Superboy even schooled him with actual skills. It just kinda undercuts the common sense going on. He obviously should have known how to fight beforehand given how he went up against that dude with a sword.

I think Greg Weisman (who produces the show) said that S1-2 were PG going on PG-13 while S3 was PG-13 going on R (although I guess technically since it's a show it would be S1-S2 was Y7 going on TV-14 while S3 is TV-14 going on TV-MA).
It's worth mentioning that the showrunners knew the fans of this show were all adults now, as it's cancellation and resurrection were at opposite ends of a decade. So expect something more in line with the DCAU movies in terms of sex and violence (those were coming out at the time and fans loved it), just below Invincible's levels of both.

BTW the scientist guy helping Bedlam and Vertigo is a little-known villain in the comics known as Doctor X. Here, he can create multiple duplicate, whereas in the comics he can only create one energy duplicate, named "Doctor Double-X", but it is bigger, stronger and meaner than he is, as well as being able to fly and shoot energy blasts.

the problem with season three is that its plot is all over the place, you follow three story lines and try to do all of them at the same time, not only that the three storylines each have a team (not including the justice league) and way too many characters.
