39:53 casually pushing a dragster in the background whilst responding to people saying it will never end up in a car is WILD
Yeah, what a coincidence, just when he's talking about the fact that this engine will end in something.
SOOOO SICK!!!!!
It would make a great drag racer engine. That HP is almost useless lol
wow nothing gets past you guys!
LETSS GOOOOO !!!!!!
2 ROB DAHM VIDEOS 1 WEEK. ITS A MIRACLE!
And now we wait two months for the next part
not only, its also back to back O.O
You should thanks the 12 rotors...!😎👍🏻
What a beautiful thing to wake up to!
The END is coming soon.
so many comments like "incompetence" or "you dont know what youre doing" but all im seeing is a 12 rotor triple turbo fully bespoke motor RUNNING....you guys are insane lol this is so awesome
He is incompetent and he doesn't know what he's doing. Fortunately, he's hired at least a couple guys who do know what they're doing.
I guess with a small loan of a few million dollars, even Jeff Bezos can get a rocket into space.
It's the same crowd that went "where's the four rotor" for years, they just need something new to get upset about
@@j00semane Lol, deleted my comment cuz his feewings got owwies.
Yeah I wanna see the ones talking nonsense I wanna see your triple turbo 12 rotor…. Oh wait I can’t because there is only 1 and you’re looking at it…. And trying to tell the one that’s been playing with it for over a year how to work on it. When you have only seen what maybe 10 videos of it maybe…. Arrogance on the internet kills me.
What if you put it in the back off a truck
-Loctite 515 has a .001" gap performance, we use it to mate industrial gearbox halves without messing with the bearing's outer race squeeze and internal clearance. The bearing bores are bored with the box bolted together dry and clean, so you don't want a thick material.
-RTV is like .004-.006" gap performance, so I wonder if the RTV was causing the tightness in the side-clearance.
-I would recommend 515 for the intake port side-wear face sealant.
This or Loctite 574. Cures in absence of air so any access material squished out the sides will be washed away by fuel/oil. This is what old Porsches use to seal close fitting parts, eg the crank girdle and oil pump on a 944.
@@TtimWh use the 574 on two piece rear main seals to seal the bearing cap on the 4.0 jeeps as well.
Wow, yes, now this is a guy well seasoned in his field of experience 👏
@@TtimWh 574 does seem better especially for automotive. 515 we used exclusively on oil filled gearboxes, it’s also anaerobic.
I was going to suggest 518 and get rid of the o-rings. It would be a paint to get apart, but it would seal.
Being a machinist for 20+ years, I appreciate you showing the technical side of everything. Love it
I love the perfect timing... "You guy's say it's never going to be put in anything"... Drag chassis being pushed past... Just epic!!! 😂
I was one of the ones to say it'll never go into anything and I apologize for that. I bet it feels amazing to get it running like that. Nice job!
2 guys pushing that chasis giving out obvious hints lmao
NOTHING TO SEE HERE! PLEASE DISPERSE! NOTHING TO SEE HERE! GO ON ABOUT YOUR BUSINESS!....
I could see that thing on a dirt pull tractor!
Absolute cinema
What a mad genius rob has become, I'm honored to see his journey over the last 6+ years.
bro, is crazy how he was just a regular car guy, and start becoming a madman of a engine researcher, kinda like the gale banks of Rotory enigne.
Agreed the connections he's made with both people and companies. The support he has gathered is great. And he never stops learning.
Same here man. I started watching around the time he got this shop and getting to see everything happen since then has been absolutely insane! So glad I got one of the signed shirts years ago when he did that. It’s been such a cool progression to watch.
I remember his earliest videos like 12-13 years ago! He's had such a crazy journey that is far from over.
Rob is LOCKING IN.
Seems like you’re really stepping into your fullest brother, you’re an inspiration!
Hello we need you to step your fullest too :)
You watch Rob?!?
Meme daddy on a Rotor daddy comment section 😩
Really love this video - showed the "glory" moments first and then the "how we got there" debrief could be properly, patiently enjoyed and appreciated. What an epic motor.
I think the start first thing is before they tore it down and machined the rotors.
@@fryloc359 It literally says "3 days ago" in the video :D
I remember seeing this thing running back in 08 when it was built, it's wild to see it running, fuel injected, and casually sporting 3 massive turbos. This thing is definitely in the right hands, and I'm glad to see Rob and the team coming so far, learning so much, and doing so much awesome shit. You guys deserve the success, we've seen how much dedication and hard work you've poured into the channel!
