Moist Girth I went on the space needle for my 5th grade field trip and it was really awesome. It was not really scary, just on the elevator because there is a huge window where you can see everything as you are going up. Once you are up there, you wont be that scared, it will just be a normal feeling.
Moist Girth, i went to Seattle in April and didn't go up the needle, just took pix from the ground, I didn't think it was all that much, they were still doing renovations. But let me tell you, I went back last week and decided to go up. It was really amazing! The glass panels around 360° view of the city was nice! I'd recommend it. I'm also afraid of heights, but you have to get on one of the benches, lean against the glass and take a picture!
His original hand drawn drafts? I love how he’s standing there, “just looking up, I remember creating those.” Gosh that’s so cool! Makes me think of my father, we’ll drive around town and he’ll point at all sorts of buildings and parks that he’s done electrical work in or for. Entire buildings like the brand new trampoline park in town. Making something is so exciting. Being apart of something like this is really special.
I've thought about that more than once where it relates to my dad's career as a developer in SoCal and seeing all of his plans that came to fruition and are still occupied, lived in, and enjoyed three generations later -- including the spec house he built for us in Long Beach. Still standing and still stands out for its exterior architecture. And he's still alive to look back and say yeah, I made that.
I'll do your job for you CBS. In 1961 a $5 million project would cost $41 million in today's inflation-adjusted amount. But that accurate comparison isn't as flashy is it?
If it was built today from scratch, I can't even see it being constructed for $41 million. That would probably only get a mega-stripped down version. $41 million might get you a 605 foot television transmission tower these days, not a whole space needle. Construction costs for all the things one would want in a space needle, have skyrocketed, much more than average inflation (that the government under-reports). $41 million can't even buy you a decent house in Beverly Hills. :)
When you live in Seattle you realize that most days, there is little to no view due to weather and the food is nothing to write home about. And on the days when there is a view I would rather fly Kenmore Air seaplanes over the city or take the Duck and get up-close and personal.
I was in Bellingham, Washington last week and met a couple of people in their 80's that looked 60. I think people might just be a bit happier and healthier here letting them be healthier longer perhaps. Aging also happens rapidly once your body quits working or accidents happen. The difference between someone looking 75 or 80 is often just a matter of sickness and injury/bed rest.
I think most old peoples biggest mistake is becoming couch potatoes once they retire. I think the true secret to staying healthy during your golden years is to keep yourself busy physically and mentally.
Sonya Miller, Girl you ROCK! Thrilled to see you are the Field Superintendent. Gary great job! Refreshing to see the joy in your face when reliving your creation from 1962. Awesome job! I can't wait to visit and experience the upgrade.
I wish i wasn't afraid of heights. I'm proud of being from Seattle, always will be. Still haven't been up there in 23 years of my life. It's on my list though.
Really? I would love to visit Washington State one day, and possibly even live there, so I'll take all the advice that I can get. Kind greetings from Houston, Texas. :)
At the start of this video, the reporter mentioned a "2,000 pound work platform." That has to be wrong. One of those glass panels alone weighs 2,000 pounds.
Still one of the happiest days of my life. That I dreamt for all my life to be able to live in Seattle and visit the Space Needle and after traveling 3,300+ miles and everything I have overcome in my life. I actually got to achieve that goal.
I'm with John Dickerson. It's unnerving to be sitting at dinner in such a "precarious" situation high above the ground. I have a feeling that in the future they will cover areas of that restaurant area with a carpet (that you cannot see through). By customer request.
Leo Plotter wtf no that was me saying Portland and Seattle are better than any overrated city in Cali. Have u ever seen the greater than ”>” less than “
Not anymore. The opioid and homeless epidemic are totally out of control. The disintegrating streets are getting worse too. Hope a new more moderate council gets voted in later this year.
I've been to the Space Needle about two years ago, I loved it! But I wish I could buy a ticket to go again next year, and don't even get me started about my fear of heights.
Was there about 5 years ago and then again last week so I remember fairly well what it looked like and the difference is pretty awesome. It's a neat experience.
