First there was Kong Man! Then there was Kong Man again, but this time Sonic the Hedgehog was plastered all over it! Then later there was a little travel Kong Man which will also be shown in this video, because I got one on eBay and that's how that works!

*HOLY CRAP!* THIS! I remember seeing a Sonic marble toy at a toy store when I was a kid, and it has always been floating around in the back of my mind. The thumbnail perfectly matched what I recall to be on the front of the box! It's nice to be able to finally see it in action!
I feel like it's a missed opportunity for them to theme the Sonic version around Hill Top Zone from Sonic 2, considering it appears to be released around the time of Sonic 2 with Sonic and Tails on the art. Like despite the name of "Hill Top", that level from Sonic 2 was very mountainous and had lots of bridges and zip lines too.
It's almost like the marketing team hadn't actually played any of the games and were making a quick cash grab to capitalise on a Nineties icon or something

It's a joke he made early in this video, where he says "I want 'I can't stop thinking about Kong Man' on my headstone." The death date on the headstone in the picture is August 23rd, 2018. Which coincidentally, that's what he said in an earlier video would be his "Dolmio Day"- the day he eats pasta till he pukes.

@Samurai Shampoo You see, the joke is that Tupac released albums in the next couple of decades after his death. He had lots of unreleased songs, so his record label released them as albums into the 2000s despite him having died in the 90s

Holy shit, I had an intense flood of memories just seeing the thumbnail, I loved that sonic thing as a kid. I don’t think I’ve thought about it for a good twenty years or so but man, there should be a German word for when you get hit with a direct shot of melancholy-nostalgia out of nowhere.
This and my talkboy, the real life version of the recording thing used in home alone 2, were the best toys I remember getting.

Fun fact: Here in America, Kong Man was known as "Haunted House" and was sold exclusively through Sears department stores.

I searched for "Tomy Pocketeers Kongman" but I only saw the "travel" version seen in this video, which appears to be roughly the same height and width as a normal Pocketeer but at least three times the depth.
It could be that the even smaller Kongman people claim exist is the King Kong Pocketeer, which is loosely styled after Donkey Kong but without the Nintendo license (so Tomy called it "King Kong" instead even though I'm not sure whether they got the King Kong license from Universal Studios) which is really just the Cat'n'Mouse Pocketeer with new artwork.
I got this for Xmas when it came out. I remember being super excited, played it for half an hour and never touched it again.

So that's what this thing was called! I haven't watched the Screwball Scramble video yet, but the thumbnail dredged up an ancient memory of that orange mountain with the ball bearing and everything. I remember getting one at probably a garage sale or thrift store as a kid in the early 90s, but the name escaped me until now. Glad to get that settled after only a couple days, would've driven me crazy.
Poor old Dr. Stuart Ashen, the own-brand sauce he had on Dolmio Day took its toll after all...

When I first saw this video. I thought "cool, we used own a knock off version of kong man". And then at 8:13 you show it and that is what we used to own! Apparently not a knock off, just a travel version :D Nostalgia achieved.

Forgotten is the right word! I had one of these as a kid, and thoroughly enjoyed it, but unlike Screwball Scramble my memory of it had entirely vanished until this video brought it back out of the aether.
I don't remember Kong Man but I do remember seeing the Sonic one in the Argos catalogue and not being able to afford it.
I had the original Kong Man growing up and is still, to this day, one of my favorite toys to think back on. Such an amazing concept and design!
I had one of these mate! Great fun until I lost the original ball-bearing and so ended up getting some extra that proved too small and fell inside the unit 😂 Then flogged it at my local car boot sale, sad times for a British 9 year old 😅🇬🇧

I was wondering if "platoo" was a weird Brit pronunciation. Glad he cleared it up for me.
Sometimes Ashen pronounces things weirdly anyway, examples include Greasy and Moustache.
I did some digging, and the company behind these also made those water-filled pachinko type things. Those, I _do_ remember; my grandparents used to keep a few around the house for when we (or any of my many cousins) came to visit.
I'd like to see more of these screwball scramble type games, maybe even a let's play of some old school Labyrinth

😭 I had the Sonic one as a kid!! I think it was mums before mine? The batteries exploded at some point and I have no memory of how it actually worked, until now. I used to just push the ball bearing about the course and had a blast. Thanks for covering this! Blast to the past!

Seeing that Kong Man (knock-off WonderBoy?) machine gave me a flashback of a memories I had long forgotten. It was a visual distraction and mechanically memorable as a child but I was way too hyper to sit and play it for more than 2 minutes at a time. I particularly liked the weight-activated swinging arm with the magnet. As always this channel hits you with blasts from the past. Might be the rosiest of all the tints of specs.

I had the Kongman years ago. Yes i loved the bit where it went up the invisible wall at the top. Haven't played it in years but when you reached the top i instantly remembered that it was going to ring.
I also finally figured out you guys were saying "screwball" scramble and not "scribble" scramble. I guess it's the accent. When Barry said it I was hearing scribble scramble too 😜

Oddly enough, not the first time I've seen this played this last year o TH-cam. A let's player called raocow is playing every sonic game, in release order, and this is one that he took a crack at.

I had a kong man when I was a kid! Had the luck playing with it growing up, one of my favorite toys, but my father would never leave it around, always box it and put away when I was done playing, probably because he was aware of how expensive it was haha

Recall being invited by a classmate to go to France with him and his parents. During the trip, we swung by a Toys'R'Us and I spotted Sonic on the cover of this box. Being a HUGE fan of Sonic back in the day, I just had to own this thing. Still safely stored away. Along with some Caps Slammers / Caps the Game caps with Sonic on them~ Good times.
This brought back a memory of tomy animal ball park. It was a dome shaped toy like this but for younger kids. I remember playing with it in hospital when I was 5 when I had my tonsils out

But now i realise is based off something entirely different and the history of that random thing i bought ill take it! Im happy i can actually reminisce about something for once haha
One of the kids in my first school brought this game in for the last day before summer. The vague memory sat in the back of my mind ever since, it's nice that I finally know the name of it.

Watching this back now, and seeing the collector's edition plug reminded me of how my dad got me the DVD version as I think either a late crispsmass or early birthday present, and they accidentally sent him the blu ray version instead. When he let them know about the mix-up, I can only assume they made enough spares of each to cover mishaps like that because they sent the DVD version too and told him he could keep the blu rays. So... I unintentionally have both versions of it.
I dunno what they were called over there, but I LOVED the Tomy Pocketfuls when I was a kid. Never saw that one though, but if I had I would have probably been begging for it. Thanks for introducing it!

Two Ashen vids in a row making me feel old as hell !!! 👴 first Screwball Scramble and now this! i had both versions, Kong Man and this, I remember getting shouted at for playing it in my room late at night because of the noise it makes 😂 But Im still glad I grew up in times when toys like this were amazing! we didnt need ipads, the internet and digital tv!
