CROSBY STILLS and NASH - Love the one you're with REACTION

This was from a self titled album from Stephen Stills. The title for the song came from Billy Preston who frequently used this line.
Background vocals from Crosby and Nash provide a great tune. Beautiful use of the steel drums. Many artists have covered this song. Great reaction Harri. Thanks Harri and Cynthia. Amazing memory. Cheers from Canada 🇨🇦
Thank you Mary. x
Yeah the original was the best ...hate the wimpy best of albums
I had the privilege of seeing them in person twice. The second time was front row. I was smashed against the fence at the stage. I was wearing a t-shirt from the first concert. Graham Nash noticed, pointed at me & tossed me his guitar pick! I have it framed with my ticket stub. They are awesome. Their harmony is amazing.
Quite the anthem for many of us back in the day...😉❤️
Still is 😋
Hi Mr. Harri, This song is credited to Mr. Stephen Stills 1970, that is Ste•phen like Ste(ve) not stef•en.. ♠W.G.
Thank you for sharing and your comments! I remember exactly where I was when I heard this song for the first time and who I was sitting next to because I had a crush on him! It was at a church retreat of all places! They showed the movie "Guns of Navarone" followed by this song! Thanks for the walk down memory lane!!!
(can't remember where I read this)
"Those that say, 'Clapton is god.', never saw Stephan Stills play an acoustic guitar"
If Clapton is God, who is Matteo Mancuso?
Thanks for the reaction Harri. I will have to check the other versions as I am not sure if I have heard them or not. ✌I meant to mention this had John Sebastian, Rita Coolidge and Priscilla Jones doing back up singing.
The Isley Brothers do a killer version of this song
@@unclephil7650 I love the Isley Brothers. I saw the one by Luther Vandross and loved it too.
Stephen Stills, by all accounts, is a really nice man and extremely talented. He did well by my cousin, Charlie Chin, when he flew across country to have him add banjo to The Buffalo Springfield song, "Bluebird." Charlie was in Cat Mother, the band that had the one-hit wonder, "Good Ol' Rock and Roll." Funny enough, the best thing that happened to Steve's career was when he failed the audition for The Monkees. (Peter Tork, Stills' former roommate got hired instead). Something about his teeth. LOL. Nice pick, beautiful Cynthia!
@@John_Chu Thanks John. There was another version with just Steven Stills (it said) but it sounded exatcly the same and this one had more views I believe.
@@Cynthia... ✌️🍸
Thanks Cynthia. I did not know till today Priscilla is Rita's sister. Actually, Booker T. & Priscilla were the opening act for Santana in the very first concert I went to in Puerto Rico way back in 1973! (Yes, I'm that old) Keep it up Harry.
Stephen Stills wrote this song. It was a favorite back in my 1st year of high school.
I don’t know if they’re on the record with him, but this is officially a Stephen Stills solo project. Great request Cynthia.
Yes I mentioned elsewhere that there was a version just of Stephen but it sounded exactly the same so C & N must have been in it also no? Not sure.
This is the CS&N version and it came out first. The Stephen Stills solo version has more pronounced guitar fills between each verse line and an obviously female chorus. Similar, but with obvious differences.
@@alanmusicman3385 ok. Thanks 🙏
They are guests it's officially a solo album ...also had Hendrix and Jerry Garcia on this
@Cynthia The album was mainly recorded at Island Studios in London between the two CSNY tours of 1969 and 1970. Stills had bought a mansion in Surrey, England, for £100,000 called Brookfields, which previously belonged to Ringo Starr, and Peter Sellers. This, on the advice of Ahmet Ertegun, head of Atlantic Records, allowed him to get away from Los Angeles and the deteriorating relationships within CSNY.[4] The songs recorded at Island Studios, include "Old Times, Good Times", "To a Flame" and "Go Back Home". After the 1970 CSNY Tour, Stills recorded a few more songs in LA, and most of the backing vocals. Graham Nash recalled in his book Wild Tales: "Stephen called and said, 'You remember that song of mine, "Love the One You’re With," that I cut in London? Well, I’ve brought the track back and we’re in Wally Heider’s with it. I need voices for the choruses. Any chance you and David would come down?'"[5] In addition to Crosby & Nash, the album features an array of well-known guest musicians, including John Sebastian, Cass Elliot and Rita Coolidge who contributed vocals. Ringo Starr drums on two tracks under the pseudonym "Richie,"[6] which he also used for his contribution to the London Sessions album by American bluesman Howlin' Wolf, recorded in England the same year. Stills' album is also the only album to which both Eric Clapton and Jimi Hendrix supplied guitar work.
