This was so fun to listen to. I was an au pair for three years with five different families, and I've got to say the kids are rarely the ones to cause issues - it's always the parents! It sounds like you had such an uncomfortable living situation. I was fired by one family, and being able to leave was quite a relief, even though I loved the child. When it doesn't work, it really doesn't work!
mauve!! i love this! im 18 and recently moved to budapest for six months and didnt love it. knowing that you lived abroad again after this experience makes me feel so excited to try again! always so grateful for you and your content :)
You should definitely try again if the feeling strikes! Living abroad is tough but very rewarding because it often challenges you to find new solutions and paths. In my experience my life in a new place never looked like what I imagined (which I loved), and the longer I stayed, the further it got from my idea of things, until it came around the other side and coalesced into something wonderful (if that makes sense)! Or, more coherently, this Anais Nin quote: Throw your dreams into space like a kite, and you do not know what it will bring back: a new life, a new friend, a new love, a new country 💜
If it makes you feel better, there was an episode of Super Nanny where a family had overloaded their kids with activities. Jo, aka super nanny, came is and had the parents cut the number activities back because the kids were always cranky and tired because they had no down time and were up late doing homework. So you were right to let the kids go to bed when they were tired. Sleep deprivation is terrible and seriously affects a child’s development. Overloading a child’s schedule to the point of exhaustion will only hurt them in the long run.
Thanks for pointing this out! At the time I was working on gut instinct but I'm glad to hear there are others who agree, and it's definitely a decision I would stand by if I am a parent one day 💜
I love your story times, especially this one 🥰 I find au pairing fascinating. I was so into the story that I wanted to know about the rest of your time in China! I’d love for another story time about that, if you were comfortable sharing ☺️🤍
I’m about 10 minutes in and these parents sound like they were trying to maintain a perfect image. However, trying to control and use ever single minute of the day is TERRIBLE in the long run, especially for kids. Down time is important for all people, especially for kids!
I love your story times, I’ve been rewatching so many of them while I write my dissertation. Definitely my favourite videos along with your hair clipping videos 🥰. Hope you’re having a lovely day
Ok so you're a native English speaker, functionally fluent in Spanish, and have some command of Mandarin 😳 That is impressive. I am not multilingual... I'm not even certain I'm unilingual. Consistently semilingual at best. It's mostly hand gestures and grunts a lot of the time.
I was able to relate to this SO much! I talked about it in videos before too, I was an au pair in the US and it wasn’t a bad as your experience sounded like but definitely related with not really thinking about living with them and also being a very independent person I found it super difficult especially when you can’t relate to the parents! And I agree you basically make no money, work way too much and are dependent on the parents. I also wanted to live in a different country and experience a new culture. I totally get you! Also learned a lot from it as well, thank you for sharing this I loved the lofi as well 💗
This was really interesting! And I’m sorry your bosses were like that. I’ve been watching your videos for about a year without commenting and just wanted to say as well you have such a nice way of storytelling and speaking
Obviously glad it didn’t end like the movie but some of this craziness sounds like parasite lol! I was f!red too in the last year in a somewhat similar situation and it was definitely very humiliating and awkward but also a huge relief. I’m a couple years out of college now and doing a bunch of random jobs trying to find my way, and I really love your videos/hearing about your life. Knowing that you were also in this situation and still have been able to have other jobs/move on/build such a full and beautiful life is very encouraging! Thanks for your stories and all your vids!! 💕🌸
This entire story felt like a movie! Weird vibes all around 😵💫. It’s always so interesting to look back on our experiences after a significant chunk of time has passed. Thank you for sharing ❤️❤️❤️
Loveeeed this story time! I had to rewatch like 5 times because I kept falling asleep 🤣 I needed to know the ending!!! Please do more story times! Sooo tingly and interesting 👏
Mauve story time? What a delight. I am so grateful to be able to “visit” Paris through you, Ms Mauve. Your looking ravishing as ever; and such tingles, unintentional like two girls gossiping abs catching up
En mí caso estoy estudiando Cantonés por que (y deseo mucho) viajar a Hong Kong, probar que onda, y quedarme a vivir. Tu historia me gustó mucho y me dio más ganas de vivir en Asia. :)
With the right family, I think it would be a great experience! I would just be aware that you don't have much independence or a life of your own (at least in the way mine was set up), which was not something I realized when I accepted the job. And that's okay! I learned a lot 😂
Don't be nervous if it's something you feel called to do! My mistake was not being honest with myself that au pairing in general was probably not the best fit for me and especially not under the terms set by this family -- I had almost zero independence, and that drove me crazy, but that's not necessarily the case for everyone, either bc the family situation is different or bc the au pair's tolerance is different 💜

Agreed! Also happy to hear you were able to find relief in getting fired, just like me 😂

You've got such a diverse life experience. Really looking forward for more stories like this.

I almost woke up my daughter chuckling at this 😅

I did type China; idk why it changed it lol
It’s a shame that they couldn’t be up front with you about it. I’m also sad to hear that you and the kids got along so well and it all fell apart
This video is absolutely amazing. I'm so intrigued by you
So glad you liked it! Thank you!
How does one person have so many interesting things to talk about 👀
Just a weirdo who makes the occasional poor decision! 😅
Wow! What a story! Very interesting.
Mauve you are so adventurous! But omg what an intense family 😳 sheesh
En mí caso estoy estudiando Cantonés por que (y deseo mucho) viajar a Hong Kong, probar que onda, y quedarme a vivir. Tu historia me gustó mucho y me dio más ganas de vivir en Asia. :)
thank youuu, this was very interesting :)) especially bc i was thinking of being an au pair to practice my french!

This is such a good story really interesting
Loved the storytime!
Thank you! So glad you liked it
I wanted to do an Au pair gig abroad but now I’m kinda nervous. Especially across the world in a language I’m not fully versed in.

Fascinating story! At one point I found myself nodding my head at you in agreement (as if you could see me haha) I was so into it :D
Aw haha thank you Debs! So glad you liked this one 💜💜
