I'm an owner of a ball python, bearded dragon, and feeder mouse I'd fallen in love with. I love your videos compared to the larger reptile channels. I appreciate you're detailed videos that ACTUALLY help people like us
I set a couple of these tubs up, when you first came out with this video, can honestly say these work great and the mice have no problem getting to food with the 1/4 inch mesh
Thanks for the great video. I never thought about using old jars as watering bottles. I’m going to try it today. Thanks again you taught me something today.
Good info....You remind me of ME when I was in my first couple years of breeding. I did the same stuff before I broke down and bought a freedom breeder. Back then (1994-1995) that only ran me about $1,600-1,800 for the 8 level mouse breeder one (40 tubs), shipped. After that, the mouse issue was never an issue again. I ended up selling off a lot of my extra mice for like $.35/each. In the winter it would make me a nice little bit of extra $$ b/c I was still running like 160 females at all times. Whatever was left was frozen. Never a shortage....awesome. It also helped that I had the Harlan Sprague Dawley "super mice" in all those tubs.
Thanks so much for your thorough explanation of this cheap and simple alternative. For water, we tried a plastic Talenti jar and drilled a 1/16" hole. So far so good!
Thank you for this very straight forward, understanding and very detailed video ! My snakes are gonna be happy to have their own food at home , especially with this pandemic and pet stores not having what I need !
Thank you so much for this video! My 14y/o has a snake and she came to the conclusion that growing her own mice will be cheaper! She needed some guidance and YOU provided that! Measurements and all, well detailed.
Great video!! Wouldnt of thought of using those dish pans. I use them upside down as a hide for my snakes. Im so gonna make a a small rack out of those.
Thank you for the detail on how to build the crates. Question: What do you do with the shavings when you change the box, so not cause health issues? Thank you.
I really really appreciate this, I'm considering breeding feeder mice in the future for the rosy boa that I hope to adopt and also for giving to my cats as mice are a natural part of their diet.❤
I currently have 5 different snake species, all are young and barely onto fuzzies, but I was definitely having thoughts about breeding my own mice in order to save on $$$ (I've been getting frozen pinkies in bulk online but wow that shipping ain't cheap) So thank you for the video! I think I'll research a bit more into this.
Even with just one snake, it's so worth it. I've worked out that my one snake is costing me a ton because she's a finicky eater. I've had to throw away 6 f/t in the last 4 weeks. I decided to start breeding instead because then if she doesn't eat it, it can go back in the tank instead of the trash. I already have pet rats so I already had bedding, food, and a good size tub so it cost me all of $8 to get started. They'll only cost me about $10 a month to care for them and I normally feed frozen every 4-5 days, which comes to around $20 a month.
I'm thinking about raising mice/rats for profit. I'm pretty sure there's snake keepers around my area (I am new to reptiles, don't have a snake yet though). Some people in my area also keep rodents. I have kept rodents since I was a kid. Pretty sure it would make a great business in my area. Also, thanks for the water jar idea. Every store bought rodent water bottle I have ever bought, leaked. It's why my pet mouse uses a water bowl. He's also old, so I'm not gonna try and switch. I will however use that idea when I get mice to breed, or another pet rodent.
bill havbills haven't managed to find any females available locally, but I recently found a place that sells live mixed feeder mice (that means there will be females). Plan on getting my male from petsmart because I'm a sucker for the "pretty" mice. Unfortunately my pet male mouse passed away, but at least I now have all of his supplies I can use (food bowls, wheel, etc.). I plan on starting my project this weekend. Thats why I am revisiting the video so I can build my cages. I also found some tubs for sale like he uses.
Hello! Thanks for this video. Very helpful. Once the mice have babies, do we take them to a different tub or do they just stay in the tub set up for the rest of their lives until ready for feeding?
I’m so glad i found this video! Is inbreeding in mice dangerous for the snake that eats them? I have a small East African Sand Boa who barely handles an adult mouse. He’s a little guy. He does better with two pinkies or a fuzzy or a hopper. It’s hard to find the right sizes at the local store but more importantly, we will be moving to an area in Florida which will simply be too far away from the nearest town with feeder mice and my snake WILL NOT eat frozen thawed mice. I will have to breed them. However, we likely won’t have the space to dedicate to breeder boxes like this. I’m probably just gonna keep everyone together but that means they will breed at will... so I may end up with inbred mice. Do you have any suggestions? Thank you!!
Interestingly, inbreeding is not as big an issue in other mammalian species as it is in humans and other primates. Other species have more natural "failsafes" against harmful mutations caused by lack or genetic diversity
I know I’m late to watching this lol but I recommend try a dremel to cut your wire they have a metal cutting adapter to add it’s like 20 bucks at Walmart comes in like a pack of 12 different blades it not only is quick and easy if you cut it right on the line it will get rid of the jaggers on the wire as well!
Have you ever had a problem with the mice chewing holes in those tubs? I put an extra mouse in a sterilite tub once and it chewed it's way out overnight.
Really like video, i have 2 BPs and a sand boa, will a bigger tub work with rats. I am at about $8 a week. A rat pup, a mouse hopper and and a fussie.was going to try the mice bin, but wanted to know about rats as well.
I agree with frequent cleaning. I have a pet mouse. I cleaned his bin a day or two ago. Doesn't smell. I just have one. If you have more than one, you need too clean it more
I found a series of videos where someone had success breeding mice but they had to separate the pregnant mother, because every single time the babies were eaten. Do you think this is because she uses the same breeder male, at least for the videos I've seen. Maybe the male taught the other mice to eat the babies. or maybe it's just because all of the mice she had or from a particular pet store, and the starting mice all ate the babies and taught their children to eat the babies.
I'd say they eat babies when they're over stressed. Breeding mice and poor conditions make them stressed and they have more chances to eat their babies. Also because of a lack of proteins.
@@ColdBloodCreations I have been using the masonry tubs from lowes and homedepot. Mind tell me what you are using? Its very frustrating buying tubs every month not to mention loose rats. Thanks
For my mice I use 10 gallon fish tank and 10 gal tubs for my main colony and for my about to give birth females I put 2 of the females who are prego in like a 6 to 8 quart tub just until they have their babies and raise them and when it comes weining time I put the females back in to their tubs and feed/sell the babies off
How come your mice do not just jump out and runaway when you open the cover? Mine are like spring loaded! They are trying to jump out and runaway all the time..
I built similar tothat and found that the half inch wire is a waste the mice will just chew and chew and chew the food until it's all in the bottom of the pan which is soiled and no longer eatin
HELP. Do they bite off the mesh screen? I wanna start breeding rats first before getting a bp but I'm afraid they my cut loose around the house. I'm planning to use plastic bin cage with mesh on top
Thanks for the video. I built 3 of these using the 1/4" wire. Using feed boxes like you have. The 3 colonies consists of 1 male and 2 females each. At first, the mice were reproducing nicely. However, after about 6 months, they have stopped... I'm puzzled. Starting to wonder if there might be a toxicity issue caused by feeding through the galvanized mesh? Have you had any similar issues? I feed muzuri rodent breeder, supplemented with a high quality dog food. Water and bedding stay fresh. Temps stay in high 70s. The mice are too young for age to be an issue. Thanks in advance for your thoughts, and thanks again for the video!