Getting rid of the stench of the bums that surround the Needle would be better. Yes, I realize that the tourists that visit say, "What homeless, I didn't see anything?" That's because they clear them out temporarily during certain times. "We don't want the outsiders to see reality, now do we?" Trash that has make up on is still...trash.
Regardless of which side's politics you're siding with, and whether or not you enjoy free views or being a tourist, I will say that the updates are interesting if not fascinating. The time before last that I went up there was when the restaurant was still there. I was a kid then. This more recent time that I went up, I went to see the sunset. Just barely missed it but the tail end of it was still beautiful. What was interesting however, were the nighttime views. On both upper and lower floors, you can either look out towards the dark abyss of the water in the west or to the east, the glittering cityscape. However, when you're looking through the glass floor in the middle of the night, the scene looks like something out of an old DARK sci-fi film. The spotlights are so bright that all you can see are the foundations and the "legs" of the structure, while your peripheral vision is totally drowned out by the visual stimulation of what's front and center. It's like seeing something cut from Blade Runner, or a Stanley Kubrick film, perhaps something in the vein of Alien. You're looking down the side of some mid-sized spacecraft, maybe some sort of equivalent to our current-day airliners, or perhaps only a lounge section of a bigger ship. The glare shines off of the support legs and their crossbeams lower down, and behind it are the fainter lights of the park below; glowing beacons, and lights from windows on the hull... and it's all slowly rotating. Your mind just wanders and you feel like you're in some other universe with someone else's memories. My advice would be, regardless of whether or not you're a local or a tourist, to go on a fairly clear evening and just take in the view. It really is something else. I ran into some guy up there who even admitted to skipping out on work early so he could see the sunset and get in some night views.
I like originality. Wish I was old enough when I was there to remember it before remodeling. I enjoy seeing the past how they saw it. Now everything it to new and flashy!
Ugh I live in Washington so going to Seattle has always been so fun for me and my family and I’m so excited to go again I only live like 1 hour and 30 minutes away it’s so pretty 😂
I feel like the large windows were a bad idea! Now you’re probable going to feel enclosed and half the fun was having wind rush around when you’re at the top.
One of the highlights of being born and raised here, no question. I haven't seen it since the upgrades though, so I really gotta get off TH-cam lol and get out more!
I was just there 3 days ago and still mostly under construction. Restaurant was not accessable at all. That being said, it was fun to experience an iconic tourist attraction!!!
Wow! It's really beautiful, I love that you can see Seattle from all angles at the highest vantage point in the city! Can the homeless use it as a place for refuge?
Highest vantage point? Not even close. Go to the top of the Columbia Tower and you look down on the Space Needle. th-cam.com/video/KaSXaYHQkYs/w-d-xo.html
In 1961 it cost $5,000,000 and we are then led to believe that the upgrades will cost an order of magnitude more. But 5 million in 1961 is equivalent to 41 million today, so 100 million is just doubling the cost. Seattle is one of only two cities in the world known for its tower: the other obviously is Paris. The Space Needle is one of the greatest structures ever made!
It's nice to see the Space Needle get a face lift, but honestly I hate to see what the new ticket prices are going to be. I lived in Renton from 1996 to 2004. I use to go up to the Space Needle with my family all the time because it was cheap and we all loved walking around the Seattle Center. I came back to Seattle in 2011 and everything was priced so much more expensive. It's like Seattle doesn't want any one there but rich people living in or visiting the city.
I don't know if I could stomach eating at the rotating restaurant with a view 300 ft. down. I might lose my meal. I've been to the Space Needle just recently and the new glass panels actually tilt outward so if you lean on them, it feels like you're about to fall over. But the view is still amazing. Love this city!
janosKern I’ve actually eaten up there with my family but it was cloudy and gray. We went in November. What I was saying is if they added the glass panels on the floor and you look down as you’re eating would make me a little queasy.
My dad was an ironworker on the original building project putting in the sash and windows. So the Needle is like a younger sibling... Only much taller than the rest of the kids.
3:14 That's an FlySky FS-I6X, a radio of just $50.. I use it to fly my quadcopter, quite a cheap transmitter to crane your 1 ton weighing glass panel isn't it?
