I still have one of these, originally purchased as a cheaper substitute for the Korg M1 I'd been recording with, but couldn't take on gigs - and it did a surprisingly decent job of it too.
It's like THE most house piano ever. Even more than the M1. I played with one of these in a music shop called Carlsbro in the very early 90's and never saw one since. Fairly rare I guess because I've been around lots of places over the years.
@@pianolion1613 It was Nottingham but I did go to the Mansfield branch regularly also. I did buy a used SH101 from Carlsbro in Mansfield for £120 in 1993. I still have it and they are fetching stupid money now! I even got the mod grip later for as much as I payed for the actual synth!
Indeed, this is a nice little synth .... but what's most fabulous is your fantastic playing, according to each preset! I will enjoy this and all the other parts. :)
The JX-1 has THE easiest user interface of all digital synthesizers and very nice rubber buttons. But a JV-30 is the better choice. It has more or less a complete JX-1 inside and can do even more (much more patches, MIDI Multi-Mode, nameable user patches etc.). Both have the typical SC-55 SoundCanvas sound engine from that time (mainly based on samples from the U-110/-220-library but with more compression and shorter loops). And the later (even better) JV-35 can be "pimped" with a JV-80 board!
I have one. The 5v voltage regulator with built in CPU reset signal went bad in it, causing it not to power up correctly. Replaced the voltage reg. and all works great now. Not a bad controller keyboard if you get bored with the rompler sounds.
I’m eyeing and may get a Roland RD-700 what year was this made I looove it? If it’s a older model I loved the older Rolands? So where can I look this piano up?
avoid at all cost's... this is to performance synths as the roland gw 50 is to work stations.... pants get a jv 30,35,50 80 90 or god forbid jv 1000 instead.. :)
Hi synthmania please could you help i have a roland jx-1 and everything appears to be ok apart from the volume on all outputs are really low to quiet? I have tried headphones and nothing . I have plugged in to a stereo amp and have to turn all volumes up to barely hear notes played which should be really loud? I wondered if you could shed some light or if I'm doing anything wrong? I opened the case and checked inside all connections etc and all look ok? Thanks
Check the velocity sensitivity parameter. If you don't have custom settings that you need to keep, you can also do the factory reset of the unit by holding down Write and Flute and powering the unit on. If after the factory reset the sound is still extremely low, you probably have a fault and need to have it checked out by a tech.
the soundsamples were not good in this synth, but your playing was top notch! all the best - Levi ( i am looking for a cheap synth, small in size, as a complement)
Hey! I have an important question. I got this keyboard as a present but I dont have any cables (only the power cable) so you dont hear any sound when you play. What kind of cable input and output do I need and what do I need to attach? Greetings, Stella
Stella, what do you plan to hook up the JX-1 to? You'll need some sort of amplification to hear it. You might use a keyboard - guitar - bass amp, powered monitors, or even computer speakers, but they'll have different connectors depending on what they are. The JX-1 uses a pair of standard 1/4" guitar/instrument cables, but the other ends can be different depending on what you're connecting to - they could be 1/4", XLR, RCA, or even 1/8" minijack like computer speakers have. Sweetwater has a good page to find out the cables you need: www.sweetwater.com/shop/cables/finder.php
I did some more research. Is it possible to have a midi cable going out to an amplifier and attach a speaker to the amplifier? Or is there a cheaper way to attach it to a speaker (i dont have an amplifier)?
OK, then just get a cable that goes from 1/4" to 1/8" such as this www.amazon.com/Hosa-CMP-310-inch-Interconnect-Cable/dp/B000068O3I/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1483309941&sr=8-3&keywords=1%2F4+to+1%2F8+cable Or this one if your speaker system is stereo: www.amazon.com/Hosa-CMP-159-Stereo-Breakout-Cable/dp/B005HGM1D6/ref=sr_1_4?ie=UTF8&qid=1483309771&sr=8-4&keywords=stereo+1%2F4+to+1%2F8+cable Keep in mind that if you invest in a full range speaker system, you'll get a lot more enjoyment from the synth, as you'll be able to hear the whole range of sound it can produce from lows to highs.
Adam Samuel Harris What kind of comment is this?! How is it relevant to this video? It's like going to a Minimoog video and write that "Minimoog does not have Fender Rhodes piano sound".
Bah! They should have stocked it with synth sounds only, if they had it would have been an option for live use, But the Goddamn instrument emulations give hemroids
Sorry - I don't know - loved that song, though - If I had to throw out a wild guess, I remember the JD-800 being used a lot for that sound, but it could be anything..
I still have one of these, originally purchased as a cheaper substitute for the Korg M1 I'd been recording with, but couldn't take on gigs - and it did a surprisingly decent job of it too.
In the Prince song "Thieves in the Temple" (1990) (where the Linn LM-1 was heard), the Roland JX-1 patch "Fantasia" was heard.
You say that on just about every video you watch.

