Hello, There are no straight refresher course in Canada. If you are internationally educated, there are only 2 options on how to work as an MLT in Canada. 1. Get assessed by CSMLS. - This is the only institution that assess internationally trained MLTs. If you are deemed eligible to challenge their national exam and successfully pass it, you can work as an MLT in Canada. Further, this process is tedious and hassle that I recommend you fully understand the process before diving in the first step. This pathway doesn’t necessarily guarantee that you can work as an MLT in Canada though you successfully pass the certification. For an elaborated information about this, you may visit csmls.org. 2. Repeat the entire course in a Canadian facility. -Like any other institution, being Canadian trained is more recommendable since this offers higher chances of working as an MLT in Canada. Hello, The cost will actually vary from one institution to another but upon canvassing, least that I found will cost you 18k CAD per year/15k USD per year. Hi! I was about to apply for the PLA last year but I have read that I won't proceed if I have little or no experience in Microbiology, Blood banking and Histopothology. I am currently working in a secondary laboratory here in Tha PH, I was wondering if my experience from my internship is already sufficient as an experience to the said sections. Hello. No experience candidates can be qualified to challenge the exam if you are a fresh graduate. Experience is required when you are not a fresh graduate. I knew someone with 1 year experience in a secondary hospital, no ascpi certification, just a rmt in the Ph and she got qualified to challenge the national exam. Yet, assessments vary from one person to another.
Hello again, Sorry. I didn’t quite read the question well but I started applications 3 months after boards in the Ph. Finished all the requirements in a month after application and fully assessed after 4 months. From application to finally getting the exam and passing, I say it took us 2 years. Hello, I was a fresh graduate with no experience when I applied so I don't have a work experience reference letter. As of clinical education/ practical internship official letters, I just directly went to meet the Dean of my department and asked for specific documents requested by CSMLS. These specific documents with specific guidelines and instructions given directly by CSMLS can be found through csmls.org and may be printed to directly be presented and followed by the person with the authority to complete it. Hello, Ascpi is for USA. Csmls is strictly for Canada. You will still need to follow the process since they don’t honor Ascpi. Yet you can try applying for US-based laboratory in Canada with Ascpi credential but these labs are only limited, may 1 per province. Hello, For WES to assess you, you must have finished the degree. CSMLS will allow fresh graduates(up to 12 months from the date of graduation) to apply for PLA, be assessed automatically and to be give the chance to challenge the exam. Hello, When applying for WES, ask your educational institution to write a letter proving that the University had used English language throughout your study. This will then be assessed by WES. Hello again, You can apply for PLA without experience if you are a fresh graduate( 12 months after graduation date). However, with or without experience and getting certified by CSMLS with the fact that you are internationally educated may make it harder for you to get a job in Canada since they prioritize Canadian trained graduates. As for my status, I was a returning resident of Canada who just completed a degree in the Philippines. It’s very recommendable to just get a course and study in Canada since they will always prioritize graduates educated through their system. Hello, 3 months is long enough to process all your documents. It’s very recommendable to complete all your documents before coming back home to Canada. It’s less hassle that way. CSMLS assessment may take longer depending on your results. I completed all requirements in a month. They assessed mine for 4 months. I was lacking some of their standards so they required me to go back to school. In my case from step 1 to getting licensed it took me 2 years and 7 months. They’re more referring to equivalency of standards from my international background. Hello, You may take either MLA or MLT if it’s only Phlebotomist. If you are Canadian trained, they can immediately hire you without MLA certification yet Most medical facility recommends certification to prove you can legally work and won’t be held liable when an unexpected inspection comes around. Hello, I applied for WES Canada by 2018. Back then I guess I paid less 200 dollars for WES assessment (out from the official document expenses from institution to WES). I was a returning resident. I was only an international student in the PH. Goodluck. ❤
Express entry is a pathway when qualified gets you a permanent residency even without challenging the PLA. Provincial nominee program takes longer than the express entry. Whichever, this is something I am not very familiar of esp. on the processing and cannot give you a specific answer since you will have to decide which is better for you. Furthermore, you may visit the canadian immigration website for better answers. (cic.gc.ca)

Hello again, CSMLS have a pattern on how to do PLA. Such that, CSMLS will refuse any documents without an identifying CSMLS number. First, you need to complete the OSA before applying so they can issue you a CSMLS number. Then you can proceed on the next documents. As of my knowledge, Canada will only credit CSMLS certified candidates, either internationally or Canadian schooled, to practice as an MLT in Canada so no specific pathway actually matters as long as you get certified. i want to apply to michener institute in Toronto and they only required high school transcripts. If you enroll in undergrad studies, they wanna see it too, but my undergrad grades were kinda bad, yet still makes the cut-off for Michener admissions. my high school transcript is excellent though. If i do well in the casper/interview portion of admissions, do you think i'd have a chance? ik mlt is very competitive here, and I'm solely relying on doing well with interview/casper portion, just i don't know if that will be enough to make it.

