  • I've been asked a lot about my multiphonic overpressure sounds. here, in a quick three minute video I give some demonstration and explanation of the technique for composers and performers.

This is awesome, are there any pieces you would direct a composer to if they were looking to hear how this has been used in context?

      hi there!
chaya czernowin's piece "irrational" for loadbang uses this technique for trumpet and trombone (which are slightly different sounding!) and i've recorded a few improvs close mic-ed with this sound.
ut semoto explores this in the low range - soundcloud.com/williamlangtrombone/20191124-1427_ut_semoto-wav
and this improv was part of my first experminets with overpressure on my own. soundcloud.com/williamlangtrombone/a-fun-improv-all-acoustic

If it feels like my head is going to explode, am I doing it wrong? :) Do you feel lots of back pressure? Thanks William!

that seems about right! i feel a ton of pressure, kind of like playing an oboe.
i also try to make sure that the pressure stays in the face and embouchure, in a way, and to make sure i'm not bringing the entire body and musculuture system into it as much. it is pretty fatiguing on the chops, but hopefully shouldn't cross the line into painful.
always play a few classically minded long-tones after during a warm down also! it's good to reset after strenuous techniques.