Wow I really enjoyed the JX-1 Electric Piano! Thanks
I had one on stage, with a Yamaha SY-35...
Lot of fun !!!
My FIRST keyboard back in 89 omg love this board. Lucy in the sky with diamonds PERFECT sound..strings were awesome. LOVE THIS VINTAGE BOARD
I bought this keyboard last year for 10 euros. No cables or anything but I think it's worth every cent. Works like a charm!
I've got also one!!! This was my first Synthesizer. I love it soooooo much. I have connected it via Midi to my Integra 7 Sound Module.
It's like THE most house piano ever. Even more than the M1. I played with one of these in a music shop called Carlsbro in the very early 90's and never saw one since. Fairly rare I guess because I've been around lots of places over the years.
Was this Carlsbro in Sheffield ?

superb demo , nice synth for low money...
Reminds me of late 90's and early 2000's Nintendo games.
I have one. The 5v voltage regulator with built in CPU reset signal went bad in it, causing it not to power up correctly. Replaced the voltage reg. and all works great now.
Not a bad controller keyboard if you get bored with the rompler sounds.
Remember the magazine ad for this keyboard with the rocker and the diagram of all the necessary "rocker accessories"?
Still got mine from the day it was released, still play it and use it on releases to this day, it aint all bad....
this was one of muy first synths, good for gigs (really lightweight)
Nicely done! I have one of these myself. How much did you get yours for?
That sax! ❤❤❤
Sadly my mother passed away and this board is part of her belongings. Anybody suggestions for a pricepoint I shouldnt sell under?
No less than $299 atm.
I’m eyeing and may get a Roland RD-700 what year was this made I looove it? If it’s a older model I loved the older Rolands? So where can I look this piano up?
The piano sound is SOOO houser wow. And the strings and brass sound identical to the Mario 64 sound track
Is Roland JX 1 better than D 10?
love the accordion
Hi, one question, the JX.1 have a drum set?
No.
Hi! Can I use this keyboard how a midi controller in softwares like Sonar, Cubase, in windows 7?
Hi, you surely can, it has MIDI In, Out, Thru.
avoid at all cost's... this is to performance synths as the roland gw 50 is to work stations.... pants get a jv 30,35,50 80 90 or god forbid jv 1000 instead.. :)
Hi! Is any PC parameter editor for this synth to make your own patches? or you just can use the factory presets?
DJNicolasBeck Its a performance synth so only the presets but you can combine them and slight edit using the sliders.

MIDI doesn't carry audio. What speaker(s) do you have available?
i just have a minijack speaker

I had one with roland jd 800
09:15 for Gus Lozada. :)))
One lackluster Roland....I loved the U20 (Juno-20) thou, both appearance and the warm sound, but I missed the point about the JX-1
The JX-1 was the entry-level, affordable unit at that time. It was quite respectable in its days.
How did you learn to play like that? wicked Jesus!
oboe is great, specially for Marillion and Genesis.
I REALLY do not like synthersizers that imitate other instruments.... However Roland has always made good stuff
Synthesize is what imitate means you tard! lol
got one free so that's ok, but it's not a synthesizer
Roland JX-1 does not have DX7 marimba sounds.
Adam Samuel Harris What kind of comment is this?! How is it relevant to this video? It's like going to a Minimoog video and write that "Minimoog does not have Fender Rhodes piano sound".
+SynthMania haha, indeed!
LOL
Roland's pianos remain the same.
Amazing reasonably priced synth... About comparable to the Yamaha DX7
that grand piano doesn't sound too healthy
+MrSpasticdancer Trust me, in 1990 it sounded pretty healthy, especially for the price (source: I was there).
+SynthMania omg mr synth replied to me this has made my day
in 1990 this piano sound is very appreciated.. same with korg M1.
No synth sounds in this, just boring traditional rompler stuff.
Bah! They should have stocked it with synth sounds only, if they had it would have been an option for live use,
But the Goddamn instrument emulations give hemroids
I all depends what you need it for doesn't it? I mean really????
paolo any ideas what synth did the intro of of grace -Not over yet.
