Breath of the Wild: Does the Forgotten Temple PROVE the Tetraforce Theory?

  • While there have been many famous theories within the Zelda community, one has stood out ever since the days of the Nintendo 64. Through evidence found within Ocarina of Time, speculation began on the existence of a 4th triforce piece. This theory would be later dubbed "The Tetraforce Theory".
Even after Nintendo has come out and denied it's existence, people still believe that the theory is true. But does Breath of the Wild shed any light on this well-known theory? That's what I look at today as we explore the mysterious Forgotten Temple!

I feel like there is some hint about the tetra force we have power wisdom and courage so if we go back to four swords it says the foursword splits link into three personas of the tri force but wait there's a fourth link by looking on this theory I can actually claim but I'm not certain it is a big hint but just what if ...the fourth link ...is the tetra force but since we have power wisdom courage all what makes up the world but there's one thing missing there is spirit so what if the tetra force is actually supposed to give the user unrestricted magic since we see Zelda characters always having some item to use magic

I always thought that fourth triangle on the OoT Hylian Shield was representative of Hylia, just like the others represented Din, Nayru and Farore. The three creators above, the guardian loftwing, and the goddess born mortal.

I think I know what the "fourth piece" represents. Each of the pieces of the triforce resents a key personality trait, namely the ambition for power, the humility of wisdom, and the will of courage, so what possible trait would be the natural combination of all three? What trait would be powerful enough to both to be found when all three are combined, both a catalyst their unity and beholdent to their unification? A trait that represents all these aspects working in tandem and that gives the triforce the ability to grant wishes?
    It's purpose.
To fulfil a purpose, you have to have the wisdom to know how, the power to be able to complete it, and the courage to act on it.
To wish upon the triforce is to grant it purpose. To assemble the triforce, one must have an ultimate purpose to their actions.
It's why its both there and missing, depending on the players interpretation, because it's their purpose that drives them to play through the game. It's why it's the only piece to not have a physical form, because while power, wisdom and courage are consistent entities, no one player has the same purpose, and each one is decided outside of the realm of the game.
It's the Zelda series as a whole, the power that comes from your arsenal, the wisdom required to outsmart a puzzle, and the courage to try and best any challenge that the game throws at you. It adds up to beating the game: the reason for playing.
It's in BOTW too, with the unification of all three pieces and players in the final battle being the ultimate purpose of the game. And with it being the most open zelda game of them all, that fourth piece is the most elusive it's ever been. It requires much more of the player to find it, and sometimes it is forgotten. The only way you'd find yourself at the forgotten temple is to have stumble so far off the beaten track your overall goals are forgotten, left at the wayside as your venture into it, only to find that giant goddess statue, and realise that maybe your purpose was forgotten after all, merely altered by your own curiosity, by your own desire for fun, your new purpose.

Kt Ash I totally agree! I started with Zelda II at age 8 and I’m currently OBSESSED with BOTW! The immersion and the soundtrack are what get me the most, but the storyline really drives it home as well. Also, if the last boss fight seemed easy or incomplete, it’s probably because they’re setting it up for the sequel. I mean Calamity was obviously just another projection, and Dark Beast was pure malice, so we really didn’t even FIGHT Ganon directly. Only his essence. The sequel will fill in the gaps.

There is no fourth piece when all the other parts are together, even when they're at their full giant size and actively granting wishes. Besides, we just call that completed relic the Triforce. Not the Tetraforce or the Quaddroforce or the Fource. They're sometimes referred to as the Golden Power or the Triumph Forks, though. I wish more people would pay attention to the dichotomy of the Golden Power and the Silver Arrows, which feature in a few of the early games and are necessary to beat Ganon, who generally has the Triforce of Power.

I remember there was an interview or official statement from the makers that the Triforce and the Triforce pieces were called Triforce because of the shape, not the number of pieces. Therefor, no matter how many pieces there are, it would always be Triforce, never tetraforce or pentaforce or whatever.
If your theory of the fourth Triforce piece being formed by uniting all three pieces is true, then it would form a pentaforce, not a tetraforce, since, using your own explanation by use of the "how many squares" puzzle, there would be five triangles.
The Triforce pieces were created by the very act of the three goddesses leaving the world and the pieces appeared in the precise location where the goddesses left. The only other Goddess, the fourth Goddess, ever mentioned in the series is Hylia. She never left the world but stayed behind to protect and guide the people and protect the Triforce pieces of the other goddesses. Since she never left, no Triforce piece associated with Hylia was created. The argument can be made that Hyilia's realm of power is time, not light...but there is also enough evidence to suggest that it is light, not time...or maybe both time and light...