TWO VIDEOS IN 48 HOURS - THIS IS THE ROB DAHM I LOVE
And we are at the engine dyno right now haha
@@RobDahmall i can say is i was here
also please don't blow the welds off the intake (imagine they add nitrous to this contraption)
@@RobDahmdo you think this thing would be suitable for a mid engine pikes peak project? Hypothetically of course 😏
@RobDahm all 3 exhaust merged into one?? I'd imagine that sound would be unbelievable!
@@RobDahm 3 Videos in 3 days?!
I love how the entire crew gets credit and gets to be on camera. This is a team, and a great team of talented folks. It must be a blast to work there :).
This isn’t just Rob Dahm’s project, but Rob Dahm and his incredible team’s project. From the cameraman capturing all the important bits holding steady despite all the crazy fumes, the CNC programmer, to the beautifully welded manifolds by the amazing welder, etc.. Everyone masterfully contributed their part and more. What an awesome team Rob has assembled here. It’s so cool seeing this channel grow from the beginning to now with such a great cast now. Y’all are amazing and should be damn proud of yourselves.
It’s so much more fun as a team. My name is on the channel I dont need the ego boost. I love being around smart people willing to try dumb things. Makes good memories
@@RobDahm "Try dumb things" is something all smart people should be willing to do. If it's dumb but it works, it ain't dumb.
@@RobDahmlove what u do 🤘 always watch your video’s 🙏 that 12 rotor is a dream come true ✅
18:14 The fact that you all tore this thing down after that and then got it back together in 72 hours or whatever it was is truly amazing 🤘
stupid here, wasn't this a boat engine? whats the realistic goal for it on a track? is it actually going to be able to launch and mush the tires cause i know those top fuel engines are like 10k+hp
@@Wumbo-z4zit was originally supposed to go to SEMA as just an engine for everyone to see that a 12 rotor is indeed possible. Rob did mention something about it into a car in a past video
@@Wumbo-z4zTyson built it for use in a race boat many many years ago, but it never got used in a boat.
Rob will put it in a drag car, trying to beat the rotary drag pass record.
Should perform similar to 4000-5000hp Promods.
These videos were probably taking over a months time
Hi, Rob, I had a 12A I put in a TR7 back in the 80’s. I made a carb adapter to mount a Holley 425 CFM. I removed the oil injection and ran 1000:1 Amsoil 2-stroke in the gas tank. 1 3/4 ounce to 12 gallons of gas and I never had a starting problem after I did that. I drove it four 6 years before I did a booboo. I put Prestone Super Radiator Cleaner in the cooling system. After 10 hours it ate all the o-rings in the engine. That was the end of that car. At one point I moved to California and had to take it through DEQ. It failed emissions but just barely. I opened the hood and the inspector’s eyes turned into saucers! He yells “Hey Frank, you gotta see this”. They said it almost passed for the original 4 cylinder and had they tested it for the RX3 that the engine originally came out of, it would have been the cleanest rotary engine ever tested. The car would hit between 160 and zero…meaning the speedometer needle would bounce between the max 160Mph and the zero pin. The car got 16 MPG kinda sucky for a TR7 but for the amount of HP that rotary put out, I think it was pretty good!
Starting the first time on on Christmas with half the rotors sounded super gnarly, almost v8 choppy. Now with all 12 rotors working, it sounds really smooth, and healthy. I like it. Never though “elegant” and “12 rotors” would go so well together
I love that Rob started the video with no BS, just right to the start up and idle
Wouldn't it have been nicer with a 30 minute wiring video to start instead? Lol
Rob, because of you. I am currently signed up for a machining program at my local community College and am waiting for the course to start in... 4 months 😂. The fact that you bought a professional level cnc machine, with no knowledge on how to use it. Just to machine a part THE NEXT DAY just to prove a point, is amazing and inspirational. Thank you for being you. Also I'd like to point out that you end videos the same way the the sopranos ended the series and I love it. Just cut off mid sen- 😂 im guessing 5300hp.
good luck for the program! I hope you have good teacher that really wants people to understand and learn. I had teacher who gave lessons on tig welding and i turned out good and got welders qualifications in most challenging welding position and B/C letters on my papers in few weeks of welding with the teacher
Make sure you do good in electronics. And prob do an electrician class too for elec vehicles solid start then in time good transition.
39:50 just casually moving a drag car across the background... I see where this is going and I'm all for it :D
Make sure when you steal comments to change the wording
Love to see it
No. Feckin. Way. This guy's ambitions are insane! From indy cars, to 4 rotors, 3 rotors, multiple 2 rotors, formula mazda, and now a rotary dragster?! (A Wenkster?)
I am ecstatic to see all of these projects complete, and how far you'll take it
The amount of confidence / experience / knowledge accumulated in this brain is something.
