Wow you made this look incredibly accessible thank you! My husband wants leather-bound books in his "dream library" but I think this will be more realistic. Can probably use fabric and it will still be nice too. Excited to try this out.
What a lovely idea! I will certainly use this technique to make my books appear expensive and relate to the Gothic/ baroque style that I envision for my library. Happy crafting to you!
Nice video, Lemon. To make work much easier I would recommend to use a special tool to make holes for stitching. It looks like a rolling wheel with needles and handler. You roll it over thin leather\fabric and it makes straight line of holes for your needle.
love this channel, taught me alot! im just a 19 year old boy who is actually interested in martial arts and guns and knives but im also into some crafting things and this channel really helped!
Something that I've always wondered is if there's a way to make this for journals/sketchbooks with an elastic band on it? I've got some old Moleskine-like sketchbooks and some perfect-bound notebooks that I've always wanted to put some slip-on book covers, but the elastic band always seemed to be awkwardly in the way...
I actually thought of this method earlier😍, I used it for my portfolio (that I learned how to do from you ❤) and used it for my interview for Faculty of Applied Sciences & Arts. Hope to become someone like you in the future ❤
This is very pretty :) if I were to do it I would start the stitching in the outside corner and go right round the spine as well, I think it would give the spine a more finished look :)
I have made a similar cover with the help of this awesome video. Really helpful, but I wanted a cheaper alternative to leather, so I used a very old pair of jeans. I wanted to include the seam so it would go over the cover, but I didn't consider that one part of the jeans was, how do I put it, "wider". This means I have a litte too much fabric on the top of the book than on the botton. The cover would wrinkle if I tried to correct this. So I just cut out a triangle shape and sewed this togerther. For the top and bottom, I didn't sew the edges, but burned them because I like the look of it. Edit: If you want to turn the fabric inside out so the seam won't be visible, remember to add a little fabric on each side.
Hey Jennifer! First of all I love all the videos you make and I have watched most. Thank you for getting me into book binding I seriously love it. Can you tell me if a kettle stitched (I guess) book ideal as a sketchbook? Please reply if possible. Thanks for being amazing!
Im planning to make my own sketchbook using coptic stitch and i was worried about the spine being exposed and this book cover is great! I hope i can find a vinyl cloth here. thanks for this tutorial :)
Hi, i like your channel and this project is just what i need to make a book cover for my board game rule books. The only difference is is that its not a hardcover. Does anybody think it wil be a problem? The way i see it is that it will work if i put the flaps closer to the center of the book wehn folding it over. Maybe even inserting a cardboard in there to make it sturdier.
Great tutorial! I once used the material of an old purse to make the cover for a sketchbook and it worked out pretty well! One thing: how do you get used to sewing so much? I don't think I'll ever love sewing, I only sew when I absolutely have to do it (too precise work, gets tedious).
Thanks! Same here on the sewing... I don't have a sewing machine. I'm fine with sewing books together, and small projects, but I usually don't sew anything much larger than that...
I arrived at this after watching a disc binding video. I like the security and look of the leather notebook, but I'm wondering if there are any extra steps or changes to the measurements if you were going to do this for a disc bound notebook. Any extra ease that would need to be added for the discs?
Loved this video. I’m looking to protect a first edition book so I was looking for a leather cover or a fabric clamshells box when I stumbled upon this cool video. I’m wondering though, aside from using leather, is there another material I could I coude to the rotent the book; it’s cover is very delicate and I’m concerned it won’t survive outing it in the sleeve. Form searching online, I found mention of acid free paper and ph neutral something else and I’m just trying to figure out how much stuff I should actually do to my book.
Could this method work with regular fabric? Like those quarter sheets you can get at Walmart? Or will I have to fold the ends of the fabric to make it look nicer? Could you do this again with regular fabric?
I want to make a tutorial request. I found someone make a DIY project where they turned an old hardbound book into an artist's sketch case. (It's the cover of a large leatherbound tome, with a briefcase type handle, and inside is a sketch pad on the inner right cover, and pockets for paint and garter straps for brushes on the inner left cover.) The outcome, I think was really creative. But in terms of quality, she just did hot glue and I'm pretty sure that's going to fall off very easily. Hope you could make your own version because I think you would make a better version.
I like the idea of making a case where the outside looks like a book (up to you if you'll also make it from an existing book, or if you'll make your own leather book casing from scratch!--you're good at that, and it's interesting!)
do you have a Book cover with a Horse Saddle Stitch ? Great video..thank you...gotta get busy now, and cut up all my wife's old unused leather bags..lol
Hi. I love your diy. I was wondering if you can make something that hold a storybook for travelling. I love my books but I hate it when the cover gets bend. Especially when there are a lot of items in the bag. Do you have any solution that can solve this, that is also lightweight.
can you make a tutorial for a journal using a cover from an old book? i have these amazing covers for books i dont read that i'd love to use as journals.
Where do you get your vinyl? Its a bunch of really nice colours and the thickness looks really good. If you had an online supplier that you would share, it would be great. Thanks :)
hey, i want to make this with a hardback cover book that doesn't fully open outwards, will this also work, or do i need to make the folded part on the inside smaller?
I always use magenta. It's the sturdiest and toughest color to use when making book covers. I'm kidding of course. When I heard you describe the book cover, it just struck me as being funny. I did, however, find the video very informative and helpful.
Hey hey question from SC haha I’m def not the kind of guy who does “arts and crafts” 🤨😂but here lately I have gotten into rebinding my Bible and when I did it , idk enjoyed the mess out of it ! That being said recovering something w Real Leather vs Faux is like night and day.. and being Faux is not porous it took me a while to realize while there’s a lot of adhesives for real leather ones that I can easily do like rounded corners and pleats w PVA works good but it DOES NOT work on Faux so I can’t make the pleats before the glue is hardened or just isn’t easy as the real thing BUT THIS STUFF YOU HAVE LOOKS LIKE SUEDE ON THE INISE AND ALMOST REAL LEATHER BUT U SAID ITS NOT AT THE BEGINNING I BELIEVE?? Could you use a PVA on this peice of material you have dear ? I appreciate any feedback and thanks again take care !
omgosh fantastic! Now all my crappy cheap sketch books can look FANCY
Did you just correct my spelling? Because if you did... you did so wrong. 'Fancy' is the correct spelling.
+iZockr *Fancy
Just exactly what I was hoping for! Perfect for protecting a folded journal from sheets of watercolour paper. Thank you very much😀

