It's been mentioned a number of times but it bears repeating for anyone reading the comments - there's a comment that the M14 uses the same ammo as the AK-47. There are two types of 7.62 ammo, WP and NATO. They are not interchangeable and represent different ammo pools.
Yes. Well technically in RL you could try firing WP ammo in NATO chambered guns. I said technically because it fits in the chamber because the casing is the correct diameter and the shorter casing fits into the longer space for it. But it massively increases the misfire rate i.e. bullet casings are ejected that have not actually fired. Keeping that in mind while *possible* it is not *viable* and strongly discouraged by the militaries and gun experts.
@@JesusKreist No 7.62 WP is meant to be 7.62x39mm/7.62x54R and 7.62 NATO is supposed to be 7.62x51mm. there is no such thing as 7.62x39 NATO so firing a WP ammo in a NATO chambered gun would not work. WP is short for Warsaw pact meaning countries that use Warsaw ammo like the soviets in cold war

I really liked the FAMAS in JA2, because it was so quick firing - almost pistol equivalent firing speed. Sure, it had short range, but only compared to other rifles - it was still long enough range to allow adequate tactical versatility. Pity it seems to not be much good in JA3, it was already unpopular in JA2 for its short range and repair issues.
Theory-crafting a little bit for the AKs: perhaps instead of trying to shore up the low accuracy from aiming, instead build it for spitting out lots of lead. Light stock, recoil booster, and an extended magazine will let you sling a lot of lead, and you can optionally put a vertical grip, bipod (so you can occasionally pop shots off at medium range without accuracy going too bad) and (if you have a chip to spare) a reflex sight. Ultimately, a build optimized for shorter ranges, but one which gives some absolutely devastating firepower if you can land several hits (and which substitutes volume of fire for accuracy).
I have to point out: burst doesn't do 150% damage of a single shot. Since it does carry an additional 20% penalty to Hit, it does 120% basedamage of a single shot on average for 3 times the Ressource investment. 2 Single shots will out perform a burst in almost any case.
Well, what the idea of the damage distribution is and the actual reality in the game are two different worlds. This is one of the worst parts of the game balance right now, cause due to your correct statement up there it's almost never worth bursting. If the bullets had just a flat damage when they hit it would be much better. This level of variance makes single shot just that much better. And it's more ammo efficient too. I really hope this will be revised or modded soon, cause Assault Rifles should be better I feel.
Bipod negates penalty to hit while prone, and recoil booster adds 4th shot, making certain rifles very good as overwatch guns with light stocks. So some rifles perform better with single shots (mostly 5.56 rifles) and others as LMG overwatch guns.
@@mazdrpan4099 The bipod is just a flat acc increase that benefits single shots as well, allowing you to guarantee headshots and/or save AP. So the AUG is the best one to savescum for from Laylee's Loot Boxes? The other contenders are the HK21, AK-SU, and M1014. 5.56mm weapons in general deals the least damage, 7,62x51mm deals the most, and 7.62x39mm is in between. You only get 5.56mm regularly after getting out of the island, and 7.62mm NATO are rare in the beginning but gets more common as the game progress while the 7.62x39mm goes the other way around as those rebels use NATO weapons instead. I wish they properly add 5.45mm and 7.62x54mm along with weapons that use them (Mosin Nagant, DP-28, SV-98, PKM).
Hk21 is hands down the best weapon in the game. Fully modded in the hands of a good merc you can kill anything you see in overwatch. IMO SMGs and automatic rifles are generally terrible assuming ammo is not an issue, which it usually is so they do get some run.

The issue with splitting up the Warsaw Pact ammo types to be more accurate (5.45x39 and 7.62x54R being split out of the current “7.62 WP” ammo) is that there wouldn’t be enough guns to support them being anything but niche use. The only gun that actually uses 7.62x39 that’s in-game right now is the AK-47 (also technically an AKM….); so they would need to add the SKS most likely, but that would be a whole other can of worms on classifying it. 5.45 would support the AK-74 and the “AK-SU” (AKS-74U); 7.62x54R would only be for the Dragunov currently, so they would need to add a few weapons that use it (likely the Mosin-Nagant and/or the PK machine gun). Still, that adds a lot more complexity for the ammo situation which this game seems to be abstracting instead.
