    Years ago when I built my main shelving I found some 3/4" solid cherry boards, but only 4-5 inches wide, at a very attractive price. But when I went to the carpenter who had done my kitchen, he suggested that I use the same 3/4" birch plywood that was used for the kitchen cabinets. While the cost of the solid wood was way cheaper than the plywood, but the construction cost would be higher. Plus, he said the plywood would be substantially sturdier. Now, 35 years later, full of records, no bowing whatsoever. The cherry stain also looks nice. So, good choice on the birch. BTW, you may want to glue thin strips on the front.

    Looking good Tim!! The expression on your face gives away how pleased you are, good for you. I will confess, I am envious of the shelving system but even more so of having a collection that requires it!! My meager collection couldn't even begin to fill one section. Looking forward to the updates as they come along. I have really learned a lot from your channel, don't change a thing. Best regards, Bob Ratliff.

    After 50 years of using bricks & boards I am so happy to have kalix shelves now. I also ran out of room years ago so I quit buying LP's, went digital for 37 years and came back to my vinyl. I now have 98 cubicles full, plus the box sets on top. Congrats on the new room. I finally took over the front room with my new stereo after 36 years in the bedroom.

    It’s really nice to hear how happy you are with not only the shelving (which looks great!) but your entire listening room.
    I hear you on a good chair. I’m searching too. I’m leaning towards a vintage Eames style but open to what I can find.

    Congratulations on the new home- Awesome set-up, Tim! Those shelves are rock solid and will last as long as you need them. The "L" bracket you installed under the shelf is probably not needed, and may get in the way of your LPs as you fill in that shelf. If you feel you need a middle support, I would suggest getting some of the end cap plywood cut to fit snugly into the top (underside of shelf above)/and the bottom of each shelf, and place it directly in the middle. Your shelves would then have a center support that would not interfere with your LP storage. I did this myself on a large storage rack that holds nearly 1200 LPs, and it fully supports the LPs and works beautifully. What ever you decide, you have made a wise choice that looks great!

    Nice shelves. I’m surprised with getting a bigger space that you didn’t focus on having more separation for the speakers. I usually have the same separation as you do, but recently moved my system downstairs to the living room and really separated the speakers. Wow, it’s unbelievable. For instance hearing Jimi Hendrix’s Electric Ladyland, Jimi’s guitars moving from one side of the room to the other is almost otherworldly! Truly a spectacular experience. Makes me want to try different albums just to experience them with this setup. Also I now want to improve my gear.

    • @Universityofvinyl
      @Universityofvinyl  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Well, I was able to pull them from against the wall and can hear a difference. I’ll see if I can get a bit more separation also. Thanks

    Great looking shelving Tim. I had something similar years ago with plywood shelves also. I went to the hardware store and got something called mac tac. It's sort of like wallpaper but already has the glue on it with peelable wax paper on the back. It comes in rolls. I'm sure today there are more companies making it with more color choices. Anyway I cut a piece to size and wrapped the entire shelf with it. It gave the shelving a more finished look. Just an idea I wanted to run past you.

    Absolutely lovely new room Tim! 👍 You must *LOVE* having all that space now 😊 The shelving is super solid and very nice looking. I think too it probably is a good idea to add that bracket halfway along the bottom of the shelves. I think I can barely tell an ever-so-slightest 'bow in that first shelf. I think the 3/4" shelves are sturdy enough, but I think that there will be a discernible 'bow' in them without a midway support.
    All of my shelves are basically like your beautiful custom made flip bin style. I just love being able to browse ALL of my records like you do in a record store, so I built a crude strong undershelf and then the actual wooden record crates/boxes sit underneath and on top, all facing front to browse through very easily.
    I'm a little surprised that you haven't utilized the length of the room and put your speakers along the shorter wall by the window. I would frigg'n *KILL* to have a 30 foot long room. I know that right now you have a ton of stuff in boxes and stuff in that area, but I would humbly suggest for more depth and dimension in your soundstage using the length of the room (or about maybe 2/3 of it) and then place your listening chair there. That way, you can experiment with having your speakers out from the wall at different distances and most definitely allow a longer focal length to your listening position. You could also make the speakers equidistant from each other and from each side wall, giving you more stereo symmetry. And, you can still easily have your nice shelving right where it is, which would then be to the right of your listening chair as you face the end wall. It just seems like you could get a LOT more use out of the length of the room and not waste all that space along the long wall opposite to your system now. Just a thought...

    This is so awesome! So happy for you! I love the modern shelves. I have a similar situation where my system is sitting on top of a vintage George Nelson console (with the system torn out of it unfortunately), and it has a section underneath for records so all my jazz are in that, then carefully hidden behind the sofa which faces the console is another low one level shelf I designed myself with my "all time favorite" pop and rock. Then in my office are 16 soon to be 20 kallax cubes with everything else. It was hard to decide what to take out of the main room as my collection grew but I don't want records to consume my living room so that's how it goes. My one suggestion for you is to build more of a corner for that speaker near the shelves so the speakers are more equally backed with a corner. I'm not sure if it will make a huge difference but I suspect it will focus the sound a little more if you have the speaker in more of a corner. My vote for a chair goes to The "Womb Chair". Looking forward to seeing you do your new videos in the new space!

    Congrats on the new digs.
    Unboxing that many records is a BEAR. My new music room is 11x15 and I had the movers just stack all my LPs and CDs in the middle of the floor. They did it in no order whatsoever. It took 5x as long to dig out boxes 1, 2 & 3 as it took to shelf them.
    I think a 22" shelf should hold about 175 records if you fill it but don't crowd it. Should we start a pool?

    The room and I mean room to grow is Amazing. I’m in that 3rd bedroom for my record room time for a new house? The design is all you make it one way this year maybe another next always evolving. My only thoughts hope the unit is screwed in the studs,do everything you can to prevent a flood it just cost the insurance company 65K to fix mine, and a security alarm with fire and CO central monitoring if you don’t have one. I also have glass break throughout the house. I don’t mean to sound paranoid Lol but I do have Blink security cameras I plug in my room when I’m away and we also have house entry cameras. I also have a professional 20 pound CO2 fire extinguisher just for my room because of electronics etc. My wife knows the drill we only care about the record room and Steely Dan etc Lol Last of all the chair went to this large expensive furniture store because I exhausted myself from Marketplace and dropped 800 on this powered lazy boy type recliner with blue LEDs along the base and in the cup holders. I kick back with a glass of wine turn the lights off throw the LEDs on and it’s Robyn Frigin Hitchcock time end to a hard day of engineering Lol I got it in vinyl because of Jenny and animal cruelty. If you get a powered recliner I highly suggest the warranty on the motor. Anyway Happy Wife Happy Vinyl Life!