Machining the rotors, finding minuscule traces and understanding how and why it affects the engine, modifying it in a quick & dirty way, assembling and firing it back up.
Seriously this guy became insanely good at rotary engines. But he still mixes polarity in his wiring 🤣
I really appreciated the 2nd part of the video showing HOW you got it running. That's knowledge for us all. 👍
I've never owned, worked on, or been driven in a vehicle with a rotary engine....and this is my favorite series on youtube. I've shown tons of people.
What amazing me is how smooth the engine is. No rattling or vibrating around....just pure rotary smoothness, even with 12 rotors!
There is a legendary video from the original engine designer like 15 years ago where he puts a glass of water on the engine and it’s still as a lake
The more Doritos/Pistons you have, the smoother it gets, because the timing can be evenly distributed and vibrations cancel out each other. You can perform neurosurgery on this one
"It's never gonna be put into anything" *suspiciously 12 rotor sized hole in dragster rolls by*
9:07 Rob's mind says "What is th?! Oh it's just the ceiling, perfect! Keep going."
Makes me wonder if eventually the room the engine is in gonna limit the engine by the air it has available XD
That's what air mover's are for like whenever you Dyno a car
@ Ye but dyno often in smaller room. I mean this was big garage with engine at door opening. And still the whole room felt the pressure change. It pretty huge if ask me.
Not gonna lie, i'm pretty happy to be able to say "yeah i followed the twelve rotor build at the time" when we talk about witnessing major moment in motorsport. I wish i seen group B with my own eyes, i'm sure in the future there's gonna be people regretting not seeing this as it was happening. You sir deserve all the respect we can put on your name. Bravo.
Rob, that shot at 6:42 showing the condensation from the exhaust being blown out - really a small touch but SO cool - you're not the only one amazed by how much moisture is condensing!
I could be wrong, but something gives me the impression thats not the first time robs jumped onto 3 giant shafts on camera before. LoL using joels level of excitement as an indicator i can confidently say thats not even the biggest shaft Rob has played with this weekend. Im super jealous the dirty things id actually do for s 3 rotor... congrats to you, and the team brother!
Hearing this thing running, ive been following this build for years since it started, and oh my god it sounds EVIL
39:28 I vote that this is how Rob should have his hair at all times. We shall call it the Dahm.
😂
Watching the oil pump belt hang on for dear life lol
Sparks underneath oil pump at 8:05 , belt needs a idler , EPIC performance though 👌 💪💪💯👏
I was just gonna say that lol
I noticed that the belt needs an tensioner
Bump
I saw that too and came down here to say the same thing.
Dudes, gotta say, i always been scared of Rotary motors, but i learned tons from you all. you guys are bad asses. Plain and simple. Bravo.
Dude, that is so awesome to see it from Parts all over the shop to what it is now unbelievable!!!!! Love the Cummins running in the background!!!!
Rob, you need to get yourself a decent set of micrometers. Yor calipers are not going to give you the accuracy you need when measuring 0.00X. Also, consider 3D printing some masking plugs so that you aren't filling all of the ports with the MR 5009 during assembly.
I agree 100% Caliper is not for thousands, micrometer is
@@eiccaw There are cheap digital calipers that can measure down to ten thous.
I second that micrometers are a must for precision.
@@rdizzy1 Can you really trust those if you want accuracy? You want name brand and trusted qualification of accuracy
@@Hnkka Yes, as much as anything. Accurate within 5 ten thous. Perfectly fine if working with thousandths.
That oil pump belt needs a tensioner asap
ya, flirting with a disaster there.
Or a shorter belt.
Or conversion to chain
@@marinesole2There is a reason they don’t run chains on any of those external oil pumps. A belt is far better, and safer.
Yep that thing caught my attention way to much.
"I'm scared to rev it!"
How high did you go?
"7000 thousand"
The look on the Asian guys face lol
That's nothing for a rotary lol
.
Now my factory 400 chevy SB.... different story (pistons in orbit)
Thanks for showing all the details of the fantastic rotary engine ❤
I'm an engineer from Germany, I really love the rotary engines - but your 12 rotor is mind blowing 😎
So glad u got this motor. So glad you are sharing the journey. Mad props.
the subtle drag car being pushed while talking about dynoing it lol
I love the 2 guys pushing the dragster in the background. "In the business, we call this foreshadowing." :D
Dank
i love the foreshadowing at the end with the drag car in the background 💀
When you are feeling a bit down, there is nothing more consuming, or smile inducing than Robs excitement, problem solving and vison, and the audible perfection that is one of his creations coming together. Thank you for brightening my day Rob and the Crew! 🤘🏼
Been waiting to see the update after getting to meet you and hear about it in person last week in Huston. By far the most memorable and exciting part was meeting rob and getting to talk about this build with him
Rob you are a magician, I have been following you for some time, before you started with this 12Rotor motor.