For alot of years after it opened there was nothing but a minimal railing you could lean over to look off the edge from outside and alot of thrown objects and bodies later they sequencely put up preventive barriers to prevent this, which with each time caged you in more and more taking away from the view and attraction to the needle. Been going there since 1975.
Hey smart guy. Do a quick search before trash talking a subject you know clearly nothing about! For your info. 9 people total have jumped off the Space Needle, 6 thankfully had a parachute 3 didn't purposely. 2 women and 1 man but this was shortly after it was built in the early 60s for the 1962 World Fair. A net was install that extended out far enough to prevent anyone further from jumping Other safety measures have been added over the years also fyi.
What's the cost to go up.The city I live near could use one of those but the locals would complain it would cast a shadow. I also thought it was much higher than 500 feet.
I blame Michael Jordan, if he stayed retired for 1 more year, they probably would have won the championship in 96' and Seattle would have never let them go.
My palms are getting sweaty just watching this video. I visited the needle I guess about two years ago and it was impressive.
Justin Miller, me too ,went there with family and we got really good time.
knees weak, arms are heavy
there's vomit on your sweater already
mom's spaghetti
Palms are sweaty, moms spaghetti 🍝 😱🤪😲🤔

Christopher Smith Good catch
Todays inflation was already taken into account...
If it was built today from scratch, I can't even see it being constructed for $41 million. Codeah I highly doubt that it cost just $600k to build this in 1962
Mitchell Kossoris 600k in 1962, in todays money 5m.
2:17 -- oops? someone get clunked on the head down below?
I'm sure they're fine. Or at least that's what the company hopes.
They have nets underneath to catch falling debris.
nope, not on this remodeling.
hahah great eye!!
LOOL
$5,000,000?... Umm that was $5M in 1961. So it's incomparable to $100,000,000 in 2018. $5M in 1961 adjusted for inflation is $42M today.
Yeah it was 42,506,000 in today's money
Basically half the price so it doubled in makeover
2:17 that metal rod falling is a huge safety hazard
I saw it.
Watch again and you eill see a white piece of metal go over the edge
Didn’t go far...that’s what the lifted flooring was for.
when you live in seattle... and didn’t think this was a big deal
Been up 30 years ago or so and I'd much rather be 600ft below watching laserfloyd.
When you live in Seattle you realize that most days, there is little to no view due to weather and the food is nothing to write home about. And on the days when there is a view I would rather fly Kenmore Air seaplanes over the city or take the Duck and get up-close and personal.
That dude DOES NOT look 81 I’d say he looks 65-75
I was in Bellingham, Washington last week and met a couple of people in their 80's that looked 60. I think people might just be a bit happier and healthier here letting them be healthier longer perhaps. Aging also happens rapidly once your body quits working or accidents happen. The difference between someone looking 75 or 80 is often just a matter of sickness and injury/bed rest.
He looks past his 70's for sure. Not before that.
@liAm lol what!?
liAm stfu he’s complimenting the man saying he looks youthful for his age.
I think most old peoples biggest mistake is becoming couch potatoes once they retire. I think the true secret to staying healthy during your golden years is to keep yourself busy physically and mentally.
I was there last year, and they have totally improved the view of the city. I last went up there in 1999.
I remember I visited this restaurant when I was 6 it was a amazing experience and the food was good
I hope the space needle never collapse
MY HATS OFF TO THOSE WHO CAN WORK ON THAT BUILDING....I COULD NEVER DO IT EVER ...CHEERS
My thoughts throughout the video: no, no, no, nope, not happening, nope, never.
Why mislead people by not using inflation adjusted numbers? $5 million in 1961 is equivalent to $42 million today.
the media loves drama and in any way to misrepresent statistics to drive a dumb point they'll go for it.
I knew that the "100 million" was too good to be true.
Sonya Miller, Girl you ROCK! Thrilled to see you are the Field Superintendent. Gary great job! Refreshing to see the joy in your face when reliving your creation from 1962. Awesome job! I can't wait to visit and experience the upgrade.
The glass floor lol. ultimate upskirt view
@junekid629 not if i have 200/20 vision
AHAHAHHA, BROO I DIDN'T EVEN THINK OF THAT LMAO
jon brenaculars
I wish i wasn't afraid of heights. I'm proud of being from Seattle, always will be. Still haven't been up there in 23 years of my life. It's on my list though.
