Hey I'm going to try to break it down for you because I'm on lock down and I have nothing better to do. First, I studied stepping over 20 years ago. I would take my Camcorder (LOL) and go to the steppers set not to dance but to film people and go home and study them. I went to Donnie's and Dre's (Chicago) classes and this is what I found out.....The dance revolves around the step pattern.. It's basically step/or kick with the left foot, step/or kick with the right foot then crossing your left leg over to the right side and then crossing your right leg over to the left side. Some instructors teach their students to step forward and then backward to replace the leg crossing but the count of the beat would be the same. The problem and the big difference with the count is that this same basic pattern is counted differently by different people. There are really 8 actual steps in the step pattern. 2 of those steps are actually little bitty stutter steps. In the 8 count, all of the actual steps are counted. In the 6 count, the stutter steps are not counted. Your feet are moving but the move is skipped in the count. Another problem is that different instructors start their count at different times of the pattern. The kick/kick part is called the shuffle. Some people start their count then. Some people start their count at the first cross. In the 8 count some instructors count the shuffle as 7-8. In the 6 count , some instructors use the shuffle as 5-6. I learned with the 6 count where the kick/kick was the 1-2, the first cross to the right was 3 and the cross to the left was 5. When I saw people counting 8 and on a different count sequence, it sounded weird but we were actually doing the same thing. 6 or 8, I could dance with anybody but I couldn't count their count. LOL Sometimes the people who count 8 are a split second behind the people who count 6. I just slow down a hair and we're in sync. All step songs have a beat. In the 6 count, if you were to clap or snap your fingers to that beat you would be clapping/ snapping a straight 6 count. If you were to clap the 8 count, you would see that you would have to clap that stutter step. Try it and see. I have taught many people (girlfriends LOL) to dance over the years. But when I was learning, I got heel spurs from practicing so much. Watch some of these videos and see if you can tell the difference. I hope this helps. If you have more questions hit me on facebook. (I will NOT be back on this page) Leroy Johnson standing next to a black and white pennant/flag. GOOD LUCK!!

I absolutely love the smoothness and grooviness of Chicago steppin. I am a beginner and I am determined to learn and be this groovy. My biggest challenge is staying in my lane and staying on beat and sometimes I have issues with the startup like finding the beat but snapping your fingers does help. I am looking at all the videos I can to improve and get better in this dance. Thank you for sharing 😊💃🏾❤️

Didn’t know they danced like that in ATL I thought this was a Detroit and Chicago thang. I’m actually going to a steppers class this week before I left Detroit I was only ballrooming and didn’t get a chance to learn stepping now finally in Vegas someone is teaching a steppers class. It’s no real dancing as such like this in Vegas, I miss Detroit when comes to dancing and rich in history #namaste ☺️

I went to college in Illinois during the middle to late 70's and we would go to Chicago 2 or 3 weekends every month. I was intrigued by the smooth dancing in the nightclubs there. Indeed they referred to it as bopping during that time. I was determined to learn how to do it and did so with the help of several of my college friends who were from Chicago. I later taught it to some of my southern friends and all eyes were on us when we hit the dance floor. I am now a senior citizen and can still step in the name of love.

I beg to differ with all of you. If you pay attention they teach you , all you have to do is add in what you can when you get better. It all starts with the same thing.
      1-2
      1-2-3
      1-2-3
1-2....The only reason they can do all the other stuff is because they are vets at it. If you look starting at 4:05, the guy in the suit can barely count and move his feet at the same time. But, at 4:56 he is able to twirl the instructor and still stay on beat. It is all in the count.........Try it a lil longer and I pray that one day you ladies will get it down....
Look at this video I posted below.....they are on the same count but are moving and learning as they go........th-cam.com/video/OSa4tPmduk8/w-d-xo.html

Why don’t men have to do the same counts as ladies? The men were not following any pattern, they were just stepping around randomly. But good job ladies for actually “stepping.”

I was very disappointed with your video. You indicated that you would teach a beginner how, but you didn't, instead you advance quickly to the more experience and left the beginner behind. You accelerated so quickly, leaving the begin without a chance as if to showcase your own expertise. Please be mindful that show you and teach you are similar in meaning with the expectation that within 45 minutes one would not be confused, scattered and disappointed. Please reconsider your introduction with the listener in mind more so than yourself.....

Why do all these people all over the Internet put these half ass videos on the net to teach people how to dance when they can't dance themselves. The guy couldn't keep his eyes off the floor. And let's not even talk about the lead or follow. They were horrible. Then, there's the problem with the music. If you don't dance to the beat they why play the music. It was a poor imitation of swing dancing which has been out since the 20s. I seriously how they were not getting paid for this.