Great reaction Harri. Another beauty by Cynthia. If Cyn likes it , I love it. 😉🇨🇦🇺🇸🤴🇬🇧🙃
Any combo of Crosby Still Nash or Young will put out material to blow your mind. Four of the most talented musicians on earth and a whole rabbit hole of material.
For f****** real!
HIGH HARRI..... I have seen C.S.N. Live 3 times. Always an incredible experience when these three masters at their craft create such iconic songs and perform them live.....Awesome
Beautiful Cynthia another one that I love
Haven't heard this in too long
Great choice
Love and Music
🎵💜🎶🇨🇦🇺🇲💜🎵
Thanks Miss B. 💜
Such a great song. Hope you're well, Harri!
If I'm not mistaken this was done by Stephen Stills as a solo but had David Crosby singing back up. This really hits home for me since it was very hard for me to have a regular relationship due to my job in EMS and Fire Rescue. It's one of my all-time favorite songs, probably in my top 10.
The title of this song came from when Steve Stills was in England, and he ran into Billy Preston who was at that time recording with either George Harrison, or Ringo, said he was with some girl the night before. When Steve Stills asked him if he wasn't married, he replied, "if you can't be with the one you love, love the one you're with. Stills asked if he could steal that line, and Billy said sure! Thus the song!
Hello, my beautiful Hari from Sue one of your beautuful bestie's 😊
Great analysis Harri! It put to rest much the naughtiness I felt about this song.
Hi, Harri: Good reaction. I had this 45 and the artist was simply Steven Stills. Perhaps the others contributed but it came out under Still's name.
NOT Crosby and Nash - this is from Stills SOLO album.
A legendary band, great music! 👍🎶🎶🎶❤️❤️
Love your honest and intelligent reaction to some of the best music ever played.
Not CSN Stephen Stills solo
YEAHHH THAT LINE HARRI : IF YOU CAN'T BE WITH THE ONE YOU LOVE, LOVE THE ONE YOU'RE WITH 😊JUST OH SO RIGHT! 😊
Would have loved to have been either with SS - either the loved one or the one he just happened to be sitting right next to!
The Mighty Mighty Neville Brothers covered this with Papa Funk and Cyril singing lead and they blew the roof of with it. It's here on TH-cam.....best version ever.
Sparkly little tune by Stills, lol, hope you take a listen to another catchy tune by Steven called 'Johnnies Garden' great tune when you want to open a weary soul. Thanks Harri
With Manassas but better is The Treasure
One of the greats. I've never heard by anyone other than CSN
NOT CSN. It is a Stills song and from his solo album in 1970. They would occasionally play it when they got together, but the recording is his alone. Frustrating.
It was "a bit naughty". That time was all about free sex, drugs, and rock and roll! Lived it. Loved it.
That is such a beautiful take on it, that so many people and I know I've been in that position sometimes, are in relationships that maybe it isn't what they totally want right then, but the thing is you fall in love with each other over time Beyond just that initial bit of infatuation. It's really cool. I would say though, I've always thought of it as a humorous song, like it's kind of a nod nod wink wink pick up line ... You are dancing with someone that you don't know that well at a show or maybe having fun in a honky tonk with a band or a jukebox playing and then you're like, Hey babe, love the one you're with! 😀
As Mary Baillie said, this song was written by Stephen Stills and was a huge hit from his first solo album. She correctly said that the background vocals were Crosby, and Nash. Also singing background on this one were James Taylor, Rita Coolidge, Chris Christopherson, Chris Hillman and Cass Elliot. Stills played all guitars, steel drums, congas, piano and organ. Captain Manyhands.