Justice is too blind and neutral to be a virtue. I believe that the fourth piece is Heart cause of how Love also plays a huge role in the series than just wisdom, power, and courage. Also that the fourth piece would also act as like a core for the complete Triforce, hence the name Triforce of Heart.
Not to mention the fourth piece is proven to exist physically. This theory about optical illusions is wrong.

    • @raditzace
      @raditzace 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

lets say it does exist. what could it mean?
justice? possible, but doesnt connect to the story very well.
balance? highly possible. you cant have 1 piece and not the others. one cannot exist without the other. also why the triforce split up when gannondorf touched it in ocarina as he wasnt as brave as link (was going to steal ocarina and/or kill to acquire), or as smart as zelda (who saw through his ruse).
light force? again, plausible as they might have had the thought planned out, and a lot of zeldas attack involve a triangle.
completion or being whole? very possible as in order to be complete you need all 3 in your life; power to fight for belief, knowledge to know what and how to say something, and the courage to face the world for what you belive is right. you need all 3 to be complete. could also represent the story being a whole world on its own. different from balance as balance is required to obtain triforce while having all three makes you feel complete.

Considering the Judeo-Christian parallel of the three goddesses, and the Christian iconography in the early games. While not literally something that exists, I'm going to say love is the metaphoric core of the Triforce. The thing that will make it used for good instead of evil.

So I took a look at the map of Breath of the Wild and started to draw some lines on it. Connecting the Goron, Zora, Gerudo and Rito settlements and drawing two diagonal lines I ended up in a place just east of Hyrule Castle with the eastern-most pillar sticking out, nothing there. Then I tried connecting the three mazes whose center point is in a spot just to the north-east of that area, in the small lake that's the farthest south-west of the Woodland Tower. Connecting the Kakariko, Hateno and Lurelin statues and I ended with a triangle whose center is almost exactly Hateno Tower. So I tried connecting those three center points and I ended up in the Lanayru Wetlands, rather close to Kakariko once again.
So finally I drew lines between the three Springs of Power and determined its center, which turned out to be Vah Ruta. Vah Ruta is an ancient Divine Beast shaped like an elephant, but what does that have to do with the Tetraforce? Well, back in the Miocene there was a genus of elephantoids (some 10.9 million years ago) related to the Gomphothere, which had double the number of tusks that today's elephants have. Now, these particular elephantoids had large teeth (six times the size of human teeth) with a quartet of ridges to easily gring vegetative material. Because this paticular animal was identified by its teeth it was named after its four-ridged tooth: _Tetralophodon._
That's right. _Tetra._ Right in the center of the gathering of the power of the gods. So does that mean that Vah Ruta is the Tetraforce? No, it means that just like Vah Ruta the Tetraforce is an ancient relic of the past.

The Triforce was made when the 3 other goddesses left. Hylia didn't leave--she reincarnated to Zelda to hold off Malice. No exit (yet) = no 4th piece. If Nintendo would just let us purify Gannon (hydrate?) separating him from Malice, the 3 heroes would have a chance at defeating Malice once and for all, breaking the curse, the cycle of reincarnation, allow Hylia to pass on from this world / leave, creating the 4th piece, and ending one of Nintendo's most lucrative franchises. I'm just kidding, you can totally tell more of the same story with some new baddie stealing the 4th piece, and 3 heroes using the power of the remaining 3 to stop them. See? You can crank this out forever, and we'll still buy it (especially me).

    • @juanferrer5924

BigDadDirtbag II no- straight from a game design perspective, there’s a lot of flaws. Exploring the overworks is fun but repetitive. Shrines repeat themselves and the lack of themes makes them monotonous and eventually uninteresting once all the complex ones are beaten. NONE of the divine beasts were big enough and imo Ruta was the only one that felt like a dungeon. It was clear that the game was developed with the sandbox thing in mind but the game’s greatest asset is the physics and the size of the world map. The actual combat is very plain and the weapons break so fast players end up hoarding their best weapons so they don’t break, instead of using them. The lack of music COULDVE been poignant but instead it was just lackluster.
Even disregarding all of that, a game should ALWAYS be made with bias in mind. Changing the Zelda formula doesn’t mean making a game stop frog like Zelda. And that’s exactly what happened- the game stopped having that feeling, and that, that’s the kinda thing that fans will notice 100% of the time. They might not be able to say more than ‘it doesn’t feel like Zelda’ but as a game designer, that’s enough of a problem in and of itself when the whole reason people buy Zelda games is because of the Zelda feeling.