Yeah yeah, the space needle is cool, but what about the seattle science center right next to it?? Now thats where the parties at😂😂
Really? I would love to visit Washington State one day, and possibly even live there, so I'll take all the advice that I can get. Kind greetings from Houston, Texas. :)
Ryan Smith good luck with the weather🤣 but if you like marijuana its a good place to go
Haha thanks; I will keep that in mind. I have been to Vancouver B.C. and loved it, so I want to see our side of the Pacific Northwest too.
Science is stupid
@@JA238979 can't beat Vancouver!
A damn well deserved makeover. We are going there for my mom's birthday in august! Can't wait!
Well did you have a good time?
I have a sneaking suspicioun that the work platform they used weighed more than 2,000 lbs.
At the start of this video, the reporter mentioned a "2,000 pound work platform." That has to be wrong. One of those glass panels alone weighs 2,000 pounds.
Lmao they never said they brought the glass up with. They probably took it up later
glass went up one piece at a time. long after the platform was hoisted into place. jeez not hard try listening.
If you watched the video he said each panel weighs a ton
Still one of the happiest days of my life. That I dreamt for all my life to be able to live in Seattle and visit the Space Needle and after traveling 3,300+ miles and everything I have overcome in my life. I actually got to achieve that goal.
2:33 What is inflation. I've never heard of that, must be something fake.
I'm with John Dickerson. It's unnerving to be sitting at dinner in such a "precarious" situation high above the ground. I have a feeling that in the future they will cover areas of that restaurant area with a carpet (that you cannot see through). By customer request.
What they're not telling you is and 1961 the federal reserve note had way more purchasing power that today's 100 million
Seattle is the best city on the west coast
Overrated cities in California < Portland = Seattle
Quinn Reverance Portland and Seattle are not in California
Leo Plotter wtf no that was me saying Portland and Seattle are better than any overrated city in Cali. Have u ever seen the greater than ”>” less than “
Quin Reverance why u gotta dis me like dat I like seattle but even San Francisco?:(
Not anymore. The opioid and homeless epidemic are totally out of control. The disintegrating streets are getting worse too. Hope a new more moderate council gets voted in later this year.
I live in lynnwood (seattle area) for 24 years and still haven't gone to the space needle, lolol
I've been to the Space Needle about two years ago, I loved it! But I wish I could buy a ticket to go again next year, and don't even get me started about my fear of heights.
Liar
I'm glad he was alive to see what he fully envisioned the Space Needle to be .
2:17 Did you see that metal rod drop!
I haven't been in the space needle since I was a little girl! I have no plans on going after this remodel 😂
I'll have To go back someday. I was there when I was 12 in 1962.
Went there today, was so much fun! I recommend going
I've always wanted to go see it, now that the glass floor is getting put in I just wanna go more!
Was there about 5 years ago and then again last week so I remember fairly well what it looked like and the difference is pretty awesome. It's a neat experience.
The Space Needle is amazing. it's so cool.
Amazing city
Has the speed of rotation ever been changed? Thank you, CBS for the feature.
This put a smile on my face cant wait for things to go back to normal cause i been wanting to visit
Favorite building in seattle❤❤❤

I see your evening view and I will raise you one. Walk across the Aurora Bridge at sunset on a nice evening.
I like originality. Wish I was old enough when I was there to remember it before remodeling. I enjoy seeing the past how they saw it. Now everything it to new and flashy!
I understand the love in San Antonio we did a renovation to our own iconic tower The Tower of the Americas.
Such a beautiful city.
Ugh I live in Washington so going to Seattle has always been so fun for me and my family and I’m so excited to go again I only live like 1 hour and 30 minutes away it’s so pretty 😂
Sarcasm
I really hope I get to visit the Space Needle one day. I have been to Seattle before, just not the Space Needle ☹️
I feel like the large windows were a bad idea! Now you’re probable going to feel enclosed and half the fun was having wind rush around when you’re at the top.
Really cool!