I have 2 kingsnakes on mice (adult mice and fuzzy). I've been looking for a video that caters towards those of us with 1 or 2 snakes. Thank you!

No inbreeding will not affect the quality of the mice as far as they are used for feeders. It doesn't seem to affect mice or rats at all...
Cold Blood Creations that’s very interesting... thanks for getting back to me so promptly!
@@ColdBloodCreations it can shorten their lifespan but that really doesn't matter with feeders.
Interestingly, inbreeding is not as big an issue in other mammalian species as it is in humans and other primates. Other species have more natural "failsafes" against harmful mutations caused by lack or genetic diversity
What is the type of FRM chow you are using here? I wish to try it. I appreciate you're videos. Thx

I have a question can I move the male mouse from one tub to another or will the females hurt him
what kind of mice did you breeding?
Now I'm looking for corn snake feeder mice.
Great video I will be trying this out
Hey Ron,
How did the experiment with the 1/4 only tops? We're the mice able to feed adequately through the 1/4 mesh?
Thanks for the info very helpful…😎

Did you feed your reptile with live mouse...if not how do you put them to sleep?
We use CO2 gas to put them to sleep.
David Still if I I’m not mistaken that’s what co2 basically is
Have you ever had a problem with the mice chewing holes in those tubs? I put an extra mouse in a sterilite tub once and it chewed it's way out overnight.

