I have lived in Spain for over 32yrs and it's at its worst it's ever been, too many international private buyers buying up cheap properties and renting out for extortionate prices, locals can't afford to rent on the coast where they work for tourist... Prices have increased 4 fold and locals can only just afford to rent a room for themselves it's terrible, locals are fed up with tourist taking all the properties, anyone who rents in Spain and doesn't have a license will be fined very heavily and the owner will not have access to their property for a min of 3 yrs, accomadation for locals is a very big problem, properties used to be approx 500 a month, now these investors are charging anything from 1500 to 2500 a month, it's got completely out of control.

Not the fault of tourists it's the fault of your corrupt government and local officials. We should boycott Spain and see it become the sh*thole it once was. Nobody is calling for tourism to end and all foreigners to stay at home. They're saying the numbers are so crazy, and largely driven by Airbnb owners, that it's affecting average rents and property prices, with far fewer available to the local population, and heavily impacting roads and infrastructure. I'm a Brit living in Tenerife and I have to say I completely get their argument, mass tourism has expanded far beyond 'tourist zones' in the south in recent years, and is ruining so many local villages and towns and the Canarian way of life. Meanwhile, local workers just can't afford to rent as they've tripled - quadrupled in some places - in a few short years

The government is sorting it, but it's not enough, Mallorca have said that if someone buys a property it must be for them to live in and can't be used for tourism, canary will probably be the same as too many purchase and only rent to tourists, the locals are finding it really hard to find a home to live in... First off, these protests should be directed at the local governments for allowing building permissions to take place in protected areas. Secondly, restrict the number of flights/cruises coming into the country. Thirdly, don't host any big concerts and famous events that bring in the tourism. It's absolutely disgusting that these organisations (which I'm not saying they are completely wrong) focus on one side of the problem and target only one group, yet we all know that Spain is filling their country (and their islands) up with illegal immigrants and yet it is the tourists that contribute to their economy that they are protesting about? As always there are solutions for these kinds of problems however it is always those who are innocent that get the blame. Another thing...we all know that tax is theft yet when it suits it is used as a weapon for their discontent. No one should be paying taxes for their properties and if they make a profit from what they have acquired. Humanity need to make their minds up of what they want.

Agreed, however, I believe their concern is more centred on striking a balance. In all honesty, the over subscription of tourism has left locals in the negative more than anything. Day to day living including water supply has been disrupted because resources just can't cope. I do believe with the govt suggestions to promote other less visited areas might reduce the pressure without losing the benefits of tourism as a whole. They have also talked about taxes not funnelling down into state coffers because of use of air bnb and the likes meaning all in all what's being made (by the govt) realistically isn't what we think despite the influx. Even locally, its been seen how a sudden surge in population can have disruptive impacts on public services so the same applies across the world. Adjustments are needed.

Warmer weather plus the original infrastructure of affordable hotels that used to exist in the UK after the war until the mid 80's has all but disappeared - councils allowing once majestic British seaside towns to become run down and rife with crime, and the very real fact that the British pound used to get you almost 2 Peseta's, before the price fixing bullshit of the Euro Zone, essentially doubling your buying power meant UK seasides just couldn't compete, and the few places left like Cornwall and Lake District etc got greedy and pushed prices out of the range of the working class, but Spain WAS affordable thanks to cheap flights from Freddie Laker. It costs more to Fly to Scotland than Italy, and TRIPLE that cost to use a train!
