My favourite NFS 4 High Stakes today getting it to run on new PC still makes it look good & the game play is still fun. Also you can swap police cars to other cop cars when you are on the map in real time once you playing as a cop that is

If III: Hot Pursuit introduced the idea of Intense Police Chases in Racing Games, then High Stakes introduced the idea of an engaging Career Mode. Both games revolutionized the Need For Speed Series. Even if High Stakes is somewhat like Hot Pursuit with improvements, the improvements solidified what we wanted in a Need For Speed game.
Well, sometimes it's just better to not invent bicycle once again and do %itemname% with improvements. Small steps -corrupt- (sorry, but qoute is qoute) can do some nice stuff, when amassed.

Forget Most Wanted or Underground, High Stakes needs to be remade with the same physics and attention to detail but on a modern engine

NFS Hot Pursuit 1998, High Stakes, Porsche Unleashed and NFS HP2 are the classic OG Need For Speeds. This is a true NFS game, not the Undergrounds, or MW, this is what NFS was always about. Racing stock sports cars, all the way to hypercars.
I do like how Criterion brought back this classic vibe of NFS, especially with Hot Pursuit 2010 and Rivals.
I grew up playing all of the need for speed, hence my username here lol.

i love underground and most wanted to death but i'll always hate the negative community perception games like hot pursuit 2010 get for not being "real nfs games" when in essence they're closer to the franchise's roots THAN those games. shit, i have to refrain from calling hot pursuit 2010 "hot pursuit 3" sometimes because i consider it that faithful LOL
A lot of fond memories of this game, first time I bought it was when my best friend invited me to go to Chinatown. We had such a great time and we visited a Retro Video Game Store, I wanted a PC Game and I bought "Need For Speed: Road Challenge" which was a version of High Stakes that was released in different regions of Europe. I installed it when I got home and it was such a blast. It was the first ever legitimate video game I ever bought and it pretty much started my love for Video Game Collecting

Wow, I had no idea High Stakes was this in-depth in terms of features. When I played it, I was just a dumb kid who only played quick races and did police pursuits. I'll have to revisit this game to actually play through the campaign sometime.
3:20 Car Interiors of the late 1990s were literal bargain bin quality. GM obviously did it for the Corvette because of Cost Cutting, majority of American Automakers did it and maybe a few European Automakers as well. Overtime the interiors fall apart and electronics start to fail, whereas the Engine and a few other mechanical components still run decently well
nah i liked them. Better than current overload of touchscreens and steering wheels with more buttons than a fucking TV remote.
The garage menu is definitely one of the best features of this NFS game

Yes it's true for every NFS game from NFS 1 to NFS Hot Pursuit 2 where the PS2 version is very different from the other versions. Then came NFS Underground and they stopped doing that

I am playing this game right now after 20 years, I can tell you this is the best NFS created the amount of detail and love put into the game is amazing.. all the cars sounds so unique, you know what type of car is trying to pass you just by the sound, the handling is very good too, this and NFS underground the best nfs

I’d say the direct competitor to this game in 1999 would be Test Drive 6. I had fun with both back in the day. Definitely a very similar game with a very different selection of cars and more of an international collection of race tracks.

Love old trance music, i have first 3 NFS games installed on Pentium 4 laptop from ca. 2001 running Win 98 SE2.
This is still to this day my most favorite NFS game. The soundtrack is just masterpiece which directly teleports me to another time. I still listen to those tracks every single day in my car. As for the driving feel - there is an option to chose between Arcade and Simulation for the driving feel. So yeah .. the PC version was the best one there can be.
That was the second and third game and only on PS1.

I prefer NFS3 music but everything else goes to this one, such a gem. Not an easy game but not too hard, lots of cars, lots of tracks, good music, well polished, weak spots don't ruin the experience, and you can add as many cars as you want in the PC version.

This was the first nfs i ever played, specifically the ps1 version. Its my absolute favorite nfs game of all time. I only play the ps1 version since its what i grew up with. So many great memories.
I absolutely loved the... fragmented (?) screen behind each car depicting the manufacturer, and how it used to show individual car photos and whatnot, it was such a cool little detail for me. Probably alongside HP2 the best NFS out there (although i am heavily biased, with this being the first game i ever played, and HP2 being the one i grew up with)

My all time favorite NFS the stages are good because they literally existed in real life 1:11 the interior actually lights up when you put the lights on.

this game gives me so much nostalgia, it was the first nfs that i played as a kid. One thing that i always remembered is the soundtrack, specifically Quantum Singularity, the vibe of that song is special. Even dropped tears when i first heard it on nfs 2015
The first game in my life (it was a PS1-version) and the first crush (the only case I don't regret of being simp) - Mclaren F1 GTR Longtail...
And I played it in 2003. And I had a disk with Underground. And I played HS more. That much this game slaps.
Oh, and yeah, the great achievement of mine (for me, of course) when I got older - I played PS1-ver. without repeating ANY tournaments.

Porsche unleashed/2000 had good graphics on pc and the driving feel on that game was fantastic. This and nfs3 98 and hp2 were also fantastic. Didnt like any after that tbh. The music on the games between 98 and 02 were so energetic.
You must've been born sometime in the 80s, early 90s at the latest, right? It's very interesting to see things from perspective of someone a bit older.
My first NFS was Hot Pursuit 2 and I loved it but I mainly grew up with Underground, MW and Carbon, I liked ProStreet, too. Also tried Porsche Unleashed for the first time 5-6 years ago, loved it to death. Too bad I didn't get to play it when I was much younger. So much soul in those older games.
@inert 94 I was born. Got nfs porsche in 2001/2. Pc version was very different to console though. Had nfs3 before that so it was a huge jump and then had nfs4 after both

Interesting how you managed to resist the mainstream culture and stick to the 'exotics racing' subgenre, seeing as everyone and their mom went crazy about the tuner culture with the FnF franchise and tuner video games and so on in the 2000's. @@visionofdisorder hehe yeah, it's a curse but also a blessing in disguise. Otherwise you could never bring yourself to play older games, and by doing so, you'd miss out on some truly quality games.
I grew up in the era of early 3D games with funny looking low-poly 3D models and low-res textures and find myself weirdly attracted to that visual style, despite being able to play much more advanced games nowadays. I find older games easier to get into, without as many tutorials and complicated controls and whatnot.

I remember back in 1999 when i got this game for Christmas. It had a colorful coverart with a distinct red color. Sold exclusively on SIBA in Sweden. Still got my copy til this day.
Hot Pursuit 2 will probably always be the best NFS ever to me. Even had a secret cockpit mode too.

How freaking cool was that Zoomed in tach though. Give you that extra flair by making it look crazier by zooming on the tip of the Needle. Man I miss old NFS. They were so good. My all time favorite outside of the Undergrounds, is NFS: Porsche Unleashed. You get to be a test driver for Porsche and do skid pad stuff as well as racing.
I'm a huge fan of the 3DO NFS, High Stakes both PC and PS1.. Porsche Unleashed both PC and PSX versions and the PS2 version of Hot Pursuit 2... and Underground 2 and Most Wanted.. and Gran Turismo 2 and 4.. Moto Racer and stuff.. and I wanna make a racing game that combines everything into one. I'll call it Racing United : The Virtual Heritage of Racing... I hope I'll manage to make it.

there's no input lag on the bumper camera because the hardware skips rendering the actual vehicle, which in turn gives more power to the rest of the processing, that's just my assumption tho.
