I’m only twelve and everyone says I’m to young to know what I want my job to be but I love animals so much. All animals not just dogs and cats! I think rats and spiders and snakes are cute too! And pigs and cows and horses. You are so right in saying that most people think of small animal vets. I didn’t used to want to be a vet because I couldn’t bear the thought of surgery and amputation. But now I know there are other things you can do being a vet. I just found your channel and love it SO much I subscribed right away! I so badly want to be an Equine Vet who specialises in hoof and leg care. Horses have been in my life since I was five (11 and a half years!) And I've always wanted to work with them. The plan is to go in the Marines, have them pay for college, and do farrier and vet tech school. I love my horses so much and I'd be honored to take care of them and other peoples horses
I want to work in wildlife that’s where my heart is. I have a whole plan I was going to give it up since I’m 23 but honestly why not go after my dreams.

Natural science centers. I saw where in Raleigh, NC a vet was needed there too. They’ve got quite a few exotic animals there. A female sloth is there right now and a couple larger snapping turtles. I also know there’s quite a few snakes there, also there are a few other little guys and gals in there who like to hide. And there’s a boatload of butterflies in the butterflies display are.

Hi Tami. Horses are my favorite animal and I initially went to vet school to work with just them. Then I discovered that as a vet I could work with all species. So their are no limitations to what species you can work with or success you can have. Now go be great!

Of course to practice veterinary medicine you have to be a licensed veterinarian, but for example, could you work as a behaviorist, nutritionist, in public outreach, etc. without a DVM but with a degree in a related field (Psychology, Animal Science, Food Science, etc.) ?

Hi Lonewolf. Thanks for watching. You can work as a zoo veterinarian with a 4 year veterinary degree. If you would like to become board certified as an expert in the field you can also complete a residency (+2-3) years but it's not mandatory. A Doctorate of Veterinary Medicine means you are qualified to practice on multiple species. For example, in One week I may work with 10 different species. That's one of the joys of the profession.

I went to University to persue environmental science though deep down I wanted to be a vet..so i dropped that course and next year I'll be persuing the latter.
Hi Angela As a veterinarian you can work with multiple species, as many as you feel comfortable with. For specialized training, most vets choose one or two areas because of the time it takes. For example, my specialty is lab animal medicine so I am completing a 3 year residency to become board certified as an expert in the field. But I still work in general practice.

I do not understand how it is ethical, as a veterinarian who supposedly loves animals, to test on animals or be ok with people having wild animals as pets held in captivity or even to work in the beef and dairy industry where they needlessly slaughter animals.
I kind of agree, although I'm not too bothered about working with dairy cows, or beef cows in a free range setting where they're not in tiny cages. I can't imagine working on lab animals. It just seems so cruel and inhumane😢

But that could be hypocritical- I couldn't bear seeing them slaughtered myself as I love animals, but am still wiling to eat meat from a store.

Can I still become a vet if I am scared of blood, surgery, gore etc? I love animals but I am just not good with blood at all.