Nope. Crosby may have been on, but Stills assembled top flight people for this album - Bonnie Bramlett for one, Eric Clapton, Hendrix, Ringo. NOT a CSN effort in the least. He had run away to England to get away from the craziness.
I love CS&N. This is such a great song that has been done by many others as well.
It is NOT C and N; Stills and from his first SOLO album.
I first heard this on my transistor radio as a young teenager, unaware of CSN at the time. It was after midnight in bed. It was a great musical experience, and I just had to seek them out because I needed to hear that song again.
Stephen Stills wrote the song after being inspired by the tag line - "If you can't be with the one you love, love the one you're with" which was a frequent remark by musician Billy Preston.
First of all, Happy Holidays to you and your Subscribers. Like you, your Subs are cooler than the other side of the pillow. On back to back songs from his solo album, the guest guitarists are Hendrix and Clapton with very tasty riffs.
Didn't know there are covers of this song, this is the only version I know. If you want to get
picky about it, it is not a CS&N song. It is from Stephen (pronounced Steven) Stills debut
solo album released in 1970 during the breakup of CS&N. Seems like a lot of his friends
helped him with his first solo effort. Crosby, Nash, John Sebastian, Rita Coolidge and
Priscilla Jones (who is she?, don't know her) provided back up vocals on this song and
Rita also sang on a couple others. Jimi Hendrix and Eric Clapton contributed on two other songs, and Cass Elliot and Booker T Jones helped out too. I believe the album, especially this song, did quite well. I know I went out and bought it right away and still have it.
Yup too many top 40 garbage junkies think this was a Crosby Stills and Nash Best of but you re right Stephen's 1st solo with varied guests including Rita Coolidge who along with Delaney and Bonnie Bramlett sang and played with Eric Clapton and George Harrison....Bonnie after she divorced Delaney sang with Stills and did some gigs with him and Manassa...check out here on TH-cam for their live performance at the Capitol Theater
Priscilla Jones was the sister of Rita Coolidge and married to Booker T Jones.
I bought Stephen Stills’ solo albums back in the day. They were among my favorites. Love me some Stephen Stills.
@@gah9742 Thanks for the info. I didn't know Rita had a sister or that she was married to Booker. I do know Rita was married to Kris Kristofferson. I guess back in the day I was more into just listening to the music than delving into their personal relationships. Now that stuff seems more important. I've always been a fan of instrumentals and one of my favourite instruments is the organ, so I've always loved Booker T and still listen to him quite often.
You missed Ringo in players on the album. The tune We Are Not Helpless....
Thanks Harry. Love the percussion which really comes near the end.
I certainly related to it in the late 70's and early 80's.
Great song, great reaction. I like Southern Cross too
Yuck too wimpy....Their Electric much better Southern Cross was overly commercial garbage just using their names to push out substandard tunes
As you like Crosby, Stills and Nash, perhaps you would like their “Suite : Judy Blue Eyes”, one of the quintessential Hippy songs. Nash was in the UK band the Hollies - masterful ! One Love from the UK
Stephen Stills is an incredible artist. Other songs to check out from his solo albums include Church (Part of Someone), We Are Not Helpless, Change Partners, Sugar Babe, and his work with his band Manassas: So Begins the Task, Johnny's Garden and the awesome The Treasure (Take One). And you're right, this song was covered by many other great artists!
Do For Others too.
@@jeffreythaw3333 Yes definitely!
Unbelieveable talent greatness
Thanks Harri..I just think the original is always first, not saying it was not done again..I am sure all the other artist's did it proud..Enjoy. the first..
Free love in the 70s it wasn't naughty and that is probably what you were thinking
Love the one your with kinda descibes the 60s
So here we are Harri, growing up with the idea that “Summer Breeze” and “Love The One You’re With” are Isley Brothers originals. And now discovering they weren’t. 😅
remember how great this song is
Love how much you enjoyed this!