There are three circumstances for these: Med Lab Technician A. Canadian resident, Canadian trained: There are levels of MLA that doesn't require a certification such that you have finished a Canadian platform. B. Canadian resident, Internationally educated: You need to be assessed by official certifying institutions like CSMLS. (Certification is a way to work legitimately) C. Non-residents, Internationally educated: Under CSMLS, you are not eligible for an MLA exam. (Other institutions for MLA might)

There are no straight refresher course in Canada. If you are internationally educated, there are only 2 options on how to work as an MLT in Canada.
1. Get assessed by CSMLS.
- This is the only institution that assess internationally trained MLTs. If you are deemed eligible to challenge their national exam and successfully pass it, you can work as an MLT in Canada. Further, this process is tedious and hassle that I recommend you fully understand the process before diving in the first step. This pathway doesn’t necessarily guarantee that you can work as an MLT in Canada though you successfully pass the certification. For an elaborated information about this, you may visit csmls.org.
2. Repeat the entire course in a Canadian facility.
-Like any other institution, being Canadian trained is more recommendable since this offers higher chances of working as an MLT in Canada.

Hi! I was about to apply for the PLA last year but I have read that I won't proceed if I have little or no experience in Microbiology, Blood banking and Histopothology. I am currently working in a secondary laboratory here in Tha PH, I was wondering if my experience from my internship is already sufficient as an experience to the said sections. Hello. No experience candidates can be qualified to challenge the exam if you are a fresh graduate. Experience is required when you are not a fresh graduate. I knew someone with 1 year experience in a secondary hospital, no ascpi certification, just a rmt in the Ph and she got qualified to challenge the national exam. Yet, assessments vary from one person to another.
I have no hospital experience when I applied btw. 😊

Sorry. I didn’t quite read the question well but I started applications 3 months after boards in the Ph. Finished all the requirements in a month after application and fully assessed after 4 months.
From application to finally getting the exam and passing, I say it took us 2 years. Assessments vary from one individual to another though.

I was a fresh graduate with no experience when I applied so I don't have a work experience reference letter.
As of clinical education/ practical internship official letters, I just directly went to meet the Dean of my department and asked for specific documents requested by CSMLS.
These specific documents with specific guidelines and instructions given directly by CSMLS can be found through csmls.org and may be printed to directly be presented and followed by the person with the authority to complete it. A specific guideline for a work experience letter can also be found on the same website.

Ascpi is for USA. Csmls is strictly for Canada. You will still need to follow the process since they don’t honor Ascpi. Yet you can try applying for US-based laboratory in Canada with Ascpi credential but these labs are only limited, may 1 per province. Chances are still not guaranteed even you have a Csmls credential and much lesser with Ascpi.

For WES to assess you, you must have finished the degree.
CSMLS will allow fresh graduates(up to 12 months from the date of graduation) to apply for PLA, be assessed automatically and to be give the chance to challenge the exam. If you are applying post annual from the date of graduation, a work experience will be required.

You can still try being assessed by CSMLS since they will always have the final decision as per eligibility. Experiences are extra credits, as from my perspective.

When applying for WES, ask your educational institution to write a letter proving that the University had used English language throughout your study. This will then be assessed by WES.
If WES credits your English language during University, CSMLS won't require you take IELTs. Otherwise, You will need IELTs.

You can apply for PLA without experience if you are a fresh graduate( 12 months after graduation date).
However, with or without experience and getting certified by CSMLS with the fact that you are internationally educated may make it harder for you to get a job in Canada since they prioritize Canadian trained graduates.
As for my status, I was a returning resident of Canada who just completed a degree in the Philippines.
It’s very recommendable to just get a course and study in Canada since they will always prioritize graduates educated through their system. (This is just to get you out from the hassles of spending more but PLA is also an option.)

