I thought that long pause after you took a bite was because the cake was so dry, it sucked all the moisture out of his mouth and his gums were glued together. I do not say this as a joke. I once had a bite of 15 year old pound cake from an MRE. Tasted pleasant, slightly vanilla, but it pulled all the saliva from your mouth, formed into a small ball, and then tried to hide under my tongue, making speech nearly impossible. I had to pry it out with my fingers because I could not dislodge it any other way. Now I know what the grape jelly was for; Pound cake lubricant.

Reminds me of B&M Brand Brown Bread, which also comes in a can. My grandparents always brought some with them when they came to visit. It, too was in a can, and was baked in the can. Pretty good, too. Sort of gingerbread-y with raisins. Great with a hot cup of tea. I have to see if I can find it, now. See what you did?
Hey nothing is lost once the cake is finished, after the first 2 years there is still hope for celebration. Picture the scene: You and family have been in the bunker for 6 years now and there is no end in sight for the apocalypse. Tomorrow marks young Tony's 9th birthday, you are sitting in the living quarters and Tony is beside himself with excitement for tomorrow is the day he gets to play with the birthday cake can which is bought out but 3 times a year - Once for Mum who likes to place her can neatly next to her bed and reminisce of fond memories from past birthdays whilst appreciating the cans vibrant colours; Once for Dad who enjoys filling his can with moonshine just once a year, and clutching it whilst a warm fuzzy feeling washes over him if you look closely Dads can is starting to bend slightly where Dad has gripped it tightly over the years; Then finally once for young Tony who has not yet settled on a tradition for his birthday can but this year he thinks he will wear it as a hat all day long and sing birthday songs that bring joy to them all as they are grateful they are still here and cling to the hope that the next birthday will be spent breathing the fresh air above ground.

They should have included some sort of decoration. Or people will have to pop out into the nuclear wasteland in the middle of the nuclear winter & try to find a shop open which has birthday cake candles. Now I haven't had to do that in a nuclear winter obviously, but honestly if you have forgotten to get the candles for the cake & its getting late, it can be hard enough to find somewhere that sells little candles in a normal winter. I resorted to actually making some one year. Fortunately I had some candle wick of a suitable diameter & was able to melt down some old bits of candle in a bain-marie & dip the wicks to create some interesting little candles. Fortunately the recipient just took it as a compliment that I had made the candles as well as the cake.

It might be a nice challenge to develop a recipe for your own bread or cake in a can. I have seen videos on TH-cam for "canning" bread. Japan has nice fluffy bread products in a can in vending machines, so it CAN be done.
The main use for this I could see is writing Happy birthday on it and hiding it in someones house at a completely random time of the year, hoping they randomly stumble across it before the two year expiration is up I wonder how long a typical safeway muffin would last for, those are pretty much cake anyway, I've only seen those dry out, not mold. Maybe if you stuck one in a can it might compete with this thing in eatability duration

Thete are places in Siberia, Alaska, Northern Australia, Greenland, Patagonia etc where fresh products do not exist. By the time they are deluvered their shelf life has expired. So canned products are highly saught after! We are not all as well supplied as your community.
