We text a large number of people for referrals and only a handful of them actually get back to us. But what if multiple people are ready to refer us - like imagine a person X is ready to refer me and we move forward with further procedures, meanwhile another person Y also replies back saying that he is also ready to refer me. What should be done in such a situation? If I were not to accept the Y's referral, doesn't it actually leave a bad impression about me? Or can I accept multiple referrals for the same job id (giving the tests on different dates)?

I think it's smart to ask multiple people to refer you. No Y should feel bad if you politely and honestly tell that someone else helped you already. On the other hand, he/she might get offended if informed by HR instead.
Honesty is always the better option according to me.
To avoid such situations, it would be smart to message all Ys whom you asked for referral right after X does it!