The fact he's standing on top of the needle without pissing his pants. *appluase*
What about the homelessness issue in Seattle
One of the highlights of being born and raised here, no question.
I haven't seen it since the upgrades though, so I really gotta get off TH-cam lol and get out more!
I was just there 3 days ago and still mostly under construction. Restaurant was not accessable at all. That being said, it was fun to experience an iconic tourist attraction!!!
I love the space needle
It deafly needed Am upgrade. I was there for two years ago and it was definitely very 1960s
I've been to the space needle to visit twice. The last time I was there they was starting to construction. I'll have to back to revisit
So much to say. It's beautiful. Go there and have a beer up there and walk around. Its so cool.
2:17 something falls
In 1961 it cost $5,000,000 and we are then led to believe that the upgrades will cost an order of magnitude more. I Highly doubt the 100million price tag
I was there last week. It wasn't bad, then again I'm not afraid of heights.
This was neat, thanks CBS.
New visitors to the Space Needle shouldn't throw stones!
I love the Space Needle.
❤❤👍😀👍❤❤
I better go check it out. Haven’t been to the Space Noodle for at least 25 years. I always loved it and used to go once a year or more. The company I work for fabricated a lot of the hardware used in the revamped transparent revolving floor, so I’d like to see that.
Just watching this makes my stomach drop.
Just imagine being that badass dude that designed this.
awesome. Driving to Seattle this October
Seattle is one of only two cities in the world known for its tower: the other obviously is Paris. The Space Needle is one of the greatest structures ever made!
Sad I wasn’t able to check out the space needle before the update. But I know it’s going to be awesome. That view! LOVE LOVE LOVE 💙💚 This is sweet. 💯
The girls sound mean to Dickerson....
Seattle, is an amazing city, with many many gifts to offer. Soak them in..
The song is called feeling electric! Great song
One of our greatest family vacations, Seattle worlds fair.
Woohoo! I live in Tacoma, right by Seattle! I can't wait to see the new space needle improved. Thank you! :)
The Gilhouli glass display at the base is a must visit
Gilhouli? Or Dale Chihuly Glass Garden at the base?

Misha Melissa The restaurant is actually about 500 feet high. So no need to feel uneasy about looking 300 feet down.
janosKern I’ve actually eaten up there with my family but it was cloudy and gray. We went in November. What I was saying is if they added the glass panels on the floor and you look down as you’re eating would make me a little queasy.
That structure sure is strong to support all that glass Wright 👏👏👏
This just reminds me of iCarly and my childhood
It would have been awesome if the cast of "iCarly" shot an episode of the show on location in Seattle.
You’re probably too young to remember Frasier, but let’s not forget Frasier!!!
th-cam.com/video/7b1VNVAqbfE/w-d-xo.html
getting ready to take off
Glad to ee the Space Needle finally got the vision suppose to be.
Soooo COOL !!!!!! need to go and see it one more time !!!!!
My dad was an ironworker on the original building project putting in the sash and windows. So the Needle is like a younger sibling... Only much taller than the rest of the kids.
It stresses me so much even looking at the space needle let alone going up there
I was there last year and my fear of heights just couldn’t let know go up in that building.

Wtf there hasn’t been a single person that has fallen off of the space needle, stop lying 😂😡🤦♀️
Hey smart guy. Do a quick search before trash talking a subject you know clearly nothing about!

Great video. Well produced.
Wow!
What's the cost to go up.The city I live near could use one of those but the locals would complain it would cast a shadow. I also thought it was much higher than 500 feet.
Can’t wait to go see
Wow nicely done!
Bring back the Sonic's
I blame Michael Jordan, if he stayed retired for 1 more year, they probably would have won the championship in 96' and Seattle would have never let them go.
that is going to be very nice when done.
I went there as a child in the later 60's. I was scared to death.
2:15 im sure that was safe to just fall
Yo it suck I didn’t get to see the finish results when I was there a couple of months ago but was still really nice to see the views 💯
Its extra fun to crawl on it c:
Did anyone else see the metal piece fall at 2:17 and thought “well someone’s dead” 😂
I went on this as a child in the 80s. I was trying to remember if it really spun or if I was imagining this.