Well if we want to get all metaphysical/symbolic, with the triforce we could have a pentaforce
    1. Wisdom
    2. Power
    3. Courage
    4. Void/darkness (upside down middle)
    5. Balance(whole)
Note how in this model to get balance you must also have the darkness _contained_ within in negative pointing the opposite way
It should also be noted: that twilight princess does suggest that darkness need not be evil, and that many easter philosophies have the concept of the sacred darkness and/or the power of nothingness, so having the upside down triangle representing nothingness/darkness, and having it be a necessary part of the greater whole would fitting in it's way, and strictly speaking there would still only be three actual pieces of the triforce

I'm surprised you didn't mention the Horned Statue.
I've had my own theories about that extra triangle in the past. However, what if, much like some discarded stories in the Torah, this horned statue was a 4th goddess at one point? This nameless goddess decided to take advantage of the creatures to gain worship or the like to gain power over the other goddess'. This turned her into a demon. Thus resulting in Hylia revoking her god-like powers and sealing her away as a statue. Thus, the symbol of the triforce (or tetraforce in this case) served as a reminder of the fallen, but still existing, nameless goddess.
Now, granted, this statue has no mention in OoT or...any other game, really, but she was sealed away long long ago, and was eventually regarded as a myth. Could be a reason why you never saw her in any other game.
    Theories are fun.

There are several minor deities in Zelda lore. Such as the Goddess of Sand that used to be worshipped by the Gerudo in OoT; Majora, the spirit sealed inside its eponymous mask; Hylia herself, who didn't exist until Skyward Sword retconned everything (and she's represented by the bird under the Triforce on Hyrule's flag, not by anything to do with the Triforce itself); the Sages probably count as apotheosed deities (again, until Skyward Sword retconned them out of existence); the Fierce Deity sealed in his eponymous mask; Oshus, the guardian god of an alternate world's sea, the "spirits" from Spirit Tracks (who lived in a land far away from Hyrule that Tetra's pirates settled after Phantom Hourglass); and the list goes on.
Equally numerous are one-off tribes that only appear in one game, but clearly existed long enough to leave sprawling ruins, such as the Tribe of Darkness from Four Swords Adventures that were sealed into the Dark Mirror; the "demon tribe" ruled by Ghirahim, which may just refer to common monsters such as Bokoblins; the Wind Tribe from The Minish Cap; the Twili, the yetis, and whoever built that mountain fortress in Twilight Princess; and of course the Sheikah, who were always conveniently wiped out (all except for Impa) before the events of every game except Breath of the Wild.

Very interesting video. Now is it actually a tetraforce? With the missing piece being whitespace created by the collective power of the main three or a separate but forgotten idea that works along side the others in harmony? If the triforce works like that puzzle, the total triangles would actually be five; the main three, the center, and the whole. So is it actually a Pentaforce? If so, Hylia would probably be one, but what deity/concept would be the other? You kept expressing your thoughts like the center piece represents what the whole piece would be. Is there anything in Zelda symbolism that could lead to a -Pentakill- Pentaforce?
Would you mind making a video going over the missing Gerudo kings of BotW? They're supposed to have a male born every hundred years. They can't all be connected to the curse of Demise. Or are they just immediately exiled to avoid affiliation from the mistakes caused by when Ganondorf was a Gerudo?
Second video idea. Is there anything, between these other theories, new material in BotW, and such, that would connect back to the forgotten Goddess of the Sands? The goddess carved out of the Desert Colossus and within the Spirit Temple in OoT, and is most likely the same entity of the two statues in TP? Would be delightful.

I think the forgotten temple was still pretty much in use at the time of the calamity.
For instance, there are sooo many guardians!! And guardians showed up in important places were battle took place. And IF you take a closer look, all guardians have lost their legs, so a big battle was held in the forgotten temple.
Maybe the name of the temple has another meaning. The place could have been a huge canvas to tell the story of Hyrule, but was erroded due to the battle.
The goddess statue in that temple is yet the biggest, and goddess statue size is linked to the place importance.
So maybe the guardians were sent there to destroy the "stone memory" of hyrule so that the Malice could prevail...
The canyon were it is build is also and important landmark... since one of the 3 dragon spirits goes through it... I am thinking of a sacred place... made for pilgirmage. There might be other small structures around to serve as inns of restaurants.
    What do you think ?

