Thanks for this tribute. Over the past few years the two artists who's death impacted me the most were Guy Clark and Tom Petty. I've been working on LA Freeway the past day or two because, for some reason, I've neglected to learn it all these years. I live in Los Angeles and my girlfriend and I are making plans to move to Humboldt California and live in the Redwoods. The song has been and is a rallying cry for my life.
This is the soundtrack of my youth with my BFF soulmate friend. I listen to every version I can and this is one of the best. Made it his own but kept the spirit of Guy beautifully.
Had the great pleasure of meeting Radney several years ago. He came down to Florida (Destin) to fish with a restaurant owner Charles Morgan (Harbor Docks) and did a solo acoustic show. I got there early thinking the place would be packed. I bought a beer and paid my $10 cover and no one was there? I walked out on the dock and there was Radney sitting by himself on the back of a boat. We talked for about 15 minutes with no interruption and had some laughs. We talked about Guy and Townes and he wanted to know about my military career. I later found out the show proceeds were given to the EOD Warriors Foundation. Really decent guy from what I can tell. I tell people all the time one of my favorite albums is "Del Rio Texas 1959" by Radney. A great show with only about 50 people there maximum, Radney and a guitar/sound tech. He stayed and talked to everyone and seemed to really enjoy talking with everyone. He even played my favorite "Half of My Mistakes". My other favorite "L.A. Freeway" version is by Jerry Jeff Walker, the original "cosmic cowboy" who we lost not long ago. RIP JJW.
I had moved to Houston and found One Number One in a used recored store in Montrose. Not really knowing anything about Guy or Texas songwriters, I bouth the album because I knew that Emmy Lou Harris thought highly of him. The record opened a new world to me for which I remain truly grateful. I did get to see him in Houston and other places in small venues, each show was unique and a gem.
Radner moves to the head of the country/folk artists for me with his rendition of LA Freeway! He owns that song!