@@zanaduz2018 Sure, but if dev dont want add more ammo, SVD shoud IMHO use 7.62 x 51 not 7.62 x 39 ammo. Why? BC in real life we have SVD in 7.62 x 51 (civilian version, etc). And 7.62 x 54R and 7.62 x 51 is more like tae same class cardrige (big cardrige for rifle) not intermidie cardrige for assault guns like 7.62 x 39.
Correction. 7.62x51-- this is NATO standart. 7.62x39-- this WP standart. So M14 biggest downside is using valuable NATO ammo with questionable efficency and high enough consumption rate. When I recieved my 1st M14, I've already had FN-FALL and Galil.) It's pretty frustrating, that trading system in the game is nonexistant. After JA2 it's humiliating: you are almost forced to savescuming in order to provide yourself with ammo and needed guns. I think, that this issue is a 1st one to be addressed by modders.))
The main use case for the M14 seems to be more of a “sniper rifle that can burst if needed” than anything else. Given the mods tend to focus on accuracy, range and the reasonably high damage of 7.62 NATO; this seems to be the main way to want to build this gun. (Its uses in reality tend towards this as well, after it was dropped as the main US service rifle in favor of the M16 family during Vietnam.) Edit: The synergy between Heavy Stock, Extended Gain-Twist Barrel, and a Quick Prism Scope is probably the biggest way to go when modding the M14, as it gives you very accurate first snap shots with enough AP to pop off another; given the compatibility with a suppressor you can make this into a “rapid” stealthy sniper with the backup ability to burst/auto-fire if your sniper gets into trouble at less stand-off ranges than most sniper rifles would be good at.
from some reason, my Steyer (from loot box) has 52% crit. And as is here already mentioned, is not 7,62 like 7,62. nato standard and WP (Warsaw pact) aren't possible to use in all guns, just specific ones. so you have 5.56, 7,62 nato and 7,62 WP guns/ammo and thier versions. I found it by hard experience, when I have 500+ WP ammo, but my magazines in guns are empty... so you could sort/compare guns per ammo as well. anyway, thanks for your videos regarding that, it helping a lot.
I thought this was the case too with a Dragunov I got as a drop; the reality is that it came loaded with hollow point ammo so it has an insane crit chance but no armor penetration.
Huh, so you don't have 5.45x39 in this game. Ak-74 and Aksu-74 should use that caliber. Though to be fair not even Jagged alliance 2 went into getting 7.62x54R for the Dragunov, so I guess there are limits on how many types of ammunition you can have in the game. The Desert eagle upgrade using .50 BMG is also hilarious though if you look at how that cartridge looks (.50 action express that the desert eagle actually uses is a much shorter cartridge). Ah, Jagged Alliance 2 was the game that really got me into gun nerdery.
There's an error in the game. The AK74 has the wrong caliber and does far too much damage for its caliber. Basically, apart from the .44, there should be 6 rifle calibers in the game: Soviet weapons: AK47: 7.62x39WP AK74, RPK74,...: 5.45x39 WP Dragunov,...: 7.62x54 R Western Weapons: M14, M24, FN FAL, Galil, HK21,...: 7.62x51 NATO M16, G36, AUG, Famas,...: 5.56x45 NATO M82: .50 BMG or 12.7x99 NATO
Assault rifles in this game either have recoil booster upgrade or they are crap. That being said, AKs are best for close to medium range overwatch/burst fire without aiming. M14 is best as long range burst fire rifle. With vertical grip, UV dot and 10x scope it gets its ridiculous aiming bonus for free. This is very strong on high dexterity mercs and lets you consistently hit all 4 burst shots within weapon range. 5.56 weapons are overall disappointing but AUG is fairly modifiable and G-36 at least performs decently even without mods. Not having the 4th shot in burst fire really hurts their performance though and ammo is expensive to craft. In the end the best assault rifle in JA 3 is the Dragunov. Yep. Easily acquired early on from the Poachers Camp. Devs pls remove the burst fire from Dragunov, its beyond silly and makes all the other assault rifles pointless.
