2:00 some people like to build their own cars as opposed to going to a dealer and buying new. Where there is a hobby, people will want custom things.

I’m a bit of a keyboard enthusiast! Last year while building my work and gaming pc, I treated myself to a Corsair K70 with blue switches. I know some of the hardcore people like to rag on blue switch/clicky switch users, but personally, I like them as they remind me of the keyboards I’d use use school in the 90’s. After getting the k70, I subsequently bout 2 60% boards. One for when I’m working in Photoshop and another for my iPad Pro. Can’t see myself making a complete keyboard from scratch as I don’t have the patience to learn how to solder, but I do like collecting key cap sets!

I've got the brown switches on my K70 and I find them the perfect balance between typing and gaming switches without the really loud clicky sounds. Super nice actuation and a solid sound when they bottom out. Plus super sensitive actuation from the top of the stroke all the way through. Each to their own though right?

I was never for the custom keyboard scene. My sister built her own one and I thought it was neat but I couldn't justify spending $500 on a keyboard. Until one day about 2 weeks ago I bit the bullet. I spent a week putting it together. Lubed and filmed every switch, modded the keyboard, waited 2 months for keycaps alone. It's the best feeling keyboard I've ever had in my entire life and I never want to go back again. As someone who enjoys building things, Gundams and what not, it was quite pleasing all the way through.

you can get kits where you just put switches and keycaps on and you're good to go

Just bought a gmmk compact. Glorious brown and some pbt key caps. Lubed all the switches, stabilisers need some treatment as well. I really enjoy it, would encourage everyone to get on this journey, you will enjoy your keyboard even more

I was exclusively in to prebuilt keyboards for pretty much most for of my life. Every time I buy a new keyboard, it was usually overpriced or just a cheap piece of plastic that came from China with mechanical switches that scratch or just have bad connection quality if it were wireless. I tried most of them and I was never truly happy with them in the end no matter what I got.
I was scared when I first got the parts for a custom keyboard because somewhere in the back of my mind, there was this nagging feeling that I was going to mess it up by bending the pins on the switches or putting too much lubrication in them, etc. When I started building my keyboard, it was oddly therapeutic. It's like building a model that actually serves a function rather than just having a pretty display piece (although, some people actually build keyboards for display o_0). Once I started typing on it, I can now settle on a keyboard that is actually comfortable for me to type and game on. As I type, the sound of the switches make a nice and low "thock" sound that I was listening for. I'm one happy camper!!

If you get the bare bones version, you only get the "ascend" and "glorious" keys and you need to get your own keycaps. I'm making my own resin keycaps for fun. I have the GMMK 1.0 with the 10-key.

Cool to see your thoughts on this, I picked up the GMMK compact (60% version of this) no too long ago as this was one of the few ways I could get a UK layout keyboard with the type of switches id (blindly) decicded on (went with kailh speed silver). Definitely impressed with it! Only complaint is that the paint on the 'Ascend' keycap rubs away after a little while, but not that big a deal.

I have an eye disease, I NEED a keybaord that is backlit with strictly WHITE keys. Not RGB just white. I found a nice one that happened to have nice cherry mechaniocal switches and white backlights so I can read the keys. Awesome. $70

Dude... If you think this is neat, check out the GMMK Pro. It's this keyboard on steroids and then given that juice they gave Bane in Batman.

I DID check it out, decided against it as I couldn't find a way to justify the WAY higher price. for a bastardised ins/del/pgup/pgdown layout, cramped arrow keys (I use these frequently in video editing) and a little knob for volume.

Im a keyboard guy just like you down to the 60% and the fear i might get sucked in by custom keyboards.

Top of my checklist: extra macro keys + good software for full customization. I realize that the advent of addon panels like the streamdeck, have made macro keyboards less popular. For me, I'd rather have the same software for all my macros. Need the tenkey as I actually still use mine regularly.
Currently sporting a Steelseries Apex 350 (alongside my Rival 500)...which was discontinued by Steelseries. They discontinued the king of macro keyboards. They make no keyboards I want anymore. I'd love for them to get out of their esports fascination and back to making the king of macro keyboards. I have not found a replacement that has updated features. This has happened before...with me and trackballs....I went to mice after Logitech didn't bother to update their trackball line with the new features mice were getting. Sigh.
That said I still love the Steelseries software...and use it between my 350 and 500.
Yeah...keyboard nerd looking for a new home....this is a nice keyboard, but not what I want.

If I didn’t have a limitation called my bank account, I would probably buy into the REALLY high end custom keyboard scene 😂 right now I use a Glorious GMMK Pro which to me is a good compromise for a low-ish price (in comparison to extremely expensive custom boards)
Even though lubing switches can be annoying, it can also be pretty relaxing and I like spending my time watching videos on TH-cam and not necessarily wasting my time by making my keyboard switches sound and feel a bit better

i may or may not be obsessed with keyboards. but the one difference from me and all the other enthusiasts is that they have the money to buy 19 $1000 keyboards lol he he

I appreciate your tech reviews, they are always so informative. I have actually been looking into getting myself a decent keyboard recently. With so much variety it's hard to decide where to start so I was excited to see you talk about a keyboard. Thank you for this.

I also think that hyper-expensive one-of-a-kind keyboards are a bit superfluous. I see a keyboard as a tool and not as a toy. But I also dislike mainstream boards as they nearly never meet my needs. I changed my key layout from QWERTY to Colemak DH and require a keyboard that can be fully customizable, not just the lighting, and I've only seen one or two companies that do this. Also, if someone were to spend such a large amount of money on a custom keyboard it should be spent on improving the ergonomics so it can justify the price for being something different and not just a more expensive version of the cheap keyboard that you found at your local electronics store.

Blunty, try cherry brown. My favorite switch of all! These seem a little softer from sound than my Corsair K70 with cherry browns which are perfect for typing and soft enough for gaming too in my opinion. The sweet spot for mechanical switches.

That's why consumer choice is wonderful. 60% or TKL boards are perfect for some people, just like full-size are excellent for other people.