It's look like Skyward Sword architecture, it's actually older than you think it is.
This Temple, I believe it is the second Temple of Time.
We are told that there is only 2 Gates of Time in Skyward Sword like there was only two sacred Springs, we have now Lanyaru Spring of Wisdom in BOTW.
I believe there is also a third Gate of Time hidden in the forgotten Temple, the Gate of Time symbol is in the Throne Room at the Castle.
Sheikah Monks, their Technology, they were from a far away past when Hylia was still a Goddess, they mention her name multiple times.
The forgotten Temple is were I believe, they had built the Divine Beasts and Guarduians and sent them to the Futur by the Gates, piece by piece.
In the road to Mount Lanayru, there are ruins of the same type, I believe it was a Sheikah City.

At about 6:30 you show BotW Zelda. One thing I have noticed is the necklace she is wearing bears a tetraforce. The reason I point this out is because each individual triangle is colored black including the center one. Just wanted to point that out as it clearly shows 4 instead of 3 triangle. Also keep up the solid work

    • @iancomtois9832
      @iancomtois9832 5 ปีที่แล้ว

If all the colors are black, then there's no Golden Power there at all. Which lines up with every line of dialogue from her being about how she can't harness the "sealing power" she was supposed to be born with. In fact, the word "Triforce" is never mentioned anywhere in the game. Why argue for a fourth piece when there might not even be a first?

I remember having a theory about the Tetraforce as well, back in the day. And it tied in pretty well with both the image on the shield and another theory I had about Kaepora Gaebora. I know Hyrule Historia now states that Kaepora Gaebora is the sage Rauru, but at the time all we had to go off of was statements from Gossip Stones and other characters. All the information we had said Kaepora Gaebora was the reincarnation of an Ancient Sage, and that he was very light-hearted. My theory basically stated that he was the previous Sage of Light, but worked as a double agent for the Goddess of the Sand (worshipped by the Gerudo). She tasked him with stealing the 4th Triforce piece, which is why it's shown between his talons on the shield. He was caught in the process though and turned into an owl as punishment. It was believed that he knew he was being followed and hid the Triforce piece somewhere before he was captured, and it's location was never discovered. Kaepora Gaebora was replaced as the Sage of Light, and after centuries of punishment he wanted to redeem himself. He started working with Rauru and Link to thwart the plans of the Gerudo leader, Ganondorf.
The answer to the missing Triforce piece is more than what people thought, though. Where did it actually go, and why would a Goddess seek to steal it? I believed the 4th piece was made by the Goddess of Time (mentioned in Majora's Mask), and when she saw how much it was sought after even by other Goddesses, she split it into two pieces. One half she put in the Master Sword, and the other she put in the Ocarina of Time. It's stated in game that whomever holds both pieces is the master of Time, and can travel its flow like traveling a river. The Goddess of the Sand can't manipulate time, but if she had the Triforce of Time she could rewrite history and make herself the most powerful and beloved Goddess, instead of the ones who created the Triforce/Tetraforce. Now knowing the history of Skyward Sword and the Master Sword, it's possible that the Goddess of Time could have given it to Hylia for safekeeping, and Hylia is the one who split it up and put it into the two relics.
So yeah, that was my theory. Either way, I'm totally in agreement! I feel like there's definitely a 4th Triforce piece, and Nintedo should seriously consider the idea, rathe than just try and debunk the theory.

I've always just assumed the 4th piece represented Hyrule itself. I mean if you look at it you have the triforce thats ontop of the shield, then you have a Loftwing flying up which can resemble the sacred realm where the Triforce is or Skyloft the place that Goddess Hylia sent the hylians after Demise attacked. Then you have the upside down piece that resembles the surface.
Alternatively you could take this same meaning and change the meaning of the upside down piece to resemble Demise as a homage of the battle that occured.

