    Before anyone gets arrogant and make it seem like the Pilot's fault, how about getting your facts straight.
    If you looked properly, you would see that when you pause at 6:57 there is a small plane taking up the runway. There is no way that the pilot could have landed on that runway or he would have crushed the small plane. He was likely instructed by Air Traffic Control to divert because the small plane hadn't moved in time.

      +XxVicissitudexX There are 2 parallel runaways at Sydney airport. The runway you can see in the video with the small aircraft on it was not the runway we were going to land at. There is no way of knowing why we didn't land. The only announcement the pilot made was that he had 'missed the approach'. I presume this meant he had missed the landing window before another plane was scheduled to take off. Which is probably due to an over crowded airport with very short windows between planes landing and planes taking off. The is the first time of flying into Sydney airport for more than 25 years that I have experienced an aborted landing. Actually first aborted landing ever in any airport!

      +NowGetThere A missed approach is just the proper way to refer to an "aborted landing" as you call it. The pilot was simply stating that he was conducting a missed approach, it would have had nothing to do with missing a landing window. If this was the case they would have much earlier either, vectored around or sent into a holding pattern, not what is shown in the video. . There is many reasons why a missed approach is conducted, without further information it would be impossible to tell, but it is very very unlikely that it was the pilots fault.

      Quite correct Alex. A 'missed approach' is just a generic term. Given the amount of traffic the most likely reason is insufficient safe separation from the preceding landing aircraft. Sorry 'NowGet There', but landing aircraft have right of way. There is no way an aircraft would be asked to go around just because someone else was scheduled to take off at that time. It's more difficult for ATC to fit another landing into an already crowded traffic pattern and probably costs the airline thousands of dollars to do. Holding an aircraft to wait for take-off on the ground is much easier to do and costs less.

      XxVicissitudexX Sydney YSSY is an extremely busy, but not to mention controlled airport. As others have said, the runway seen with the "small aircraft" is not the one that the aircraft was on approach to. Sydney has some the best, air traffic controllers in Australia. They would never direct another aircraft, let alone an aircraft that size, on the runway before any approach, unless the aircraft is, for instance, Baron, or TBM, which aren't seen my at Kingsford Smith very often, or at all. The pilot simply missed the approach, it's not to worry.

      Even if it was the runway they were landing on it looks like that small aircraft was only just lining up onto the runway.

    Good video, pretty rare to get a missed approach on video. It was more than likely due to the aircraft in front taking too long to clear the runway after landing or dawdling before take off. Not anything the pilots of your aircraft did, or that the pilot had literally "missed the approach". From what I can tell as a passenger/interested bystander the term missed approach is pretty much applied to any reason an approach must be abandoned.

    • @AlexanderMcAllister
      @AlexanderMcAllister 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Ben Smith In aviation, the term "missed approach" refers to the actual procedure that is flown in the event of an aborted landing, and involves a specified track, altitude, speed and climb gradient that must be adhered to. The public perception is to always blame it on a 'bad pilot,' when in reality it is usually due to something out of the pilots' control and can be anything from an air traffic control instruction to a strong unexpected gust of wind on final approach.

    If you knew anything about the cesspit called Sydney airport, this occurrence happens almost daily due to congestion, made worse when winds limit the airport to one runway. What did you expect the pilot do, land on top of another plane ! Its Virgin actually being safe by doing the go around.

    • @mattdinko9865
      @mattdinko9865 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      THANK YOU! This guy is clearly an imbecile who knows nothing about air travel, especially at a busy airport.

    • @mitchelljj3860
      @mitchelljj3860 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Firstly, there is not even close to a 'go around' or 'missed approach' daily at Sydney airport. What a ludicrous over-exaggeration. Secondly, the east-west runway is used on off-peak times. It doesn't therefore cause more missed approaches. They revert back to the parallel ops during peak times. Thirdly, any go around due to traffic is called by ATC, it's not 'virgin pilots being safe' and finally, the pilot announced 'missed approach' and from the altitude seen in the video, it appears more likely the pilot did conduct a 'missed approach' due to an incorrectly configured aircraft at the 1000 foot landing gate, not a 'go around' as per ATC command.

    It's not called aborted landing it's called missing the airport aborted landing is when there is either a problem or if it's too turbulent in the landing that's when you touch the ground and go back up

    • @mitchelljj3860
      @mitchelljj3860 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      It's actually called a 'missed approach'.... 'Aborted landing' is not even a real term. Touching the runway and 'going back up' is called a touch and go and is done purposely, in a controlled manner, not as a result of an 'aborted landing' as you call it. Your comment couldn't be any more factually incorrect in every single way

    I would rather be 15 minutes late then of had a crash anyday, anything could have gone wrong I highly doubt he ment he missed the approach as that is the fancy term for aborted landing anything from air traffic control telling them to go into a holding pattern to there is another plane on the runaway to wind changing direction

      +PoorPatrician That was my first flight with Virgin! And probably my last! They have 100% late arrival for my experience. And first aborted landing ever in 25 years of regular flights for me!
      How does a pilot 'miss the approach'?

    • @poorpatrician9488
      @poorpatrician9488 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      NowGetThere I don't like how they describe themselves as a "New World Carrier" they only give you half the food and drinks free, charge you ridiculous baggage fees and ask you to download an app for your phone for in flight entertainment (which I honestly hate doing, my phones rather slow) they're destinations are horrible compared to that of Qantas (VA will get you to Abu Dhabi, LAX and Bali and QF will get you to San Francisco, Tokyo, Hong Kong, Singapore, Johannesburg, Dallas, London etc.) whilst Qantas aren't perfect in any way they still beat Virgin by a landslide IMO

    • @mattdinko9865
      @mattdinko9865 9 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Virgin is a fantastic airline! There is nothing bad or dangerous about a missed approach and they happen more often than you think. I only fly with them or sometimes Qantas.