Here in Texas it's Damn HOT 😳 ...
Very detailed, Thanks !!
Great video! What feed are you using?
Can you breed rats in them also or do you need bigger
Can you pls tell me how to lessen their stinky smell. Thank you.
Ya go to clean em frequently. No way around it.
Definitely. I kept my few inside and had to clean them almost daily or my roommates would complain.
I agree with frequent cleaning. I have a pet mouse. I cleaned his bin a day or two ago. Doesn't smell. I just have one. If you have more than one, you need too clean it more
How to do cleaning for those tank live with babysitting mother
Hell yeah very good video glad I watched this for ideas...
When do u separate the baby mice from there mother
When they reach 13 grams in weight and the eyes are fully open.
So what week will that be
It varies. We use a scale, not a calender to know when they are ready.
Great video
You can always use 1/4 inch wire an snip out the wire in the area you set for feeding to 1/2 inch, saving you from having to buy 2 different sizes.
sir what is the size of the sterilite dishpan or how many liters are you using? thank you sir...
I gotta know how you made those racks! I think they’re so neat looking.
Thank you! :) We made a full tutorial on how we built them here:

Thanks for watching
I found a series of videos where someone had success breeding mice but they had to separate the pregnant mother, because every single time the babies were eaten.
Do you think this is because she uses the same breeder male, at least for the videos I've seen.
Maybe the male taught the other mice to eat the babies.
or maybe it's just because all of the mice she had or from a particular pet store, and the starting mice all ate the babies and taught their children to eat the babies.
I would guess that the food she is using is of poor quality and low in protein. They are eating the babies to get additional protein.
I'd say they eat babies when they're over stressed. Breeding mice and poor conditions make them stressed and they have more chances to eat their babies. Also because of a lack of proteins.
where can the wire be purchased?
Can crawler hopper mice get water from the jars after wean? Thanks
Yes, absolutely
Is there risk of getting any disease from them ? Should mice breeding room be separate?
Only a risk if you don't keep their cages clean
Great video I just built this great video
Awesome! Thank you!
Is it a good idea to breed if you have one cornsnake?
That is entirely up to you and how easy you can buy rodents vs the need to breed yourself.
thanks foe easy setup
Can i use aspine fibers for substrate
Yes you can
@@ColdBloodCreations thank you
@@ColdBloodCreations another question. To get started do you buy pet rats of feeder rats as breeders?
I'm thinking about making my frames out of pvc pipe and wiring on the mesh instead of the wood.
That would be cool...
Do you have much of a problem with rats chewing holes in the tubs?
Yes. So we switched to a tub with no edge inside of it.
@@ColdBloodCreations I have been using the masonry tubs from lowes and homedepot. Mind tell me what you are using? Its very frustrating buying tubs every month not to mention loose rats. Thanks
Tank you.
Wow I was the 50 thousandth viewer 😳
I feed my mice stuff like leftovers, birdseed and sometimes things like strawberries, apples and other stuff like mealworms
Why do you have Jeffrey dahmer as your pfp
Have you had any trouble with the mice or rats chewing through the tubs?
Yep. It happens. If the tubs have smooth sides its hard for them to chew. But if it has any lip at all on the inside, they will find it and chew it.
Is the rodent room heated?
and cooled...
Do people buy these for pets or is it just usually for snake 🐍 food
Both, actually.
Oh at least some get homes 🏠 then.... I was just curious
CoreRTV most find homes in the bellies of snakes.

How many mice would I need to feed 1 sand boa hatchling, might be 2 soon? And about 8 leopard geckos.

We don't use screen. We use what is called HARDWARE CLOTH, and they can't chew through it.
I don’t have any snakes, but I may use this design and information to breed some for meat
Bless you
What temperature can mice handle?
They can handle the same temps we can...