Hey Nintendo Black Crisis, I have a question I was hoping you could answer. So in Ocarina of time, we learn that there is a Gerudo KING born every hundred years. I recently discovered that this is not the case in breath of the wild. We learn from links memories and the champions ballad, that Urbosa was the chief 100 years ago. We can only assume that the next chief was Riju’s mother, who then passed away, leading to riju’s appointment of chief. But in that 100 year gap, no male gerudo was born, and every hundred years when a male gerudo is born, he is automatically appointed king. So my question is (and it will be hard to answer) why was there no gerudo king in that hundred years? Also, would love to do a colab video (I am starting a Nintendo channel, and you discuss the kind of topics I would love to talk about on my channel), although I would rather you answer the question first 😂

Well Plato concept of virtue as stated in Protagoras is composed of 4 elements - Wisdom, Courage, Temperance and Justice. The first 3 are related to the 3 parts of the soul as stated in Republic- logical, spirited and appetitive and the fourth is achieved by having the other 3 in their right places. I believe the power part of the triforce relates to Temperance as the tyrant is a person without temperance that does anything to achieve power. So there is some truth to the tetraforce teory.

You know, (despite this being over a year old) I would like to think the "fourth piece is the manifestation of the Godess Hylia's (aka the full Triforce's) power. Neither of the individual triforces power are gold, but Hylia's power and the physical forms of the triforces are. So in a sense, yes, the fourth one is the balance of all three. We don't see anyone obtain the triforces in BotW, but we do see Zelda having the Goddess' power. There's no "oh hey I have the Wisdom triforce" but just "I have the full power," so there aren't any individual users with the triforce. It's just the Goddess and her Champion.
Plus, look where you get 'The Tunic/Boots/Cap of the Wild.' It's in the Forgotten Temple. Now why would you put endgame gear that's supposedly this game's signature look for the reincarnated hero in the Forgotten Temple? Because it'll be cool? Oh I don't think so. I would like to propose this is the Hylia temple the people worshiped until it was forgotten in favor of the Deity Goddesses (henceforth the Springs).
Why I bring this up? Well, what if the people originally worshiped the Triforce as a whole until they decided (or certain events that caused them) to worship them as three different pieces? The only time we see the triforce power as a whole other than (BotW) is Skyward Sword and Minish Cap. So, Somewhere between the events of Minish Cap and Ocarina of TIme (we don't really count Four Swords rn), either the Triforce was figuratively 'divided' into three pieces, or the people had changed their beliefs to a supposed 'improved' ideology of the Triforce, thus possibly making the Forgotten Temple irrelevant, as it simply worships Hylia rather than Din, Nayru, and Farore.
Now there is the possibility that the kingdom reverted back into the 'Hylia' belief in BotW, but by that time they would have no idea of the Forgotten Temple as we can obviously tell no one even went there. Not even a cutscene or reference in any of the Story. Not even the Champions Ballad either. Is it possible that someone may have discovered it? Maybe, but right now let's assume that it is still unknown to the people.
Now with the Guardians inside the temple, I with stuff pointed out, I would kinda like to assume that the battle 10,000 years ago was, what, maaaaaaaaybe after Skyward Sword and before Minish Cap? Other than that, I really can't explain much about how or why the Guardians are there.
So yeah that's my hour-long thinking of scrambled thoughts a Zelda Crackpot Theory

I'm think that the fourth triangle could represent the balance of the three forces. It could also represent focusing the three into a single force. My reasoning? Each piece was made by each goddess; Courage made by Farore, Wisdom made by Nayru, Power made by Din.
    Hylia made the master sword.
And not just that, in oot, the pedastal you pull the master sword from has a triforce insignia, and the Master Sword is directly in the middle.

How can it be a Tetraforce if they never even confirm that there's a Triforce? Besides, all the marks on that necklace are black, and the Triforce is supposed to be the "Golden Power". When talking about the Triforce, black triangles generally symbolize missing or destroyed pieces. And if she doesn't have any of the original three, we can't say anything about the status of the middle...so she defaults to not having anything there.

The triforce on her belt could just be a design thing. I mean look at the triforce on her attire. The blue triangles are all of the four triangles with an inverted triange outline splitting the triangles apart. Infact most of the triforces encircled with a, well circle has the triangle a single color and an inverted triangle outline splitting the triangle to make it look like the triforce.

When looking at the fourth piece on the oot shield it looks like the bird left it behind
So let's assume it is a loftwing who carried the triforce up to skyloft but didn't have enough power to lift up the fourth piece which maybe is the piece which keeps the fates of the characters (Ganon, Zelda and Link) deeply intertwined until it gets found somehow? Maybe it represents time?