As long as you can present a detailed educational background requested from your institution sent directly to CSMLS,they will then assess it and give you the results if you are eligible to challenge the exam in Canada. There will be two stages for the minimum requirement for Language Proficiency Testing.
1. Technical Report for IELTS completed by the assessment
team.
A1. Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking requires a 5.5
score or at least 61-79 in rating.
2. Equivalent and Eligible to Exam for IELTS
A2. Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking requires a 7.0
rating.

If you intend to enter and study in Canada, you need the IELTS.
If you intend to only go through the PLA process, with correct conduction of guidelines, may be reconsidered not to take IELTS.
If already assessed by WES, the decision will be left through CSMLS panel.

3 months is long enough to process all your documents. It’s very recommendable to complete all your documents before coming back home to Canada. It’s less hassle that way.
CSMLS assessment may take longer depending on your results.
I completed all requirements in a month.
They assessed mine for 4 months.
I was lacking some of their standards so they required me to go back to school.
In my case from step 1 to getting licensed it took me 2 years and 7 months.
I recommend you read the entire guideline before deciding if you should take Csmls. You may get the elaborated guidelines at csmls.org.

It’s good that you have read it. It’s not the documents that was lacking. It’s my eligibility to challenge the exam. They’re more referring to equivalency of standards from my international background. Thus when seen I was lacking some in one subject, they required me to finish a course that would fit their standards for that subject.

You may take either MLA or MLT if it’s only Phlebotomist. If you are Canadian trained, they can immediately hire you without MLA certification yet Most medical facility recommends certification to prove you can legally work and won’t be held liable when an unexpected inspection comes around.
Further, you can’t challenge MLA though if you are a non-resident of Canada.

The ASCPi credential can be used to help you with the PLA assessment but it will not be valid if you will use it to work in a laboratory, with only exempt if it was a US-based laboratory in Canada.
Thus, ASCPi is only for US and CSMLS is for Canada.

A bachelor degree taken in an institution of Canada will offer you more chances or a guaranteed work as a medical laboratory technologist in Canada so your decision is quiet correct I suppose. It is still good to finish that diploma in India too so you can have both diplomas and work both countries. You are just on the right track my friend.

Since you will have to request WES to forward credentials to CSMLS, it will be the under grad subjects that will be credited since you will be challenging for MLT position and not only for a specific work area such on a masteral.
You can visit wes.org for more detailed specifications needed for processing and csmls.org for detailed instructions to be followed.

I applied for WES Canada by 2018. Back then I guess I paid less 200 dollars for WES assessment (out from the official document expenses from institution to WES).
I was a returning resident. I was only an international student in the PH.

Express entry is a pathway when qualified gets you a permanent residency even without challenging the PLA.
Provincial nominee program takes longer than the express entry.
Whichever, this is something I am not very familiar of esp. on the processing and cannot give you a specific answer since you will have to decide which is better for you.
Furthermore, you may visit the canadian immigration website for better answers. (cic.gc.ca)

-Will be accepted if the person applying is a fresh graduate. (12 months latter from the date of graduation.

CSMLS have a pattern on how to do PLA.
Such that, CSMLS will refuse any documents without an identifying CSMLS number.
First, you need to complete the OSA before applying so they can issue you a CSMLS number. Then you can proceed on the next documents.
You can watch my video parts 1 and 2 to get an idea on what to do first.

I took ASCPi before applying for PLA but I have a friend who didn't take it and was qualified for the exam. My friend took IELTS. CSMLS didn't require me to. I think assessment will vary from one individual to another.

I was a returning citizen who was only internationally educated in the Philippines.
As of my knowledge, Canada will only credit CSMLS certified candidates, either internationally or Canadian schooled, to practice as an MLT in Canada so no specific pathway actually matters as long as you get certified.

i want to apply to michener institute in Toronto and they only required high school transcripts. If you enroll in undergrad studies, they wanna see it too, but my undergrad grades were kinda bad, yet still makes the cut-off for Michener admissions. my high school transcript is excellent though. If i do well in the casper/interview portion of admissions, do you think i'd have a chance? ik mlt is very competitive here, and I'm solely relying on doing well with interview/casper portion, just i don't know if that will be enough to make it.

There are three circumstances for these: Med Lab Technician
A. Canadian resident, Canadian trained: There are levels of MLA that doesn't require a certification such that you have finished a Canadian platform.
B. Canadian resident, Internationally educated: You need to be assessed by official certifying institutions like CSMLS. (Certification is a way to work legitimately)
C. Non-residents, Internationally educated: Under CSMLS, you are not eligible for an MLA exam. (Other institutions for MLA might)