@@tedybomber1713 It's very random. It seems that there are like 10 or so different boxes all with their own loot tables. My first game I got a M1014. My third game I had to save scum forever to get the HK21.
Hugely overbalanced. Considering availability of bullets and modification, the sum-total of usefulness of every gun is the same. There is no sense of progression or improvement as you go deeper into the game's story. There is no real need to upgrade to a new gun. Personally speaking, I find this quite disappointing and unrewarding.
I had no impression like this at all. You start out with old fashioned guns drop wise and you slowly get to use more and more modern weapons which have significantly better stats all over the board. Like you start out with gear that's mostly WW2 and some AK-47s and then you have to gather yer guns. Assault Rifles are overbalanced though, their burst and auto fire potential leaves most players unhappy - me included. @@Ic0nGaming Exactly... you can tweak your playstyle to get the same amount of use out of any assault rifle. Not a single assault rifle is objectively better than the rest. You can play the entire game with AK-47s without any significant disadvantage compared to other "advanced" or "late game" assault weapons.

Also, shouldn’t the AK-74 use 5.45 (so by game logic, 5.56)?
@@okonkwojones there is at least a modification for the deagle, and the same simplification is used as for. 44 caliber guns - peacekeeper and Remington
@@okonkwojones Well yes but actually no.
There would be such a round in the game - yes, but since it is not there, it is unimportant for the guide. It's just that my initial comment was that the moment with different 7.62 rounds is being missed in the guide. The author has them combined using a mod, I guess, and this can be misleading - why does AK not want to load 7.62(x51)
@@siriushelldog6771 oh, so they do differentiate between NATO and R in vanilla?
for the ak 47 the bipod, grenade launcher and grip block each other (can only have one or the other)
Thanks!
@@Ic0nGaming actually I was wrong, sorry. I was testng this the wrong way around. The launcher blocks both of the other mods but they don't block each other
So the AUG is the best one to savescum for from Laylee's Loot Boxes?
I once got G36 from Laylee's loot box.
Hk21 is hands down the best weapon in the game. Fully modded in the hands of a good merc you can kill anything you see in overwatch. IMO SMGs and automatic rifles are generally terrible assuming ammo is not an issue, which it usually is so they do get some run.
I miss a conclusion at the end of the video. Like your final top 3 ...
I love Galil, cause of long range I build it and as my whole team. Never found G36 for almost 150 days...
What about sniper rifles guide like that one? Will you make video about that?
Bit off Topic. I am unable to mount a bipod on my Famas. Any ideas why?
I'd like to know if the AK74 in game really uses the same ammo as the AK47. Because the real life model doesn't.
Sadly, it's true. The gun model uses a 5.45 mm bakelite magazine as standard, but in game the weapon fires 7.62x39mm WP bullets.
Isn´t the G3 in the game? It is one of the most produced assault rifles in the world. Or is it to simlar to the FN-Fal that they don´t implemented it?
nice vid, however you missed missing the commando !
edit: my bad lol, the commando is classified as submachine gun :D it looks almost exactly like as the ar-15 or m16a2 :(
I hate how ak74 uses wrong ammo
Yeah, if they didn't want to add 5.54x39 ammo they should have put the AK-103 into the game instead of the AK-74.
SVD too, shoud use 7.62 x 54 R, not 7.62 x 39
@@jazon9 I think they have the G98 using 7.62 NATO too? I would be amazed if there wasn't mods coming for this already. It's an unfortunate comromise for "casuals" is my guess. Missed opportunity to teach people which weapon uses which caliber. Also... AK74 does 50% more dmg than AK47? ... sure XD
Nice work. Thanks
Correction. 7.62x51-- this is NATO standart. 7.62x39-- this WP standart. So M14 biggest downside is using valuable NATO ammo with questionable efficency and high enough consumption rate. When I recieved my 1st M14, I've already had FN-FALL and Galil.)
It's pretty frustrating, that trading system in the game is nonexistant.
(Its uses in reality tend towards this as well, after it was dropped as the main US service rifle in favor of the M16 family during Vietnam.)
