  • Thanks to a tip from one of our subscribers we had the opportunity to explore an abandoned cemetery in the woods outside of Dayton, Ohio. The cemetery is bordered by farm field on 3 sides and a creek on the 4th. The creek runs down a 10 foot deep ravine with no bridge to cross. We found records that the cemetery has been surveyed just a few times over the years as it is not open to the public. The oldest grave of a 4 year old girl that died in 1817. A log church is believed to have once resided on the property but no remnants are left. It has been abandoned and unkept for much of its life. For a couple years here and there someone is allowed to clean it up only for it to fall back into disrepair. Many of the headstones have been knocked over and broken by falling trees.

    Longish story short, I found you when looking for an Ohio version of "Sidestep Adventures." You could do a lot of good were you to read aloud the names and epitaphs of the people buried in this forgotten cemetery. People doing genealogy would certainly appreciate it. You should also let the city know about this AND the Revolutionary soldier buried there. The VA and/or The Daughters of the Revolution would install a military headstone near the original. Also, if you come across very old homes, look for lost family cemeteries nearby.
    Thanks for what you do. It's sad to see so much history being lost, but it's important to document it's existence.

    Looks like it may be a family cemetery based on the location and the name "Gard" showing up multiple times on the stones. And the 1776 marker is certainly an indication that Mr. Gard was a Revolutionary War veteran.

    • @OnceOccupied
      @OnceOccupied  6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    • @sandybrogdon975
      @sandybrogdon975 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Is the cemetery on the Find A Grave website? I wonder if anyone ever made a list of the graves there. Back in 1974, a local group of history students (this was in Indiana) walked through a town cemetery and listed all the information for folks buried there. Now, you can't even read the writing on some of the stones, and some stones have sunken so far in that you can't read anything on them. I'm glad they took the time to do that way back then.

    Abandoned cemeteries at least give evidence of burials. America has countless unknown and unmarked graves of Indians, pioneers, miners, emigrants, ranchers, soldiers and their families. It was not uncommon for people to die in the forests, mountains, prairies, and on the plains of this country during the westward expansion. They would be hastily buried and their companions would move on without erecting anything more than a board, if that, which would be washed away in spring thaws. Years later a farmer plowing his newly cleared land would come across a few rocks scattered in his path, toss them and plow the ground above graves without knowing it was a burial.

    I bet that the head stone at 8:04 (worn on top but not on bottom) was buried in the ground half way up. It's old enough that it probably sunk or had debris accumulate around it. Then someone corrected the problem and made it level with the ground. If it was covered up, rain and wind couldn't erode the writing.

    Having lived outside of Dayton for two years, I was interested in your video of this cemetery. However, informing the public of where it’s located can be a blessing or a curse! The blessing would be if it can be restored by caring volunteers, while the curse is obvious: vandals! There are more of those disrespectful and vicious devils than there are caring volunteers! You could organize a group of friends and work on restoring that cemetery, but making it’s location public, in my humble opinion, is a HUGE mistake😢.

    • @OnceOccupied

I know my GGGG grandmother Sarah Brown died near Dayton in the 1840s and my GGGG grandfather James moved to Illinois after her death, but I've never been able to find her headstone.