I did my first 13B turbo around 1984 with a Electromotive ECU and had to work from scratch as you are doing. Really appreciate what you are doing. Well done so far. Big things still lay ahead,
from the days of being roasted by rob #2 to being one of the most innovative car channels on youtube. here's to another milestone achievement king
The Rob lore runs deep
I will never stop loving the hard cuts away when Rob is still talking, makes me chuckle every time
that 12 rotor is a beast of an engine, in about every way you can concieve.
it's huge, it makes a mountain of power, and with all that hardware it's gonna be heavy AF as well.
putting that into a drag/rail car is really gonna test the car and engine.. and wheelie bars, which I should hope are put on as well.
I have been fascinated by this engine ever since I saw it on YT years ago. Excited to see what it does.
40:00 bros already got an idea of a top fuel dragster build
I'm glad I'm not the only one who saw that.... 👀👀👀👀
how tf did bro already watch it vid aint even 40 min old mans watched it in 2 times speed
It’s going in a dragster…..INSANE!!!!
It's going to sound incredible, like a dragster and rotary had a baby
Still think he should have built a funny car with it
As I've been watching this come together, all the while wondering, "What will this monster even fit into?" ... it all becomes perfectly clear at the end! PERFECT!
Yup. Rob once mentioned it was designed to go in a boat, where you have an unlimited supply of cold water. In a car, he would need to have walls of radiators to dissipate all that heat…
… unless the engine only runs for 10 seconds at a time.
A dragster was the obvious answer for some land-based vehicle.
@flabreque i was so sad when I heard him talking about the boat. Like it would've been cool but I so badly wanted to see this thing try to put power to the ground it's gonna be insane
I’ve waited a year for this moment. I actually made my wife sit through and watch last night’s video, hoping for a payoff at the end. Needless to say the remote found a new home block and a half down the street after last night’s video ended. I can’t believe I got to see it run today, thank you so much Rob. It’s been a very long year. ❤😂
Brother, I could smell the exhaust through the monitor.
That's not just an Engine. Y'all made a piece of Art here.
Thanks for sharing this very unique journey
Thanks for sharing this experience with us. Great work from you and your team!
0:00 “we’ve hooked up Patrick Star” absolutely hilarious 🤣
It's alive!
Initially I speculated that when it runs it’ll sound like Satan stubbing his toe. But no, this is him falling from heaven. “Like lightning”
Never knew aerosol Hylomar existed, learned something new today, going to get myself a can as I use Hylomar and Permatex #2 on a variety of things. Having it in spray form will save time and make application easier. Thanks for the tip! The top fuel rail dragster casually rolling by in the last clip of the video was maximum flex and I'm here for it.
I feel so lucky that I subscribed to this channel before you got the 12 rotor, so I've watched the whole build as it's happened. Not something I could sit and watch to catch up, but it's really special watching such an exciting and beautiful project as it grows. Can't wait to see it in action 😍
9:00 He looks like a mad conductor for the wildest orchestra 😂
Fantastic Rob, I've been watching your journey for years and I'm sure this is a moment you will remember for a long time!
Insane man, crongrats! You should call this motor "Medusa"
During the first part of the video, I was very concerned that it was making that much boost just revving up with no load. I am definitely no rotary expert, but that typically only happens when the ignition timing is way off. In this case, the friction from the bad rotors were loading down the good rotors, which were making boost. Pretty amazing how you guys were able to figure out those issues, and get it all back together! Very cool project!!!
Yeah I was wondering the same thing. I just assumed it was because of the huge amount of energy in the exhaust of this thing. But it being self-loaded with clearance issues makes more sense.
I feel like enough friction to build that much boost would totally have destroyed those rotors, bearings and and plates though or am I just uneducated?
Sir that rollout at the end went brutally hard. What a mic drop
It sounds like a fleet of ww2 bombers at idle.
I have an important zoom meeting but seeing the title I’ll just say I have a camera malfunction so I can watch right now 😂
This is the way.
this f yes 39:53 man i fallow ur jurney when u post the yellow lambo man , i wish u best of the best to u 👌👌
Rob for your sealing issues “Gasga sinch” is GREAT Stuff.. especially for around your intake runner … it’s not just a sealant but like a glue… I use on timing covers and sometimes head gaskets.. it’s thin but stupid strong… if you ever have issues with sealing.. use it.. expensive but totally worth it and cheaper in the long run
I wouldn't change my message from the last video, you did what I thought except the masette blows... bravo for your persistence, you do exemplary work for R&D
The piping on that thing are crazy, the entire engine is massive 😳
Dragster cameo was EPIC!.. Better than thee abrupt video endings!🤣. Good luck!🤙
Yeah, love the space time dilation that comes with revving something so powerful.