I'm really glad you used a cruelty free version of leather. It looks great and i don't think I'd be able to tell from looking at it.
Really helpful! I'm going to use an old jeans to make this. Thanks :D
Rifu Mohamed great idea!
Wow. What a simple way to make your books look awesome! Thanks!
This was exactly what I was looking for! Great tutorial!

This can really help me keep my pens and pencils too also I think it's great to add tiny pockets to the side for cards of idea.
love this channel, taught me alot! im just a 19 year old boy who is actually interested in martial arts and guns and knives but im also into some crafting things and this channel really helped!

Wow! That was super simple looking! I think I'll make a bunch and take them to a local LARP, and sell them for in game currency.
I'll be rich!
This is so perfect and it's such an easy way to make your books look so much cooler ^^ thanks for the video, I will try this!
I actually thought of this method earlier😍, I used it for my portfolio (that I learned how to do from you ❤) and used it for my interview for Faculty of Applied Sciences & Arts. Hope to become someone like you in the future ❤
i wondered my coptic stitch looked way to rough thanks now I can beautify my 'self binded' book to something like a pro .
So we could do this for the disc bound notebooks as well? How great !!
I'm covering my whole hp series with this!
Let me know how it works out! I was planning on doing this too.
Fantastic! Just discovered your channel and love all the projects. Can't wait to see what you'll try next.. Thank you

I got so excited when i saw you made a new video, loved it and hope to make it, obe question, why is your needle bent?
Thanks! It's a curved sewing needle. You can also use a straight, sometimes I like to work with it instead because it goes around the stitches faster.
thnk u soooo much... i jst love ur videos...these r so helpful... thnk u
Very helpful.
Love all your vids...Awesome idea :)
Oooh, this this a great Idea. I might have to steal this from you. :P
Jennifer, you have to do a tutorial video for a fabric hardcover and padded tablet caee!
Huge fan of your channel. Hope you'll consider the idea. ;D

Hello. Love your tutorials. I am eager to try this. Where should I look to buy the vinyl? Thanks.

Great video
Do you have any videos on hard cover leather planner diy ?
I am so going to do this on my school books next year 🙌 as a motivation not to draw on my book covers and so they dont rip in my bag ^_^
I ❤️ ur vids!!
Good day, i have a question, will this techniquebe ok on a perfect bind book? Thank you great video

+Mmina Maclang I might give that a try! Would you be more interested in making it a case or turning the old book into a blank sketchbook itself?
I like the idea of making a case where the outside looks like a book (up to you if you'll also make it from an existing book, or if you'll make your own leather book casing from scratch!--you're good at that, and it's interesting!)
do you have a Book cover with a Horse Saddle Stitch ? Great video..thank you...gotta get busy now, and cut up all my wife's old unused leather bags..lol

Hope your wife won't miss her bags! ;)

Hey! It is possible to simply put some PVA glue with this type of material, as you do in your other cover tutorial?
can you make a tutorial for a journal using a cover from an old book? i have these amazing covers for books i dont read that i'd love to use as journals.
Can you also make a tutorial for making inscriptions for a book.
Could you make a tutorial making a medieval bookcover ?
Where do you get your vinyl? Its a bunch of really nice colours and the thickness looks really good. If you had an online supplier that you would share, it would be great. Thanks :)
Nice!

Would this work if you used an old leather jacket from good will?
Hi can you make a tutorial of adenda cover or binder? Thanks

can you use this to make a hard cover for the perfect binding?
Do you think you can add a card pockets on one side? I don't bring my wallet most of the time and just use the card pockets in my planner.
hey, i want to make this with a hardback cover book that doesn't fully open outwards, will this also work, or do i need to make the folded part on the inside smaller?

I'm totally thinking of a portfolio with inside pockets for business cards.
