- Robland X-31 Shelix head installation in the jointer / planer. Next video on the top installation and alignment. This video was just a loose guidance on how I installed the cutter head on my machine. All safety and manufacture warnings should be headed.
Originally I removed the dust chute before removing the cutter assembly. There is a set screw and jam nut on the outboard bearing cap in line with the dust chute pivot point. Back off on the jam nut and the set screw to free up the chute. The chute can be pushed to the side of the set screw and then pivoted out of the assembly.
It should be noted that many have had luck sliding the drive pulley off after removing the roll pin so the table top did not have to be removed. unfortunately the pulley on my machine was corroded on to the shaft and had to be removed with a pulley remover.
a small trick on getting the springs in easy: you put the cutterblock upside down, put in the springs, put in the infeed and outfeed roll and flip them over all together. check out the video of our factory, it's actually in there. great video!
I have a x31 with lots of parts missing. I need springs on planer in feeds as wel as spacers. I also need the blades and blade retainer blocks and screws. some of my machanical gears is also missing and thechain tensioner. here in south africa we dont have support for these machines. is there any help from your side
This has be valuable little series about planer head disassembly/assembly. I have had LX310 ~22 years now. I wonder though have you encountered any jointer cutter head bearing problems?
The bearings on my machine have been fine but they could be replaced without removing the saw table. Originally I had to remove the saw table since the pulley was corroded on to the jointer shaft and I wanted to increase the dust collection hose to the saw to four inches.
Would you recommend this machine? Do you like it?
Thank you for your help. I was given this machine. I’m trying to get up to date on it. My question is: I don’t understand how you attached shaper tools to the machine. I am wondering if I am short on accessories.
The X-31 has a stepped shaft that the shaper tools slide down on and are secured with the top bolt in the shaft. There is a rather large and heavy dust hood with fence that secures to the top of the table which also has a hold down bar and front sheild. If you intend to use the shaper it is recommended to use a power feeder. If you do not have the owers manual you can down load one on the Robland X-31 groups IO site. groups.io/g/roblandx31 this was the old yahoo group. There is also a face book group. I do not use the shaper myself but there is several in the group that does.
Looks like we both have similar models. Id like to replace my belts but have little information what size and brand. Grateful for your experiences.
Here is a list of the Gates belts on my machine.
Since they had Robland on them I am sure they were made special for them. You can go to gates www.gates.com/us/en/power-transmission/v-belts/banded-v-belt/c/108 and use the deminsions of the current belt to look up a replacement. They give you options such as outside circumference, width and so on. I wish I would have measured them when they were off of the machine but did not. Another option is to use a linked belt which is adjustable by just removing links.

@@davidpape9726 Thank You!
Again thanks for posting. Am interested in your procedure for alignment.
I am just about finished with it. I'll try to get it done this week and have it posted on the X31 Yahoo groups site. I could post it on the Facebook site as well. Thanks
Absolutely awesome David!

David, This is a big job for me. Would really help to know if you wrote down tools used and items purchased. I figure I better get this done while I still can and while you may be available. By the way, what mortise chuck did you buy in your upgrade? Have you written down all the belt sizes you have replaced. I'd feel better replacing all of mine too.
It really is not as big a job as it seems because the top would not need to be pulled completely off if all you were going to do is replace the jointer shaft. I replaced the small hose to the saw with a four inch which required alterations to the saw carrier. The jointer pulley is held on with a roll pin and after removal of the pin may pry off with a couple of bars or screw drivers. My pulley was corroded on so the table top would have needed to be lifted a couple of inches at least for the pulley to clear. I had to use a gear puller to remove it after heating with a torch. The first time you take it apart is to get measurements of the shaft because several different shafts were used over the years although all of them are real close to each other. I have a step by step word document if that helps.
I did not make a list of tools but if you have a flat blade screw driver, phillips screw driver, hammer, 3/16"? roll pin punch or pin punch, basic set of metric wrenches and sockets, two jaw gear puller if pulley is corroded on and a set of metric hex key wrenches you should be good to go. I will have to look up the belt numbers I have them in a file some where.
@@davidpape9726 wow, appreciate the response. I have the tools im sure. thought i'd duplicate or change what you did since I don't believe in reinventing the wheel. I'll have my some do the parts where you bent your body and laid on the floor. impressed with that too. I destroyed my back but I find work arounds with pulleys and such. Love woodworking even if I have to stretch it out. Can't work for someone at that pace but just thankful every-time I complete even small tasks.
Would like that doc you talked about. I probably have software that will open it and convert it to a pdf.
Tried to communicate with the new distributor and factory. Don't guess they are able to support people that own their older equip. I've noticed real stiffness using the lift bar on the table saw. Doubt it was broken-in but after all these years lubrication is probably dry. The belts work but they are old enough to be replaced. Anything you find I'll appreciate. I us an I phone and a scanner app when sending docs these days. If u use an iPhone i'll send app names-but I've noticed Notes has a camera option in it now.
Son not some

@@rickgordon8377 email at dapape001gmail.com I can send it as a PDF if you perfer. I have all the drawings from Byrd including the one they did for me. I believe you can now order direct from Byrd if you desire, at least they have a contact form now. There is also several other makers of spiral heads as well.
Do you know how to access the planet height adjustment? My crank is free spinning and doesn’t lower or raise the base.
Sorry it has been awhile but I have working a 13 hour night shift. First make sure the plastic handle is not stripped out. If that is not it then the gear case asme screw is the hardest item to get to. The X-31 is made in sections and unfortunately planner section is one piece. Short of lifting the whole machine and putting it on cribbing I do not know what else you could do. You might put this question to the Robland X-31 group at roblandx31@groups.io
Sorry I could not be any more help.