Careful though, you might end up in a different epoch!😂
I now know a hell of a lot more about how rotaries go together than I did yesterday, thanks :)
Super excited to see this go in a top fuel chassis, this is exactly what I wanted to see; I feel it’s the best demonstration of its power even if it’s better as a boat motor.
I'm guessing they'll get around 2700hp. Get them Puerto Rican rotary dragster guys on it with optimizing turbos, intake and ex. Manifolds and it should do 6000+
At the final start up at 39:37 when it started, died down a little, then started again. Just a head up some sparks were flying up I’m sure you noticed but just in case you didn’t. There were definitely sparks flying out lol. Keep it up man!😊
Just an idea about the sparks, it's probably the starters getting overspun. When the engine starts it spins the pinion faster which should retract the starter gear, but then staying on and the surging is not helping. I'm sure they are already cooked again too, their going through literal hell! If he's talking to wasp, I'm hope they are having him measure current and voltage drop to see they are working correctly. It may even be a thing that the starters need different gearing to turn the engine faster. Also put some grease on that flywheel or you'll have no flywheel teeth left after starting this thing so many times. And the latched starter signal needs to be changed so badly, it is not a good idea and is going to hurt someone.
There will always be a coming and a going of staff.....any future resume for the boys....'I assembled the 12 rotor with Rob Dahm'.....you're hired!😂
Mate I absolutely love your positive and down to earth attitude to your problem solving and pioneering intellect!! You're truly an inspiration and the epitome of a positive role model!! Nothing is too difficult or hard for you! Onwards and upwards mate and waiting with baited breath to see the smile on your face when this thing rips in ground breaking and world record making dominance✌️
Loved all the paint flakes coming down from the ceiling when you were revving up the monster.
TOP FUEL ROTARY HERE WE COME BOIS!!!
Nitromethane would require this to run on methanol and then be added to the methanol. Also, they’d probably have to use a CDI ignition setup.
HELL YEAH BROTHER
Wrong channel blud😂
Shut The Front Door! This is going to be sick in that 👀 @ 40:11
Your timing is off. 40:00
I have been following this series from the start and look forward to seeing your journey in building this monster engine. Awesome
You sure know how to end a video. You always leaving me wanting more. I cannot wait to see this on the dyno on on that chassis that just rolled by.
34:15, rob a bakers dozen is 13.....
he said that a lot
40:00 is he going to put the 12 rotor on a dragster huh
Honestly though WHAT ELSE can you put that massive boat anchor in? It wouldnt even fit in a old 50/60's Drag car. And they had TONS of room under the hood. The only way they would ever get to "drive" it would be a funny car or open drag chassis. Top Fuel style.
@24:10 - Dude! Please go buy some new jeans... for our sake.
The amount of time, engineering, knowledge, money, and experience required to pull of such an insane project is staggering in all of the best ways. I cannot imagine anyone else capable of such a massive undertaking as Rob and his team. What a truly remarkable achievement! Keep up the great work and I wish you the utmost success and thank you for taking all of us along for the journey!
That rebuild is sooo soothing to watch.
And great results to boot! 💪🏼
This has to go in a boat. Please Rob, in a boat
wow i still remember when it was just you and Isaiah working those late nights. now you have so many more hands helping making things move to allow us to get more videos
Isaiah is such a real homie
40:05 got a whole two horsepower's already
2000hp, 500 lb ft of torque. All rotary jokes aside, this is awesome. I can’t imagine the feeling for hearing an engine you personally engineered run and put some power down. Great stuff man you inspire me to do better things
The editing and camera work on the last few videos have been awesome you are all doing amazing
I foresee a problem. That end-plate that is bowing out around the intake hole will be under a varying amount of pressure while running. It is backed up mostly by o-rings that will squish-unsquish. The plate will pulse in and out. That plate may need to be bolted in from the other side to keep it from moving under running conditions.
Interesting assembly technique....
My god that ending. Rob, you're insane 🤣
So blazed right now that i totally missed the drag car till it was past already..... so excited to see it built.
Wow! I would be so scared to stand near that beast, even if it is not producing torque right now, it looks scary af.
Gorgeous work! I can't wait to see it on a dyno!!! 👏
3000hp incoming?
4 rotor can make 2000 😊. 6000? 😂
