The falling action was brilliantly done, though I agree with Mike that my general detachment with some of the characters who died, Pallino excepted, lessened the impact. I think my favorite aspect of the book was the culture / political philosophy / Cielcin ethnography aspect of the book… so basically the entire middle section. I still haven’t had a chance to fully process the last quarter of the book, since I read it in two sittings and finished right before our discussion, haha.
Glad to hear it. Yeah, I think fantasy/SF suffers from a major problem, which is that its fans talk about fantasy/SF stories almost entirely with respect to the characters and plots. You rarely hear a fantasy/SF fan discuss philosophical implications, deep themes, underlying motifs or symbols. This isn't the case with classic literature, say.
Wasn’t the spaceship thing explained in book 2? It was the first time the quiet intervened to switch out of a version of him that was going to die. That’s why the exalted fortune teller guy got freaked out see Hadrian, he had an inconsistency in his timeline
Loved the book. I don’t get the confusion. I found there were unanswered questions obviously being not the last book but I didn’t find the book confusing.
I think KoD was my 2nd favorite behind Howling Dark. I couldn’t put it down once they got to the Cielcin planet. Excited for the next one and have no idea where the story is going next.
The hyper sensitivity to spoilers was really on display to me with that daniel greene video talking about the new sanderson books. He mentioned the just the name of the books and people were enraged. It was really bizarre to me.
My favorite of the series. I really enjoyed the first three, but the series really matures and hits it's thematic stride in this book.
