As a preschool teacher, THANK YOU for starting by talking about the readiness element! Some parents really push kids towards reading before they show any natural interest, and forcing it too early can make some children think that they hate reading! Following their interests and cues and thoughtfully selecting books are really two of the most important early steps.

please dont let her give this amazing habit up! my mother taught me how to read when i was very young. she would read to me and then read with me. I built this amazing habit of reading because of her and i will thank her everyday for it because books are my whole life and idk what i would do without them

Also, as a specialist, let me tell parents who may be concerned about slow or delayed readers- kids absolutely take reading at their own pace and there’s no need to compare, but also don’t be afraid to get a specialist’s opinion. There might be something else going on, like dyslexia or a decoding issue that can be tackled, but it’d be difficult for the kiddo to go through without support.

The timing is so important, I learned to read at age 4, by the time I started kindergarten at age 5, I'd read the newspaper. When my son turned 5 and he wasn't willing to give reading a try, I got worried and tried to push him but didn't work. He's now 6 and he just started to get curious about reading (he's great with numbers). I need to constantly remind myself that he has his own process and rate of progress.

My parents would just read to me every night before bed. They didn't try to teach me or anything, they'd just read books to me. By the time I was about 4 ½, I was reading all on my own and I LOVED reading. I turned into that bookworm kid 🤣

I have a good memory now but I was a sponge when I was a preschooler. I used to memorize books after my parents read them to me once and I said what I memorized while looking at the words. That’s pretty much how I learned lol.

I absolutely loved to read with my parents or twin sister when I was little (and I still love reading), so this was such a nostalgia trip.
I can still remember learning how to read, memorising words, and going through sentences with my parents (anyone else use the Biff, Chip and Kipper books a lot in the earlier years of school?)

Since my aunt doesn’t know how to parent I’m gonna use this video when I see my 7 y/o cousin. She never reads to him, and never helps him, just lets him read the pictures in books. He only knows his ABC’s and easy 2-4 letter words (I.E. dog, it, small) I actually played a big part in his ABC learning, when I saw him I told him to try and read the signs, and what letters were on them. He has lots of the “my first reading” books and used to LOVE paw patrol and I read it to him and let him read the small words. I hope my aunt works harder because it’s NOT my responsibility, but I mean someone has to, even if it’s a 12-year-old.

Just want to add a quick note about reading; if you’re child still doesn’t really like to thought of reading when they are a bit older or they are still having a bit of a hard time with some words after repeating them after quite a bit. Make sure to monitor them as they could be dyslexic (these are the signs my parents noticed when I was younger). And don’t worry dyslexia is not as scary is it might sound/seem I promise as someone with dyslexia. But the earlier you can catch some signs of it the better! Again not here to be a downer or to scare anyone just thought this might be helpful to some.

Some kids are just like that. My little brother tended to go from zero to 100 with a lot of his skils. He went from refusing to use the potty at all for a really long time to using it perfectly as soon as he started. at four, one day, he just read out the headline to the newspaper article my dad was reading perfectly. He was one of those kids who refused to show others a skill until he knew he had it down so there was a lot of worry about him developing slowly until we realized that.

when I was little this was the same for me. I did not like to read until I found Pete the cat and fancy nancy these along with some others help me learn that reading could be fun. I remember the day the crayons quit, it was my favorite book ever. These books were still hard for me to read though and I hatted when someone corrected me on a word, but at the same time I wish that people just told me what it was on some other words, and you can't ever tell witch one it is. This may make it hard for you as a parent, but Tess is a grate kid and very smart just like you so I hope you both will figure it out. best wishes!

I also learned how to read, But in less than a month. I learned how to read super early thanks to my church's activities and to my preschool teachers that lead me in how to read when i was 2 years old.

My kid reading journey - only child, during pandemic got limited 1 hr TV. I started bringing different books from the library . The kid getting bored picked one and never stopped reading. Got through 2 summer reading challenge. 📚 😊

That's AMAZING!!!! We definitely needed the peer pressure of Kindergarten... but limiting the TV is so clutch... if they are bored enough, right? Ha. Thanks so much for watching! xoxo Elle

Personally, I learned to read when I turned 3 ( and I haven’t stopped since lol Im now 10 and reading Harry Potter for the 13th time 😂) I can def say it’s all about that right book. My mom bought me about 30 books, and I only liked 2. Any way my brother who is almost 6 is still have trouble recognizing letters. His teacher sent home 5 sight words for him to try and what we did was ( since he loves stuffed animals and nerf guns ) each word made the animal do an action. Like if he said the word “ It “ the panda would jump. We also tried putting magnets on the words and sticking them to the door. If he got it right, he could shoot it with his nerf gun. Both worked and now he’s on to level 3 books!

My daughter was very much like Tess. She is a bit of a perfectionist and so she just did not enjoy the struggle of early reading. We definitely did some Bob books and some other early readers. I am a librarian and one thing I have noticed is that level readers can really really vary. My first readers are great
because they're perfect for brand new readers but often a level one can be a challenge for new readers, some level ones are very challenging.

Ah!! You bring up such an interesting point I didn't even think about it-- it definitely had to do with being a perfectionist (oh jeez, she probably got it from me). She really didn't want to read until she knew she could do it well... And yes, I agree, you have to be ready for level 1's, they can be tricky! Thank you so much for this thoughtful note!! xoxo Elle

Tess is reading so well! 💖 You have to teach your Kid to read at home in the US? They don't learn that at school?
