I've been having dreams of traveling to another galaxy. One curiously shaped like a skull. Within it, I was told, would be the last thing to save Humanity...
I’m not surprised, as dreams use your subconscious and skulls are usually subconsciously used to signify death. You probably have just been watching too many movies/TH-cam videos, similar to how people will play a game a lot then dream about it
You really have to wonder how this effected any potential civilizations in both of those galaxies. Imagine being one of those aliens and going through that. While this 'Skull Galaxy' is pretty horrifying when you put it in a cosmic perspective, it's also a brilliant opportunity to see just how two almost equally large galaxies would merge. Frightening and fantastic at the same time!
When you say that it takes a few billion years, it actually might be sooner, as we may not see it for a few billion years, but the galaxys will collide as long before we see it as far it is away, because light can only travel so fast

The 2 galaxys will most likely not flatten out into a disk shaped Galaxy. The 2 galaxys are close enough to each other in size, that the result will most likely be an elliptical Galaxy.
