The Foundations of Modern 40k | Andy Chambers in Conversation

  • Andy Chambers was lead designer, AKA the Overfiend, for 40K 3rd Edition and was arguably the person most responsible for evolving it into the foundations of the modern game.
Starting with White Dwarf articles for Space Marine & Adeptus Titanicus, writing Battle Magic and Warhammer Armies: Skaven for Fantasy Battle, and then leading the development of 40K and working on at least 12 Codex books! And that's not to mention Necromunda, Battlefleet Gothic, and Gorka Morka. Plus more recently the 2000AD and Judge Dredd games for Warlord Games.
Andy and I talk about his career at Games Workshop, the art of developing 40K and other GW classics, and his more recent work on new games like Judge Dredd.

It’s so cognitively dissonant to me to see Andy Chambers not looking like Wolverine in a grainy photo in the front of White Dwarf. He was the most iconic figure of the ‘90s gaming scene for me… always loved seeing him pop up in battle reports or writing bits for White Dwarf.

Yes it’s interesting that I’ll always associate GW WD staffers with their 90s pictures and then I get weirdly shocked when they come on these podcasts and I realise they’re not immortal ☹️

Andy Chambers did an amazing/incredible job with that Skaven army book: One of the best at the time along with the Undead Army book which was also so chock full of lore/flavour and more as well. Right about how much rested on the RPG in Warhammer... and the minute they stopped doing that.

Brilliantly conducted and fascinating interview. I met Andy at a Games Day back in about 1996. I would have been about 10 and I was awed and terrified to see this larger-than-life face from the pages of White Dwarf. He was incredibly cool and sweet with me and all the other kids and I will never forget it.

Also Andy makes a great point about 200AD being the wellspring. Would make a cool video to do a dive into all the 200AD elements in 40k (some are pretty obvious in Rogue Trader but they're always there). Dune elements too obviously.

I feel like Andy knew I was listening. I was quite put off when my Orks lost their Plasma Guns and Heavy Bolters. I never complained officially, but I did complain. Just ask my friends. Lol, it's all good now. Furthermore, I have a huge army of metal Squats. They will see action in our Age of Darkness games. 40k has been a part of my life for more years than it hasnt. Dang these GW guys made a major masterpiece of a game. ❤️👍

I love GorkaMorka.. Sad it did not take off more.. I also like Epic 40k, but I do like the previous edition as well as Epic Armageddon too.. Epic 40k´s system seems to work better for BFG or similar.. Which is a great game by the way.
Andy Chambers always seemed like one of the more nice and interesting guys.. I loved him especially after the 3rd Ed 40k Ork rules. it felt as if he cared and tried to give others, others other than Beakiez, some stuff.. Thank you Andy. :)
My first time seeing him was in the RT Space Wolves vs Orks Battle Report with jervis and I was into the SWs so... Yeah. Hat´s off sir!
And thanks Jordan for this vid!

    Awesome interview Jordan.
I have fond memories of the 13th Black Crusade. I was on the Chaos side, and we had to organise our faction using Yahoo groups. Each Legion would have a representative, and based on the previous week's results, we would dorect our games at a specific area of the campaign map. I was the Emperor's Children representative and took our orders back to the EC Yahoo Group for people to enact. Our groups got a thank from Andy in the Black Library lore book about the conflict.

Fantastic interview with someone who's had quite an influence on my life!
I dropped out of 40K when 3rd Ed came out. Partly it was the time in my life and partly I was put off by the hard reset and simplification. But I regret not having picked up the rulebook. Interestingly enough, it was the Ork Codex for that new edition of the game - which I'm pretty sure Andy wrote - that got me back into the game. That was the lense through which I was able to appreciate what that hard reset enabled. Still a big fan of that book!

This all confirms that WARHAMMER has outgrown not only Games Workshop, but also their original creators.
Because I am Warhammer as my hobby is for my soul and heart, but for Games Workshop it is only a matter of money.
But the creators who left GW are also not “free” artists, they also want money. They also now work for GW's competitors. They also weren't able to create anything close to Warhammer on their own.
So nothing in the world will stop me from continuing to enjoy Warhammer Age of Sirmar and hate the Old World! Because it's cool, this is my life!

His comments regarding the dudebro marines made me smile a bit too. I'm a die hard Guard fan/player since I took up the hobby at the tail end of 3rd. Never had more than a passing interest in marines, or a love/hate thing at best. The way GW push them now is just obnoxious. Custodes and the Votan-thingies are just marines in disguise too. The glory days of 3rd/4th Ed. are long gone.

@@il_solitario55 absolutely, I’ve been playing 40k since ‘91 in the heady days of Rogue Trader and what GW is doing for its ‘main’ games is lowbrow trash. Don’t get me wrong (most of) the minis get better and better but the writing, lore and background … absolute garbage.

The 'success breeds success' remark is correct, though. And some of it is economics - don't Space Marines still require the smallest starting investment re number of miniatures? I remember back in 2nd edition giving up on buying orks because you needed to buy (and buy enough paint for) 2 or 3 times the number of models.

I think peoples memory must be on the blink. Spacemarines have always been the poster boys of 40K. I think we look back with rose tinted glasses. The game at times in early edtions was outright broken at times we just did not have the internet tell us it was so nobody care. I love the the original rogue trader it sparked a world in which I would be completely captured in. However the reality is the rules are unplayable. We complain today about the prices but hardly anyone that was a teenager when 40k came out had an army. We all had a few models we played with but the idea we had a complete army never happened.
If I had a choice I would rather be a kid today and play this version with all those amazing model, advancement in paint, hobby tools, support in youtube videos. I dont regret starting in the 80's, I look at it often with rose tinted glasses but I dont want to be this old grumpy man that trashes the modern version because it is great.

@@redscope897 Many of the new minis are great, certainly, but not all of them, and the mono-pose style is a trade-off, good or bad depending on preference. I don't agree that the paints/tools have improved at all. Many of GW's current paints are too thin and the pots are increasingly smaller. GW's tools have been consistently crap since about 2017ish. Marines have always been the poster boys, yes, but they've been reduced to a soulless cash cow(much like the IP in general) and the bias in marketing them has become laughably blatant, almost to the point of self-parody. The marine range is now bigger than several other factions put together. The greed and ruthlessness of the bigwigs has now far outstripped any interest in maintaining a good quality IP. The newer factions - Custodes and Votan - are marines in all but name - dudes in power armour with big guns and even bigger dicks. Just more of the same. GW would never attempt anything as interesting or ambitious as the Tau under the current regime. As for the rules, well, I think their recent rules are easier to grasp than some of the older ones, certainly in terms of core rules, but these are bogged down with convoluted nonsense like detachment special rules, command point stratagem thingies, formations, this special rule, that special rule etc. The game isn't about tactics or gambling on dice rolls anymore, it's a list-building exercise. It's all about the "meta". Games are won and lost on paper/aps instead of on the tabletop.