People jive talking about Elvis stealing black man's music... It's not just 1 person everybody does it Case in point. Like BB king said if it's out there people can do anything they want with it
Stills grew up pure Southern and Louisiana, rural northern Florida so he's entitled. Better than all that English nonsense about the Stones being the 'true' voice of American blues. Bah.
The way they do the aah aah aah sounds exactly like burning love from Elvis. He must've been inspired by this.
What an interesting observation!
Absolutely not.....Original version beats Presley...no comparison
@@DENVEROUTDOORMAN I was just thinking Elvis may have taken it from this song
This isn't CS&N, it's just Stephen Stills from his solo album "Stephen Stills" Great song
HIGH HARRI...... All us subscribers want to see you react to Bob Dylan - "It's Alright Ma, I'm Only Bleeding" done live.... It will change your entire perspectives on life.
Cornelious Bros & Sister Rose covered this song as well.
CSN, specifically Stephen Stills, wrote this song. As CSNY they wrote over 800 songs. Enjoy, Harri!
C and N had NOTHING TO DO WITH THIS SONG. It is from his solo album.
This is a foundational song of the 60s/70s, laying down one of the basic tenets of hippie culture. I'm sure there are a few feminists who don't appreciate this song, but free love was a yhing back then.
Dang this sounds great. It sounds impossibly deep. Is it remastered?
another banger by CSN!! seems like you were blown away by the original again 🙂 love your reaction to this. Keep it coming 👍
NOT A BANGER.....that would be reserved for their Live Album 4 way street which no one does but Carry on with the solos by Neil Young and Stills are fantastic as is Southern Man
NOT CSN. Get it right.
Not naughty, but very much about the free love atmosphere of the mid to late 60's. The birth control pill came to the US in 1963. The beatniks (who were 'hip')were replaced by the hippies and it both enabled and abused female sexuality
395/2.1K 10 hours ago 98.4K
Good song thanks
would you try a song by Eric Burdon When i was Young
Back in the hippie days this lyric went down well, but in this day and age it doesn’t fly. Dated and silly. Today it’s “do a background check first”.
Yes young people, your (great)grandparents were cooler than you thought.
Their harmonies are perfect! Try these:
"Might as Well Have a Good Time", "4+20", "Daylight Again", "Wasted on the Way", and "Find the Cost of Freedom"
Nope wasted on the way was too wimpy just not too good sitting on their laurels as was Daylight again a garbage album just cause they needed money....4 way street way better and was they at their best not just wimpy acoustic as well as when Stills fronted Manassas
Don't be angry or sad.......cuz I think CS&N meant what you think it means. Yes, naughty.
NOT CSN.
They thought it was a lot less funny when they became parents!
timbales?
/
Not CSN. SS solo album.
My favorite of theirs is " Southern Cross"
Oh, friend, this was all about the free love ethos among the "youth" culture of the time (most were adults, in fact). All "naughtiness" implied -- or stated outright. Nothing deep here. This song hit when I was in high school, about 15 years old. It was quite a time.
just a song before i go, CHECK IT OUT, CSN
The Latin rhythms are the clue that this is a Stephen Stills song, not to mention his voice on the lead. I prefer the solo version by Stills.
This is the Solo album version...just the repackaged version for the top 40 wimps
This IS the original from Stills.
That naughty thing you're thinking of is probably correct. It's a beautiful piece of music, performed excellently, but the theme and the lyrics are questionable.
EDIT- i keep coming around to see you react to stuff I know, and to comment. Time to subscribe.I did.
PEACE-LOVE-HARMONY!!! Darn hippies anyway. Thanks, Harri.
No they were never hippies
It's from the first Stephen Stills solo lp, not CSN even though they sang on it.
Do your homework in advance! This is a Stephen Still's song that apears on his 1970 solo album "Stephen Stills".
