A Surprising Duo: Rolex Submariner 14060M & Tudor Pelagos 39

  • The peculiar vibe of the Rolex Submariner 14060 may be absent within the present catalog of Rolex sports watches, but that doesn’t mean it’s not out there in other more modern watches. In fact, you don’t have to stray far from the family to find such a candidate. Tudor has managed to capture a lot of the charm of early Rolex references in recent years, and one in particular strikes me as a perfect embodiment of what I love about 5 digit Subs, and that is the Pelagos 39.

I have the 14060M. Bought from Pride and Pinion. I find it a very light and comfortable watch. It is my first Rolex. My dream set would be this and the bluesy for special occasions, but that requires some extra savings. For me, I’ve always bought a new watch upon receiving a promotion or new job. I have gone through Casio, Citizen, Seiko, Tag Heuer and finally made it to a Submariner.

Cashed in on my 2007 14060M, and replaced it with a BB58 Blue and now recently a Pelagos 39 as well. Agree that Pelagos is very much the watch that should replaced 14060 instead of 114060. The maxi case is a big no go imo.

This is the comparison I didn't know we needed, but we definitely did. I did not realize these two were so close in size. I think it says more about what the Tudor offers to say it's not necessarily worth the price jump to the Rolex than it is a knock against the Submariner 14060M. Knowing the size is so similar to to vintage Sub honestly does have me more interested. I also like that the Pelagos is bit closer to 40 than 39. I haven't had the fortunate of finding a Pelagos 39 in stock at my AD yet, but I'm going to reach out to my sales guy to let me know if they get one in. I am potentially really interested if they come out with a blue version this year, but I want to get it on wrist. I've always been attracted to the Tudor Sub 9401, and that would be a worry free modern equivalent at a much more affordable price.

Owned a Rolex for 15 years, recently bought a Tudor Pelagos 39. It's a fantastic tool. The finishing on the Rolex is finer, but the innovation on offer with the Tudor leaves Rolex behind. Lumed bezel, titanium, T-fit...
In my collection the P39 is my tool, and the Rolly is my jewel. The Tudor is more forward thinking and in my opinion a better tool, the Rolex feels more special, better quality, but lacks some of the benefits of the innovative features.
There is no dive watch that I'd personally choose over the Tudor Pelagos 39 currently. The full package is unrivalled for my needs, however the titanium does scratch easily and the finishing falls just short of Rolex.
Hope this helps anybody considering one!

Full disclosure, I'm a big Tudor fanboy. I've had the Pelagos LHD, the previous generation of the Ranger and currently own the BB GMT, BB Bronze (1st Gen) and now the P39. I was so worried the P39 would be too small on my wrist but the bezel sizes it to close to 40mm. I'd tried the BB58 but that feels smaller as the eye is drawn inwards - the P39 draws the eye outward. The P42 is a real BIG watch - very very slab sided - I loved it but it's not the easiest watch to live with.
Tudor also has the issue that they tend to be thicker watches than Rolex (although this is now changing - the case design on the BB GMT is very clever at hiding the height) - at 11.8mm thick and with the bezel pulling the watch to near 40mm it's just brilliant to wear.
So within tudor the P39 hits the sweet spot - doing everything just about right. I'd always wondered about the comparison to the sub - so this video is perfect. The watches are so close in size and it really does feel like a sliding doors moment where the Sub carried on one path and the P39 took a fork in the road. Now I look down at my wrist and I have no desire for a Sub at all, if they'd called this a "Tudor Submariner" there would be waiting lists for the next 2 years.
Yes, the marketing is terrible - this really is a tool watch. It's also quite perfect is almost every way.
Now all I need is for the Ranger to just be a BIT better and my explorer itch will be scratched ;-)

It's definitely a modern day 5 digit reference sub with up to date build quality but I can't help but think that the "Pelagos" name should have been used on a modern reinterpretation of the 16600 - A little bit more chunkier and masculine and made out of titanium would be the ultimate watch. It's a spot on comparison with the 14060m - A modern day version of it for those that actually use their watches. Tudor have been recreating the magic minus the jangle on their 39mm range - bb58 (6538 - 5512), bb pro (1655 - 16570) and now P39 (14060m - 16610). They're catering for those of us who want new 5 digit references. They should have been ballsy and called it Sub.