Edit: The synergy between Heavy Stock, Extended Gain-Twist Barrel, and a Quick Prism Scope is probably the biggest way to go when modding the M14, as it gives you very accurate first snap shots with enough AP to pop off another; given the compatibility with a suppressor you can make this into a “rapid” stealthy sniper with the backup ability to burst/auto-fire if your sniper gets into trouble at less stand-off ranges than most sniper rifles would be good at.
Yup. Basically DMR.
What about the Commando (yeah, lol)? Or is it considered an SMG?
Love the vid!
The subtle satire with the A-15 is hilarious.
That's about as subtle as a hand-grenade.
from some reason, my Steyer (from loot box) has 52% crit.
Noob
Its obvious 7.62 there were 2 types for warsawpact or Nato
that might be because you loaded it with hollow points or other bullets that increase crit
I thought this was the case too with a Dragunov I got as a drop; the reality is that it came loaded with hollow point ammo so it has an insane crit chance but no armor penetration.
Hollow points have like 50% crit
The AR-15 should be renamed the M4.
The g 36 is funny cause it comes stock with 2 opitcs
Huh, so you don't have 5.45x39 in this game. Ak-74 and Aksu-74 should use that caliber. Though to be fair not even Jagged alliance 2 went into getting 7.62x54R for the Dragunov, so I guess there are limits on how many types of ammunition you can have in the game. The Desert eagle upgrade using .50 BMG is also hilarious though if you look at how that cartridge looks (.50 action express that the desert eagle actually uses is a much shorter cartridge). Ah, Jagged Alliance 2 was the game that really got me into gun nerdery.
Honestly I'm okay with them simplifying things, it's easier to keep track of my squad's inventory if there isn't 30 different ammos to keep track of
Is there a video for the sniper rifles?
Not yet ;)
M16A2 realistically never had the capability of full auto only burst and simi auto (single shot).
No g11 ?
There's an error in the game. The AK74 has the wrong caliber and does far too much damage for its caliber.
Basically, apart from the .44, there should be 6 rifle calibers in the game:
Soviet weapons:
AK47: 7.62x39WP
AK74, RPK74,...: 5.45x39 WP
Dragunov,...: 7.62x54 R
Western Weapons:
M14, M24, FN FAL, Galil, HK21,...: 7.62x51 NATO
M16, G36, AUG, Famas,...: 5.56x45 NATO
M82: .50 BMG or 12.7x99 NATO
Missing the AK-SU which you can get from Laylee's Loot Boxes or Scully.
Didn't miss it, it's in the SMG category and will be in the next video =)
@@Ic0nGaming Ohhh its an SMG. Didnt know that. thanks
@@sirbowen4358 No probs! Some of them look a lot like an Assault Rifle, the Commando for example.
Devs pls remove the burst fire from Dragunov, its beyond silly and makes all the other assault rifles pointless.
youre missing the Colt Commando
It's in the SMG section
Did anyone else get the Aug in ur first loot box?
I got an HK21
@@MidnightHozz hmm still feels like a scam for the first one.
@@tedybomber1713 It's very random. It seems that there are like 10 or so different boxes all with their own loot tables. My first game I got a M1014. My third game I had to save scum forever to get the HK21.
AK74 is not 7.62wp IRL. it should be 5.45
Where is commando?
Coming up in the next one, it's categorized in the SMGs
Lacking commando gun
It's not officially an Assault Rifle, it's listed under the SMG category and will ofc be in the next video =)
@@Ic0nGaming true
But apart from that, no the usefulness of the guns ain't the same, you should try to pick some weapon that fits to your stats/perks and you will see a significant power spike.
I mean ammo is not at all available. Unless you are playing a modded version of the game ammo is an issue for half the game.
@@MidnightHozz My point is, availability of ammo (or lack thereof) is another factor that contributes to overbalancing. You find an assault rifle that suits your playstyle, sooner or later the lack of ammo will handicap your ability to use it.
@@KK-fi6ms I guess I don't know what you mean by overbalanced. I definitely felt a sense of progression with the weapons. The progression just peaks too early and some weapon types are garbage compared to others.