Yea, great song from around the summer of '71. This song was on Stephen's 1st solo LP/CD. The cover of this particular LP/CD has Stephen
sitting on a snow covered bench with his guitar and a large stuffed red giraffe beside him. There are a number of very good songs on this record.
Look for: 1) Sit Yourself Down 2) Do For The Others 3) To A Flame. On Stephen's second solo LP/CD the song to look for is 'Change Partners.'
But better was his songs by Manassas
There is a great version on CSN&Y ' s live album Four Way Street .I think the original was on Steve Still's first solo album from 1970 .
No the Electric Stuff off 4 way street was better with Stills and Young trading leads but since it's not top 40 garbage requesters never ask for it which is tragic....Although there is an acoustic piano version of For What It's Worth that needs to be heard
I like the electric album of 4WS as much as anyone but the acoustic album is nice .
I dont know if you have reacted yo this. LP Lost on You. You will love it and the lyrics.
Thanks a lot! This is one of their most emblematic tracks. The Supremes did a great rendition of it in 1971. th-cam.com/video/-ZEkkiBPECU/w-d-xo.html
No they didn't they butchered it
Harri, fine reaction as always, for a purer rendition of this check out the C,S,N &Y album 4 WAY STREET for a live acoustic version sung the way it was composed.
Nope need the Electric performances (not the wimpy acoustic) of Carry On or Southern Man or Almost Cut My Hair.....Electric was their best
No Crosby, no Nash here.
Except on background vocals.
As you said, Hari a lot of people covered this - but this CS&N version was the original first released. Soon after, Stephen Stills had a top 20 hit single with his solo version, which is different in that it has guitar fills between each line of the verses and obviously female backing vocals (Rita Coolidge was one of those singers) on the choruses. Both versions have the organ break in the C section and both have the definite ending (not a fade). Stephen's version (and the album it came from) seems to have been recorded in the UK - and various sources say that Ringo Starr played drums on this.
This is great, but I like Stephen's solo version a bit better - there are a lot of good versions (Luther Van Dross' version stands out) but best of all I like the Isley Brothers version - which really goes for it. But, I have never heard a bad version of this song, which is a tribute to Stephen Stills writing of the song I think.
Nope wasn't a solo albums with guests not a Crosby Stills and Nash Album but Crosby and Nash did guest spots on the Album....so not a best of version and was a solo album....even better was Stills and Manassas
@@DENVEROUTDOORMAN Erm... not quite with you. Do you mean it WAS a solo album with guests?
Unfortunately I cannot pull the name of the artist or band off the top of my head, but I'm pretty sure somebody had a country music hit with this as well. Not the Bellamy brothers but that's what pops into my mind. I guess this song really made the rounds. Talk about crossover!
Nope they didnt
Good song. Bob Seger did it Best.
another classic from CSN
No from Stephen Stills SOLO ALBUM not a CSN album
What ho, Harri. I prefer the Isley's version. The production on Stills' version is muddy, the Isley's is much simpler and cleaner. Also, I've been a fan of Ronald Isley's voice since "Shout".
Having said that I have both versions in my collection. 😃
Ahh yeah, the free love hippie days, do what you want. Turned out to to be a double edged sword
Nope they were nt hippies
THIS ERA? 'TEACH YOUR CHILDREN WELL'
But not as wimpy...not top 40 normal material
I disapprove of the sentiment of this song, even though it is a wonderful tune.
Nope great sentiment love em and leave em
I think the sentiment is open to interpretation . I'd like to believe it means don't waste your life pining
away over a lost love but give all your love to the person you are close to now.
@@SnowmanN49 It's the "one night stand" that I disapprove of.
@@wilfbentley6738 Roger that.
I'm listening and can't stop asking myself....What happened to music today?
I won't say it's crap but it ain't great like it used to be.
No its crap same beat same bass over modulated fake voices help by electronics same sounds
Try "Teach Your Children" by CSN&Y.
Nope try Southern Man off Four Way Street Live something with balls or same album but live Rock version of Carry On
