Important to remember that she pointed out that many of these people didn't rise after "emancipation"--many of these families had long been financially secure and had no history of slavery in their history. Also--some our families value education and some of our people value other things and that's what makes us human and diverse like other groups.
Exactly, "free families of color" that are routinely usually forgotten about. Some of these families have members who received Bachelor degrees during the 1870s for example. A substantial number of these families were land owners prior to the development of HBCUs.
Great discussion! Everyone interested in black studies/history should watch this! Purposely forgotten history that, thanks to this book, now will not be forgotten. Right on Nigeria! Thanks to Elizabeth Downing Taylor for this incredible work! Looking forward to seeing her Get2Know video next week. I just joined.... THE TEA!
This was a great discussion ladies. I love that in this conversation we had a chance to look at the past and present state of the black community through a different lense.
Black elitism also has a n ugly side of colorism, featurism and proximity to whiteness. The fine tooth comb and paper bag was at the door of certain churches and determined who got in the social clubs,HBCU's, play groups and social clubs. These clubs still exist and some have darker folks, now but it's not that certain things don't still exist. They do... all of "us" aren't welcome. Many people who were share croppers and domestics were looked down upon as "not wanting more "/academia the best option while ignoring the color/ feature privilege that opened certain doors for them, slammed shut for others.
We don't control media so the shining of the education and intelligence is to have "The Community" spread the information about opportunities. We are constantly commenting about things that need to be done. But from a plurality standpoint we don't accept the responsibility of getting those things done.
Not really sure why the ladies disagreed with the woman in the black who said we don’t value education. We DONT!! We do highlight and worship entertainment and it’s sickening. Maybe they don’t like her, I don’t know. But what she said was a MILLION percent valid. And all the other girl could highlight was the fact that being a librarian won’t make you wealthy Smh
Yes Black Americans do, problem is our education isn’t valued in the US Economy. American Blacks are more educated then ever before and our educational levels outpace most nations
One of our best discussions. So interesting that librarians were the elite originally. Shows the power of reading.

We hear about Jay-Z because mainstream media determines what we hear. Look at our independent media--we always celebrate those things.

Well said! This is left out too much because Black Americans refuse to discuss our colorism issue.
Sign me up, it's about time to exclude.

They had more class than the ones today. Just look at those back then and those today. The weaves...etc.
To be fair, everyone had more class back then.
Weaves? Didn't they wear wigs back in those days? They did but it was hidden very well. They were not open about it as today's generation.
Excelente programa! muy interesante! interesantisimo!
