Henry made many reforms within England. He gave more rights to the peasants, enforced English being used by the nobles and his soldiers were given good wages. Henry’s taxes to fund the war was surprisingly very popular among the people of England. Henry was seen as a national hero by the people of the time and he gave his people English pride.

I had no idea who Henry V was until I saw Kenneth Branagh’s magnificent film version of Shakespeare’s play of Henry V (1989). It’s so much better than The King on Netflix. After seeing the film I wanted to learn everything that I could about Henry. His death was one of those great hinges of history. If he’d lived there’s a good likelihood that France would now be part of the British Commonwealth. Think about that. Plus England’s history would’ve probably been different because Henry VI, his son, might have had other brothers who could’ve ruled in his place when he suffered from a catatonic state (inherited from his French grandfather Charles VI who died insane). As a result there probably wouldn’t have been the Wars of the Roses and Henry VII, Henry VI’s relative from Henry VI’s mother’s second marriage/relationship with Owen Tudor, would not have been born. There’d be no Tudor dynasty. All of the things that we now take for granted concerning the histories of England and France would’ve been so totally different if Henry V would’ve lived longer. Wow!

Love this man. My favourite historical figure and favourite king of England too, I've read that many in France was deeply saddened by his passing as he had brought much needed stability to France, he from what I know told his men and other nobility and knights to treat the French people with kindness and help them which was a brilliant political move as then with the people behind him they'd be a lot more open to the idea of an English King being king of both England & France. I really want to see another remake of this video as you did with the video on Edward III, I loved it, was brilliant. Thank you as always, I always find myself coming back to this to scrub up on my knowledge of England's greatest King (in my humble opinion) 😊

Henry V was one hell of an impressive king, a man who was a tactical genius and was a focused, well-educated and extremely dynamic king whose ambitions and military prowess would make William the Conqueror blush, he was a ruthless pragmatist who would achieve victory by any means necessary. Ultimately, Henry V's greatest failure was that he died young so he couldn't secure his conquest. Under him, England became the most important and most powerful kingdom in Christendom. He was a hero to the English and a monster to the French and I'd argue that both sides have a good reason to view him the way they do. But as quickly as his Lancastrian Empire came, it went away under his son.

I could go on for hours listing all his great things and achievements. Surprisingly, he was also loved by all his brothers and they were all loyal to him which was strange, during the Middle Ages brothers normally fought each other for power. Just look at France at that time, the Armagnacs and Burgundian feuds began between two brothers allowing England to take the initiative. Henry’s brother Humphrey was said to have idolised him. Henry’s reign really did show the centralisation he wanted within his country and how he wanted what was best for the nation not in a feudal way.

In fact, actual historical analysis of records of the day indicates that Henry's forces were not so heavily outnumbered, about 9,000 English to 12,000 French, so after the deaths of so many French during the battle Henry had as many if not more men than the surviving French. It appears Henry acted as he did out of fear because of his own tenuous and insecure hold on power, not because of any military necessity. So much of the history that was written on both sides tended to justify Henry and/or condemn the eastern French Armagnan forces that fought that day by their political foes in France, the western Burgundians.

Considering the complexity of players and events in your dense biographies, a one page summary of names, events, dates (aka cheat sheet) between “Acts” of the story could reinforce our learning. They could also include your lessons from history (kings who pick fights with their noblemen don’t last). Your discrete/subtle insertion of background music is welcome. It may not have been the way things were done, but just think about it. You're leading an army that is outnumbered AT LEAST 3 to 1. You have more prisoners captured than you do men in your entire army. First off, if those prisoners were to rise up, they could cause massive damage to your army. Which in turn would lead to the remaining French forces remobilizing with a very big chance of crushing what remains of your army. You have 2 choices, let what I just said happen, or be the "bad guy" for a minute and put your prisoners to death.
Personally, if I have an ENTIRE KINGDOM, let alone my army, depending on me and what decisions I make, it may be a hard decision, but I WILL do what is best for the over all cause. Henry V did what he had to do to win Agincourt. And just look, he is now considered one of the greatest warrior kings England has ever known. If he would have lived things would be so different. Hell, if his son, Henry VI would have been a better king, not weak with mental problems, the world would be very different.

Henry V wasn't criticized by his contemporaries, which says a lot about the situation. Also, there is some evidence that Henry didn't order the execution of the prisoners but some of his men misunderstood (it was a chaotic situation after all) and killed some of the prisoners by burning the house they were in.

And hits to the face were quite common, the difference is for prince Harry, they organized a surgeon after the battle (during the battle, they simply broke the shaft of the arrow) which developed a technique to get to the arrowhead and put him out... others would have died days or weeks later out of infection
And considering the protection of plate armour and how he was hit, it wasn‘t a straight shot to the face (rather a ricochet arrow from another’s plate armour or helmet) or else the arrow would have gone complete through the skull and he would be instantly dead

@@kensebego199 Welllll.... that's disputed. On the Bayeux Tapestry, where it says "King Harold died", there are 2 soldiers: one with an arrow in his eye, & another lying down. The second fits with accounts of him being knocked down & hacked to bits, & his body being unrecognisable, so his mistress Edith of the Swan Neck had to identify him. @sneksnekitsasnek the Normans and others were Christian at this point and men cut their hair short with knives and crude scissors (not invented yet) both to resemble monks and for practical reasons.

Everyone says The King has inaccuracies, which is true, but what movie about history doesn’t? The movie makers knew what they were doing. They put those inaccuracies in the movie to make it more appeasing to audience. The King isn’t about the events that happened when Henry became king, its about Henry’s journey as a person, which is why it’s called “The King”.

I haven't seen "The King" yet, but I do know a bit about English history (and military history in general). It would appear that Henry at times resorted to a "total war" approach. While he didn't go all out (think Sherman's march), he did flout convention when it was necessary to advancing his aim. At Agincourt he realized there was no way his troops could deal with the outnumbering hostages, so he had to neutralize the threat. The mark of a great general is having to make hard split decisions on the battlefield.

I disliked this video because there are too many inconsistencies. I'm an avid military historian and I can confirm that the longbowmans taunts using the V sign in french battles predated even 13th century French-British battles. The more I listened to the battle of agincourt and his description I knew he was either making it up or confusing himself with another military conflict somewhere else..... the crusades maybe.

@Von Staufenberg The narrator said Edward VI's "sons, Edward & Richard, would, ACCORDING TO SOME, be murdered in the Tower of London under the order of Edward VI's brother Richard, who then took the English throne as the infamous Richard III." I don't know about your other points, but as you said the narrator didn't get the facts straight, I thought I'd point out that they didn't *state* it as fact in this particular case. I agree, I don't think the narrator's an expert historian, but there are much, MUCH worse history videos online!

You could say the English French dukes from Anjou used Anglo Saxon blood to pursue their aims. The Norman (Vikings) also secured land in Ireland and ensured centuries of conflict between England and Ireland. It’s just the way you want to see it. Anyway Henry’s victories were soon reversed.

I wouldn't be here if Henry V wouldn't have died. I am a descendant of Catherine of Valois and Owen Tudor.. crazy to think about!

It's too bad they left the arrow to the face out of "the king." Maybe a little opening backstory in the movie could have helped explain that he had a warrior backround.
