂😂😂
"No, Mr. Leigh! The OBE is all you'll get"
Bookmarked to enjoy later: 8:28
Ahahahah!! "I don't knooooooooww"
sad story
It looks as if this man has eyebrows growing on his cheeks
My thoughts exactly. LOL🤣
