whole challenge of this level really is routing out the level, because some shrinking platforms need to be there otherwise you cant get back to where the star spawns!!! this is 100% staying in world s
I think the "skybox" is actually just one of the gravity switch fields that appear in the normal game, positioned under the peak of Mario's jump height. So anything that send you upwards at or above Mario's jump height-such as Mario bouncing upwards off of lava/fire-would put Mario in the field and change gravity to up.
its the flipsville skybox with a giant invisible black hole above you that appears when you jump so you can still go up as far as you want as long as you dont jump

Sling/launch stars do something like that with their sound effects too, it's a recurrent little detail on Mario games