I have a 2-line 14060m, and it is the one watch that keeps me from buying a lot of newer dive watches. This is a great comparison! I love the jangly bracelet and the classic styling, while also loving the fact that it has a great robust movement in the 3130. It's the perfect watch for me. Plus, I was able to get mine several years back after a series of trades, so my entry cost is significantly cheaper than what the modern cost is these days.

Awesome video! I have the two liner 14060m 06 model. You cannot go wrong with either a two liner or four liner. I like the unsigned rehaut better as it goes with older vintages but that is merely preference. Either one is one hundred percent a winner. I would get the Tudor Pelagos 39 in a heartbeat if not for the 14060m. Also, I like the bracelets better on the old sub than the newer. Al thought jingly jangly it is more comfortable than the newer model subs. I am sure the titanium Pelagos is a dream to wear.

Like the comment below, I sold my 114060 at the height of sanity and do not miss it. Recently also purchased the Pelagos 39 and I also love it.
With watches like this, Sinn U50, Serica 5303, etc., a ceramic sub seems so boring to me.... most will argue, until they wear one and actually do stuff while wearing it. You'll see that these new subs are made to look pretty under boutique lights, appealing to overweight dudes with golden cuban link chains.
A good comparison is with motorcycles, although I love Ducati, I once heard that the Japanese sport bikes have large mirrors to look for cops - while Ducatis mirrors are small and stylish becuase Ducati riders use their mirrors to check their hair pommade. Rolex is the Ducati mirror.

Cool and interesting analysis. I’d propose a slightly different pair - pre 2010 Sea Dweller and the Pelagos 39. That gives you a dedicated deep dive watch, and something that is part Submariner, part tool watch and transitions well to casual wear.

  • @anthonystevens8683
    @anthonystevens8683 ปีที่แล้ว

Very well presented Blake. I have to agree with your comments on the Pelagos 39. It's a light weight tool watch that takes some cues from some of the older Submariner references. It isn't a copy though as you mention, it's more of a divergence of the design for a dive watch. I also like there this isn't a 'which is best?' video but more of these are the differences and decide for yourself and decide what your preference would be as we're all different. Many thanks for sharing your thoughts.

The pre ceramic subs and GMTs look so much better than the ceramic ones. The modern rolexes have lugs that are still far too thick and destroys the classic shape. I also find it funny that rolex has been sizing up their watches at a time when everyone else has been sizing them down. Rolex should go back to the original case shape and size but obviously keep the updated bracelet/clasp and the ceramic bezel. It'd be the perfect watch.

    • @fifaboy18

The 41mm sub is really only 40.5mm. 0.3mm bigger than the 40mm maxi subs and less than 1mm larger than the Pelagos 39 (which is really 39.6mm). But it wears better than the 40mm maxi case imo. Even though it's the same thickness as the Pelagos 39, it appears thinner on the wrist because of its slim case flank. The slab-sidedness of the Pelagos makes it appear thicker. Now, I agree with you about 41mm sub clasp. It should have stayed the same size. It's certainly not a deal breaker, but I don't like that it's bulkier. Side by side, the footprints of the 41mm sub and the Pelagos 39 are nearly identical. So, I respectfully disagree. The biggest difference for me is that the Pelagos appears less flashy and more tool like, which I love. To each their own.

@@Thankyou_3I respectfully disagree. I'm a big Omega fan, I've owned several, and currently own the new Speedy, which I adore. I've tried the newer Seamasters and they definitely wear more "clunky" than the Sub. I used to own the Omega 2254 (before Omega introduced the coaxial 2500 and 8800, they used a thinner ETA-based 1120 movement) which was a joy to wear on the wrist. Very elegant, super thin. The newer Seamasters are terrific watches but they just don't wear as well as the new Sub does. Tim Mosso does a lovely comparison video of the two watches over on @WatchboxReviews where he comes to the same conclusion. Clunky and unrefined aren't words i would use to describe either watch to be honest. However, I will concede that the clasp on the new sub could be a mm or two smaller.

Not at all interested in Rolex. At a push I’d opt for the Tudor. Other than that, both look dull, but if the pretentious, status chasing zombies like them, then that’s okay by me.

I really don’t think they look pretentious… quite the opposite imo.

Have them both, and love them each for different reasons. I agree with your embracement of the four lines of text. I’ve also considered myself in the minority for appreciating such egregious overkill. Between the two, I still prefer the submariner, for its wrist presence and refulgent glow. I feel a little guilty for having both, as they are, indeed, so similar. Nevertheless, they are both brilliant watches, and in my opinion, worth every penny.
